In the past 2 weeks, we’ve had 2 heartbreaking losses in our community due to knife crime and dangerous driving. Just last week, we buried our brother Hamza, and now we've lost another brother in a car accident. If this isn’t a wake up call to the people of Darnall, then I don’t know what it will take for us to change as a community.

Are we really going to wait until one of our own family members dies before we take action? We see people recklessly driving up and down Staniforth Road, putting themselves and others at risk. Kids as young as 11 are carrying knives, and these aren’t just random kids, they are our brothers, cousins, sons, and nephews. We are responsible for looking out for them.

The Prophet ‎ﷺ said: “All of you are shepherds and each of you is responsible for his flock”.

The elders in our community need to step up and get more involved in the lives of our youth. Too many fathers don’t know or care about what their sons are up to. It’s time for all elders to put their differences aside, come together, and discuss what can be done to tackle these issues. We need to work together and not be divisive, or this will continue, and Allah forbid, one day it might be your child.

Don’t let the death of these two youngsters be in vain. If the first death wasn't enough of a reminder of how short life is, then this should be. Start praying, attend the masjid, and be good to people, live how you’d like to be remembered after you die. Just like they didn’t know their deaths would be written for them so early, so too will you one day die and not expect it. Our next breath is not promised, we could go to sleep tonight and not wake up the next day. May this be a lesson for us all, myself including.

May Allah grant both Hamza and Reyaan Jannatul Firdaws and make their graves a garden from the gardens of paradise. May Allah protect our young and our old, and may He keep us firm upon Al-Islam and live a life which is pleasing to Him.
