Despite recent challenges, including an unexpected eviction notice, our resolve remains strong. Last weekβs discussions about purchasing The Abbeydale Picture House were positive so we were surprised and shocked to find the locks changed and an eviction notice posted without warning this week. We have taken immediate steps to challenge this action and launched a legal dispute.
We are encouraged, however, by the recent good news that the charity has been awarded funding from the Community Ownership Fund and even more recently, official recognition of the Abbeydale Picture House as an Asset of Community Value affirms our belief in the importance of this building for the community.
We remain optimistic about the future and are committed to reviving the Abbeydale Picture House. We believe a resolution is possible and are working tirelessly to reopen the building to the public. We want to extend our thanks to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities (DLUC) and Sheffield City Council for their support through this complex process.
Our journey continues, and we are confident that with persistence, our project will come to fruition. Thank you for standing with us.
We're thrilled to share that CADS has secured a Β£300,000 grant from the UK Governmentβs Community Ownership Fund to help save The Abbeydale Picture House, a cherished historical landmark in our city. This grant, provided by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, is vital step towards the restoration and reinvigoration of this iconic heritage building. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Theatres Trust, Music Venue Trust , and National Trust for their ongoing support.

Today we can announce that The Abbeydale Picture House has been added to Theatres Trust's Theatres at Risk Register. This register aims to spotlight and support theatre buildings across the UK facing significant threats. The Abbeydale Picture House, like others on the list, is now recognised for its vulnerability. We appreciate your ongoing support as we navigate this situation and work towards preserving the venue. We would like to thank Theatres Trust, who have given us lots of support and expert advice since we took on the lease for the building in 2017.
In addition, we're excited to share that our Head of Operations, Dan Butlin, will be appearing on Channel 5 news today at 5pm. Tune in to gain further insights into our efforts and the significance of this recognition for the future of the venue.

Algorithmic patterns can be found in a diverse range of heritage and contemporary practices, prevalent in the performing arts and crafts. They are marked by having structural systems based on simple rules that when combined can produce works of astonishing complexity. Examples include drafts in shaft weaving, site swaps in juggling and teermana in Carnatic music, along with computer-based examples such as bytebeat and bitfields in the demo scene, and pattern-based live coding environments in electronic music performance.

Our Story
In 2009, CADS founder Steve Rimmer took on three studio spaces in Kelham Island in order to house equipment for his music promotions company. He soon realised that the spaces he had were slightly too big for him so he sought out other artists to take on two of the studios. Before long more people started to contact Steve enquiring about studio spaces; so much so that he decided to set up a studio complex in Shalesmoor, and so CADS was born!
Over the next few years CADS grew from taking on their first entire building (CADS Works) with 10 studios to providing over 86 studios across 6 buildings around Sheffield. As well as this, the main space on Smithfield became synonymous with Sheffieldβs underground party scene with The Night Kitchen event space and its predecessor Dirty Little Secret earning acclaim both within the city and even in the national press, bringing some of the best artists from the UK and around the world to what was previously a quiet corner of Sheffield.
In 2013 CADS gained charitable status with its mission to provide affordable space to people regardless of their social or economic circumstances, however established they may be in their chosen field.
The activities of the charity have developed beyond the provision of affordable space to include programmes of support for various groups facing disadvantage. One such programme "Space Cadets" gives use of a studio free of charge for 6 weeks at a time to artists of limited financial means to pursue an idea or project.
