Last night was the final instalment of our sports screening at Sheffield Hockey Club down at Abbeydale Sports Club
Some of our Physio team Rob,Kane, Adam and Laura were there to complete screening with the team using some of our fab kit , speed gates and optojump to help optimise the health of the athletes and help p develop injury prevention strategies for the athletes.
It was great to meet the players and coaches and see some very quick times :)
We can’t wait to present the data back to the team to help with their strategies for this season and next
If your club is interested in sports screening for your players - please pop us a DM as our pre season schedule is already starting to fill up!
Healing isn’t linear
What do we mean by that?
Well , in any pain or injury recovery , there will be ups and downs , peaks and troughs , periods of good quick progress and periods where things slow down
As physios it’s our job to coach our patients through this process, knowing when to accelerate your rehab , and when we need to take things back to basics
You can have 2 people with the exact same issue , but their rehab might not look ok the same .
If your injury hasn’t got better by resting , consider asking for advice and getting more of an idea what’s going on and what’s best to do to get back to life/ sport quickly

As we come to the end of stress awareness week here are some quick , and longer term tips for stress management !
What are your top tips when you feel stressed ?
Did you know that cyclical breathing has a lot of evidence behind it in terms of lowering your stress levels .
Here’s a quick guide

Meet the Team
Gareth Stephenson - Specialist MSK Physiotherapist
Hi, my name is Gareth I live in Barnsley. I love being a physio. I have been a physio for the last 5 years and I love to see a variety of clients / patients from early-stage sports rehab to arthritic knees to chronic back pain issues. The most important aspect for me is getting to know people well and having engaging conversations with people about their current limitations. When I am not working, you’ll most likely to find me in the Cross Fit gym or at home with a cup of tea, spending time with family and playing classical guitar.
A brain tumour is a devastating diagnosis for a patient and their loved ones . This international brain tumour awareness week we would like to highlight Adrian’s story- and the amazing things he is doing with
www.wecankickit.org
Adrian Conoboy MBE is the Founder and Director of We Can Kick It, a charity that harnesses the power of football (or soccer for many of our international readers) to help children cope with cancer.
In 2016, Adrian was living in New York and loving every minute of his job as a football coach. But after a sudden seizure, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. There had been no warning signs and Adrian’s life changed radically overnight.
After brain surgery, he embarked on a treatment programme of chemotherapy and radiation. A grueling 18 months of speech, occupational and physical therapy followed his treatment.
While Adrian was undergoing treatment, he had the inspiration to use the healing power of football to help other families. He set up set up We Can Kick It in 2018 to offer free soccer clinics for children with cancer.
“One of the hardest parts of cancer is learning to navigate the new normal. Life doesn’t snap back when your hair grows back or you ring that bell. You might have weakness on one side, not have grown as tall as your peers, feel conscious of your scars, and fell behind because of hospital appointments.
“When the kids are on the field they have the chance to forget some of their worries and just be a kid. Seeing the joy and confidence our clinics give the children is amazing. They are just kids having fun, playing a game that they love, in a supportive and encouraging environment.”
Sending love to all the brain 🧠 tumour warriors I know ( and 2 amazing ones in particular who know who they are )
Pleased to be back in this lovely space at our Bromhill clinic for an afternoon of pelvic health patients
Our November diary is now open and can be booked via the website
www.purephysiotherapy.co.uk
Our pelvic health clinic is available at our Sheffield- Broomhall
And Doncaster locations
So if you are struggling with
-pelvic floor issues
-Urinary incontinence
-prolapse
-menopause related symptoms
Or have just had a baby and need to know where to start with your post natal rehab - give our pelvic health team a call - we can help
Strength training , it is beneficial at many different phases of life , but it isn’t something we are taught how to do .
And so, many people shy away from it
Where to start ?
Well firstly if you are afraid to lift weights 🏋️♂️ because you are worried you will injure yourself with poor technique….
Do you think about your technique when you do the weekly supermarket shop and lift all the bags in in 1 go whilst running because it’s raining?
Or pick up your 25kg kid- surfboard style ,10kg baby and the changing bag , scooter and push the pram or trolley swiftly out of a shop because you want to avoid toddler meltdown?
Or lift the dog into the boot of the car
No , you don’t
And I could go on
My point is this
- you are already strength training with the worst technique ever , every day
- you lift weights more times in every day life
So next time you head towards that exercise bike or out of the door for some cardio and bypass those scary dumbells or kettle bells - stop , think for a moment and have a go.
And remember the benefits for bone health , brain health , heart health and also independence as we age.
Gyms have great gym floor staff who can point you in the right direction , most memberships offer at least 1 introductory PT session
Or - your physio can help design a programme that fits around your pain or injury
It’s black history month and this years theme is
If you have not heard of some of the women on this amazing picture below
www.black history month.org
Has some great resources
Make it your business to know these women, what they stand for , have achieved , have endured and what women around you are still ensuring daily.
But please drive carefully and stay safe
Happy Friday everyone 💙🧡💜
No no no 1000x no!
We hear this so many times from our patients ( of all ages ) in clinic
And here’s the thing - no , no it isn’t
If your pain/ injury was just down to your age , everyone of that age would have the same problem
There are so many factors other than age that can contribute to injury and pain
And there is so much that can be worked on with your Physiotherapist to address these issues .
Don’t write yourself off just yet please
( I even had this conversation with a 25 year old the other day 🫣)
Don’t accept pain - there’s loads you can do - speak to a pain expert
(That’s us btw! )
Happy Wednesday
Happy Friday all
Here’s Lauren and I explaining
How we assess a pelvic health problem
Hope it’s useful
Any questions just comment or
Message :)
Having a gait analysis done can be an excellent way to reduce your daily pain, whether or not you’re a runner. It will pick up on issues with your stride, unusual head or arm position, and any other issues hiding in your walking or running patterns.
And if you are a runner, this analysis can help you find the right rehab programme , tweaks to your gait to optimise performance and running routine to keep your body in peak condition and make all your runs easier, increase speed, distance , endurance , or whatever else your goals are.
Elite athletes pay detailed attention to the detail of their running gait . The strengthening and promotion of a natural elastic recoil in your lower limb is what part of what helps elite athletes to perform at elite levels. And, you should pay just as much attention to your gait analysis, whether you’re an elite athlete or not.
At Pure we use optojump technology to break down and analyse many aspects of your running gait to help our specialist physio team help take you from pain to performance
Whether you are just starting out on your running journey or wanting to make some training tweaks for your next marathon/ ultra / tri you can book in here

What “facts” have you heard about back pain?
At pure we love to bust a good myth and help our patients to understand their pain so they can recover without feeling worried that they are doing the wrong thing / making things worse .
Education is key !
So go on post your favourite back pain myths and old wives tales below and we’ll bust them for you!
Lx
Menopause :
What image does it conjure up for you?
For most people we think of hot flushes and women of a certain age right?
Wrong .
This menopause awareness month we will be busting some common myths and misconceptions surrounding the menopause
Todays UK population is 50.6% female - so, this will affect or is already affecting that percentage of the population.
So let’s talk about it .
Perimenopause is on average 4 years long ( but I could last longer) before your periods stop but where you begin to have symptoms .
Average age for this in the uk is 40-44 based on current research , but it is estimated that 1 in 100 women have symptoms in their 30’s and , as we begin to get better in healthcare at listening to women , it is expected that better understanding and an earlier diagnosis will bring this average age down.
Menopause is officially diagnosed 1 year after your periods stop (due to no other medical cause)
And post menopausal is the rest of life beyond this point
Have you found this useful - if so please comment and share - it’s good to shout about it!
What has been your experience so far : join the conversation and share your journey to help others below

Do you suffer with migraines ?
This migraine awareness week here is some interesting info for migraine sufferers
1 in 5 people in the UK do at sometime in their lives
Access to specialist migraine services varies widely depending upon where you are in the UK
5.7 days are lost per person with migraine every year, equating to 43 million workdays at a cost of almost £4.4bn in the UK
There are many different types of migraine , from hemiplegic ( mimicking some symptoms of a stroke) to hormonal/ menstrual , retinal, abdominal and lots more
Each person will experience migraine differently
Triggers ( or things that contribute to a migraine happening) vary wildly and are often a combination of factors : hormones , dehydration, diet, stress, sleep, alcohol, caffeine, exercise , medication are just some of these
Below are the stages of migraine
Physiotherapy including acupuncture is recommended by NICE ( the body the NHS use for evidence based treatment recommendations) for certain types of headache/ migraine
We have clinicians with Headache / migraine specialist skills in our yorkshire clinics
Keeping a migraine / headache diary is also reccomended - see www.migrainetrust.org for a great template
Carol Welch said it best
Movement is a medicine for creating change in someone’s physical, emotional and mental states
And we all know it and we’ve heard it before
When you are in pain , or stiff , or weak, or injured , or tired , or busy - movement isn’t always that easy
But- movement doesn’t always have to mean what you think it does , it doesn’t always have to be difficult or time consuming - it doesn’t always have to be 10,000 steps or a yoga class or a run or the gym
Movement can be anything you want to to be- stick on your fave tune while you Hoover the house Freddie Mercury Style , Get off the bus 1 stop early , park your car further from the supermarket
But whatever it is move more
Because pain, stiffness and immobility are not fun
Struggling to move - physiotherapists can help design a programme that fits with you , your likes , your life and help you to move and feel better !
What’s your favourite way to move ?
Here are some of our lovely yorkshire team today attending our quarterly CPD day

Also fun fact Friday:
The largest treadmill in the world, unveiled on 16 September 2004, was built on Discovery Channel's BIG! television show and measures 29 ft 10 in (9.08 m) long, 12 ft 4.5 in (3.66 m) wide and 20 ft 11 in (6.36 m) tall. The treadmill was unveiled at Venice Beach, California. The running track is 11 ft 1/4 in wide and 24 ft 11 1/2 in long. Over a dozen people can run on the treadmill simultaneously. It's top speed is 20 mph and it raises approximately 20 degrees from the horizontal. On the day of testing, it was successfully used by a peloton of cyclists, a marching band and a car.
Happy Friday all! 💙🧡💜
