See you at 8.30!
Well then. Some very upsetting news this week, The University of Sheffield is deliberating the future of the archeology department once again. This time it seems far more dire then ever before. I would like to take some time to reflect on this, we are after all, the unofficial departmental office/classroom/social space/employer.
In my time here (over 10 years) I have met some of the most interesting, intelligent and excellent people in the world, a great many are Sheffield uni archaeologists (The best one being my wife of course!). To think a department which was ranked 3rd in the country when I started here, and has been home to many of the worlds best is now on the brink, is unfathomable. I understand the government position regarding budgets and the arts, I understand the desire for 'bums on seats' business models, and I understand the common belief that history is just that. But no other discipline can tell us who we were, why we did something and what we used to do it.
I can't comprehend how a department which has had such a cultural impact on Sheffield (e.g Sheffield Castle excavations) and the UK as a whole (read: archaeology company spin-outs, world renowned experts, international collaborations), is under threat.
We have always been intertwined with archaeology at Sheffield, hosting regular Archaeology in the City events, participating in events (Woodland Heritage Festival), organising private smelts, and hosting classes and workshops (when there was no available spaces within the university!).
Our thoughts are with the team at Archaeology at the University of Sheffield. If you want to get involved, and support the departments future and the jobs/livelihoods of those who work there, please follow this link: https://sites.google.com/view/save-sheffield-archaeology/home
Lots of love to you all in these bleak times
Jake and the team
Home What is going on with archaeology at the University of Sheffield? Good question! In 2020 three new full-time posts were approved for the department of archaeology at Sheffield, but then scrapped due to the pandemic. When the department asked if these could be reinstated for the upcoming academic

So... I've been a bit quiet. That's because there's a lot going on, but I can confirm we are opening from the 17th. We are taking reservations between 17th May and 8th June. This is because my tenancy ends near the 8th, and I'm not sure what's happening with the Deer going forward. Hours and food will be limited during this period for obvious reasons.
Hours:
Mon-Fri 5pm-Midnight
Sat/Sun Midday-Midnight
Food:
Menu will be variable and mainly focused on a small selection of smaller plates. I'm sorry that we wont be going to our normal menu range and options, however, needs must in these strange times!
Reservations can be made here:
www.reddeersheffield.com/bookings
When I know more about the future of the site, I will of course share this with you!
BRING ON THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS!
Really looking forward to seeing you,
Jake
