Horizon Health
Nurse Led Lifestyle Prescribing Clinics in Skipton.
Thank you to Dr Verner Wheelock for inviting me to speak about lifestyle medicine at the monthly Skipton Low Carb Society. Had a wonderful evening and met some fascinating and interesting people.
What a fantastic day. Really enjoyed supporting the gut health promotion with Halsa Wellbeing. It is so encouraging to find so many people interested in finding out about the benefits of good gut health.
Last week we attended the Health and Wellbeing Day at RWE Swindon. The event was set out in their fantastic communal space, and there were lots of health and wellbeing offerings for staff to engage with.
This year we focused on Gut Health – with lots of information about how to eat well to support your Gut Microbiome. We were so impressed that the Catering team had put out gut friendly foods and snacks for people to try!
The Occupational Health Team were there offering health testing, guidance and support and they also had the Tanita machine there for staff to use.
A great day with lots of engagement and we are proud to be linked with this organisation who put so much focus on staff wellbeing and the link to health and safety.
I can only second what the BSLM have said. A true loss to medicine and the progressive movement towards health and wellbeing.
The BSLM is deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of Dr Michael Mosley. Many members of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine have been inspired by his and Clare’s work over the years.
Michael’s compassionate, enquiring and trusted voice gave patients confidence to bring up options beyond just pills with their clinicians and clinicians the permission to talk and learn about these issues, in particular around metabolic health.
Before his books and documentaries on health and lifestyle, the concept of Type-2 diabetes remission or “lifestyle psychiatry” were relatively unheard of but have now become mainstream, well-evidenced treatment options. He and Clare have been trail blazers for organisation such as the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine; following their work we’ve forged a new medical discipline to scale up this approach in medicine.
The BSLM will continue the progress around offering people options beyond pills; voices like his are desperately needed in a health system dominated by genomics, pharmaceuticals and technical solutions. As he would say, the real solutions to our health problems more often start with “just one thing”. He will be greatly missed by the lifestyle medicine community and those individuals whose health has been transformed by his work

Past trauma large and small impacts your health.
I attended a Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine event hosted by Dr Rangan Chatterjee and Dr Ayan Panja, with guest speaker Dr Gabor Maté, on Saturday, held at County Hall in London.
Dr Gabor Maté is one of, if not, the world's leading expert on the impact of trauma on the body, and how trauma, big and small, can and does cause long term medical problems.
His latest book 'The Myth of Normal' is incredible, as is he. It shows how recognising and dealing with trauma can improve your health and wellbeing.
I was blown away by all the presenters, especially Dr Gabor Maté, who at 80 years old stood and talked for 5 hours, then signed books for everyone who asked (which was practically all of the 400 doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists present).

The power of the mind over the body.
Do you know the hunger hormone? It is called Ghrelin. It is a hormone that increases appetite and hence the need to get calories into the body.
A study was done on Ghrelin levels in the blood on two groups of willing subjects.
Group 1 were give 140cal milkshake. Group 2 were given a 620cal shake.
Group 2 showed a three time reduction in Ghrelin, compared to group 1. They were no longer hungry. As you might expect.
Here's the interesting bit;
In reality both groups were give 380cal shakes.
So what do you think this shows?
You have the power over your mind, not outside events. Realise this, and you will find strength. Marcus Aurelius AD161
First day of conference at the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine in Manchester. Guest speaker Dr Rangan Chattergee, was insightful. Over 1000 Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists learning more about the benefits of Lifestyle Prescribing. Had the pleasure to meet one of the guest speakers and one of the authors of the published medical studies. Amazing 1st day.
