13 14 August, Art in the Pen Skipton
This weekend I am exhibiting at Art in the Pen, the auction mart, Skipton, It has been a great day today, there are a lot of great artists and craftspeople also exhibiting. I have enjoyed talking about my furniture with a lot of the visitors and it was very special talking to people that I have made furniture for in the last few years. I also took my small workbench and discussed and demonstrated the technique I use to cut the dovetail joints used in my boxes and drawers
I've had a realy great day at Saltaire Arts Trail, there is a lot of good art and craft work to be seen and chance to talk to the artists who created them. For more details visit www. saltaireinspired.org.uk or www.facebook.com/saltaired inspired
I had a great time talking to the visitors discussing the design inspiration for some of my pieces and how I made them.
Thank you to all of you who made very nice comments about my work.

Come along and say hello
I have been making a pair of carver dining chairs to go with the eight dining chairs that I made earier this year. My client requested that the carver chairs would compliment the side chairs and have something that would give them their own individuality. It was agreed that the back panels would be made from English Brown Oak. I am pleased with the contrst they make with the side chairs which have Rippled Ash back panels.
The dining chairs have now been completed and it was a great feeling to be able to deliver them and see them in the room I had designed them for. I was pleased with how well they complimented the dining table. The Rippled Oak table top and the Rippled Oak used in the crest (top) rails and part of the back panels gave unity to the dining furniture whilst the Rippled Ash that I used for the back panels gave each chair an individual identity.
I am grateful for my clients who sent me these photos and these kind words-
'I must say these chairs are fantastically comfortable and just at the right height when eating so we couldn’t be happier with them.
'I think that the chairs are absolutely stunning! I am so happy with them - and they complement the table perfectly. Thank you very much.'
This week I have completed the first and second stages of gluing up the set of eight dining chairs that I am making. All that remains to be added to the chairs are the back panel assemblies. It was great to get to this stage after weeks of planing, shaping, sanding and cutting joints. The chair design has now become a physical object that I can look at from various angles and test out by sitting on it. I am pleased that the chair is comfortable and resembles the design /mental picture I had when I developed the design.
During the last few weeks I have been making a set of eight dining chairs to compliment a table made in Rippled Oak with Ash framework. The chairs are made in English Oak with Rippled Oak crest rail and a Rippled Ash back panel. I have hollowed out the seat shapes using a wooden travisher and a round soled spokeshave and will be leaving the tool marks left by these tools so that it is possible to see how the seat was shaped by the hand tools. This is a process I really enjoy and is quite therapeutic after the precise work required when cutting the small dovetail joints on my jewellery boxes.

This week I have applied for Saltaire Arts Trail 2016 maker's fair. I exhibited my furniture at this event for a few years and I have always enjoyed talking to the people who visit the maker's fair and the open houses. The Arts trail is very interesting and many artists and craftsmen exhibit their work in the open houses and have stalls in the Maker's fair.
Last year I made a coffee table as my 'show stopper' piece, the design was inspired by a group of beech trees I saw growing on a mound on the Earthworks at Avebury stone circle, Wiltshire
We have now finished and delivered the Ash table for the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate. The table top and sides are 'D'-section in shape, we are pleased with the subtle curves produced in the table design. It is finished with a semi matt lacquer giving a water resistant hard wearing surface.
The Mercer Art Gallery grand re-opening was on friday the 16th and is currently holding an exhibition of the work of Atkinson Grimshaw.
We have been working on a commission for the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate. This is one of the pieces of furniture we were commissioned to design and make. We have made four pairs of chairs of different designs, two pairs of benches, a coffee table and a large bespoke table. We used Oak, Ash, Brown Oak and Elm to make the furniture and are very pleased with the final pieces.
The Mercer Art Gallery reopens on the 16th April.
