🔥 Boiler servicing and why is it a good idea…?

❓This is a common question gas engineers are asked by customers. This week one of my customers contacted me about their boiler as it was not working. This is a fairly new boiler (4 years old) and it was a top of the range boiler, one which comes with a 10 year guarantee*

I ran a few checks on the boiler to establish what I believed to be the issue and then contacted the manufacturer to ask if they were covered under the guarantee and fortunately they were. Almost every manufacturer will ask if the customer has the boiler serviced annually, which in this case they had so the manufacturer sent out an engineer the next day and got a number of the parts replaced and most importantly got the boiler back on and working. This meant the customer didn't need to pay out for any of this!

Other reason why you should get your boiler serviced annually:

✅ Adjustments can be made to ensure it's working correctly and efficiently
✅ Visual inspection of the internal components can be checked and replaced if damaged or showing signs of wear and tear
✅ Ensuring the boiler is not producing high levels of carbon monoxide
✅ Checking they the safety devices are working correctly
✅ Checking the water quality of the central heating water and adding chemicals if needed to help control rusting
✅ *Ensuring you maintain a valid warranty / guarantee with the manufacturer

💧 Fixing an emergency stop tap

⚠️ This week Protea Plumbing came to the rescue for this commercial company and replaced their leaking stop tap.

🔧 Access was tight, so a section of pipe was removed. A new stop tap and drain down point installed. Now they are able to safely isolate the incoming water supply 🤙

🔥 Boiler issues during winter ❄️

🔧 Last week a new customer got in touch with me regarding a boiler issue.

Their boiler was 4 years old and when installed came with a 10 year manufacturer warranty.

⚠️ Unfortunately, the boiler had not been serviced each year, meaning the warranty was invalidated.

💷 The repair ended up costing the customer £200, this would have been covered by manufacturer warranty if they had kept the boiler serviced each year.

📅 I always recommend customers have their boilers serviced each year, this ensures they are maintaining their warranty and helps ensure the boiler is running smoothly and efficiently.

Often boilers need to be cleaned and adjusted to ensure they run as smoothly as possible. Early intervention can avoid your boiler breaking down when you need it most.

🔥 Boiler Service 🔥

During this Intergas boiler service, the boiler was stripped down, cleaned and a new set of seals were replaced. The gas valve was adjusted to ensure the combustion performance was correct. All this results in more efficiency and the boiler running optimally 👌

📈 Levelling up...

Last week I attended the Worcester Bosch technical academy to acquire my qualification in water systems (G3). This qualification allows me to install and maintain / service unvented hot water cylinders.

The course was really interesting and I got to meet some plumbing and heating engineers from different parts of the country.

✅ Putting things right!

Recently I was asked to help a new customer who's had some bad plumbing work carried out at their house.

The photo on the left shows the pipework leading into the radiator valves, as you can see it's coming up at a strange angle.

I disconnected it, had the floor up to make sure all the copper pipework lines up nice and straight (plumb).

The end result - traditional cast iron radiators look really good, as the customer wanted in the first place 😍

🔥 Boiler heat exchanger cleaned ✅

⚠️ This customer's boiler was playing up and locking out. I fully stripped the heat exchanger and replaced the electrodes which will help keep this boiler going for a few more years, rather than replacing the whole boiler.

⏰ Regular servicing is always recommended, on top of this boiler manufacturers recommend that certain parts are also replaced periodically, such as electrodes, even though the old ones look okay.

Beauty and the beast...

Well not quite 😁 this customer asked me to re-plumbed their under sink after having a new kitchen fitted. They had:

💧 A water softener
🚰 A filtered water tap
🥦 food waste disposal
And various other connections for a dishwasher and garden tap.

🤩 What a difference it looks like, after the layout was neatened up!

The customer now has moved usable room under the sink and any future work / maintenance much easier to get to.

New replacement kitchen tap.

This customer wanted to replace their existing kitchen tap, which had started to leak. The right one is a lovely traditional style tap which I installed. A lovely upgrade for their kitchen.

Can you move a radiator...?

This radiator was moved from behind the door, to in front of the door. Only a few floorboards needed to be lifted to get the pipework in place. All done in copper pipework.

🚽 Do you have a wobbly toilet?

Problem - Customer told me that their toilet was wobbly and wasn't flushing correctly.

💧I safely disconnected the toilet from the supply and lifted it out to discover this underneath it, no wonder it was not stable. It was sitting on a few bits of wood, cement, silicone and some small bits of copper pipe.... 🤯

I cleaned everything up, replaced the flush syphon, anchored the cistern to the wall with screws and then used strong grab adhesive to ensure the toilet would be nice and sturdy 💪

💧 Customer had a burst pipe under their boiler. What did I do? I cut out the damaged pipe and put in a new piece of copper pipe fixing the leak.

🪛 The customer had attempted to temporarily fix the leak, however it needed a new pipe to feed the hot water outlets for the house.

💧Today I installed this new water cistern in a customer's loft.

This will feed their hot water cylinder and upstairs bathroom. The old one was in a bad condition and had no proper lid so had lots of debris inside it.

The new one has 2 brand new lever valves which will make isolation much easier in future and purpose made lids to keep out dust, debris and any nasties).
