Southport Brewery

The taste of success! Southport Brewery (Est 2004) brews traditional, handcrafted quality beers.

We are a small independent microbrewery, brewing real ale in the seaside town of Southport on the North West coast of England

16/07/2024

Rumours abound around town that we're opening a bar. I can categorically state that we are doing no such thing. Brewing beer is hard enough and, if you've ever met us in person, you'd know that we are not pretty enough to be public facing.

We can say that 'Young' Paul, who works here, had it in his mentally unwell head to open a bar on his own. This would have been his own venture and would be completely separate from Southport Brewery.

We hope that, if he continues down this dark path of hospitality and debatable customer service, he'd sell our beers to the community as he believed in the quality and demand for them within Southport.

Otherwise he'll be getting a massive pay-cut just in time for Xmas.

Hey guys! Just a quick reminder to vote in the General Election tomorrow!

Not because anything will ever change. We're well past that stage.
No. It's so you can complain with a clear conscience. Everybody loves a justified gripe, after all!

Decade has been brewed and is now currently conditioning in the barrels.

It will be available from next week. If we get enough people leaving comments about it, we'll even put some into the 5-litre cans.

Additionally, we've updated the shop as we keep forgetting it's there.

Tldr: We now stock a wider range of Gwynt-y-ddraig ciders online.

02/04/2024

Update time:

We are officially 20 years old which, we think, makes us the oldest running brewery in Merseyside. To celebrate this, we are planning on making the same beer we made to celebrate our first 10 years, Decade. Same name as we are also super lazy and so very, very tired.

Before that though, there's the Grand National on the 16th to think of. As such, we've already brewed National Hero which will be available in all good pubs and bars over the next 2 weeks.

Another excellent beer from a local brewery

We won the only Festival that matters this year and in the spirit of grace and good sportsmanship that we're known for:

HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES!?!

Big thanks to everyone who voted for us # # #

It's Saint Patrick's Day this weekend and, as a continued attempt to fulfil my NY resolution for the encouragement of more evil posts, I present to you my beer-related hot take:

People who drink Guinness are actually drinking a nitrokeg dark mild.

Those who believe it's a stout are merely deluding themselves.

07/03/2024

Not sure if anyone knows this but we supply the Fylde Fish Bar with our beer. Both of them. So you can enjoy the finest of British Beers with the finest of British cuisines.

Our customers have been loving the addition of Golden Sands to our drinks menu. 🍻
From local Southport brewery, this CAMRA winning golden coloured ale brings uplifting citrusy-bitterness flavours and is complete with a biscuit-y finish. (4% ABV)
Don't forget this is available on our takeaway, just ask one of our team... CHEERS!

I thought my town needed this so I quit my job to make it happen 02/03/2024

Nice little write-up in the Liverpool Echo News

Fortunately, they talked to Boss Paul so it's a professionally done interview whereas, as you can see from the state of our social media presence, I'm only aware of professionalism as a concept.

I thought my town needed this so I quit my job to make it happen Southport Brewery has been making beer for 20 years and is now the oldest operational brewery in Merseyside

Happy to report that the Golden Sands in The Thirsty Duck is absolutely spot on!

Both Paul and I would like to thank them for their top quality service and cellar keeping. It shows when someone really cares about what they do and we appreciate it even if nobody else does.

Can also highly recommend Hopworks Brew Co. with their American Red Ale 'Pictures In Rouge'.

21/02/2024

"Hey Paul! Where can I find your delicious beer to forcibly ingest through my breathing hole?" I hear absolutely nobody ask.
Well I'm going to tell you anyway.

Old Shrimper is currently on at The Guesthouse and the Beer Station.
Additionally, Golden Sands is on at The Thirsty Duck in Burscough as part of their 'Lancashire Brewery Challenge'. We're planning on heading down tomorrow afternoon to tip the competition in our favour as we desperately crave validation and winning a contest is the only way to scratch that particular itch.

Other than that, The Southport Tavern continues to serve our ales on cask and it's well worth a visit if you haven't done so already. Say hi to Jo if you see her. She's the best one.

🍺 The cask is back on in the Taproom🍺

🍻 We have 2 more cask from Southport Brewery available in the Taproom, unfortunately no dark on at the moment but it will return shortly.

“SOUTHPORT IPA” 3.6%
A light session IPA packed with citrusy hops. Big flavour, small ABV.

“GOLDEN SANDS” 4%
Golden in colour, flavoured with pleasant citrusy-bitterness flavours and a biscuity afternote.

We are in the running to be in the running for Southport and West Lancs Camra Pub of the year! If you’re member you can vote for us and you should have received an email to that effect!

The Guesthouse isn’t though because it has already won the award for the past three years.

I understand the thinking behind that in that the guys want to support and promote other venues but in the unlikely event that we won I personally would feel like we hadn’t won on our merit more by default!

So whilst we are very grateful if you vote for us I’d rather Gail and her team were in the running. A footballing analogy might be that Manchester City wouldn’t be allowed to win the league again! It’s outrageous as I’m sure you’ll all agree and that analogy was in no way purposefully provocative!

Got me thinking though what makes a pub of the year.

To be honest I don’t even think we are a pub we’re a bar. A beer-bar! If beer’s your priority then you’d be hard-pressed to argue with us being in the running. Granted we could do with a few more cask hand-pulls but that’s reliant on you lot coming in more and drinking more cask (I’d rather stick with fewer and maintain the quality than have too many)

There are plenty of more pubs out there doing nice pub things. Some of them are more historically significant, some are more involved in the community, some are just more nice and pubby!

I guess though to be a Camra pub to the year (POTY) you should really be a little bit of all those things as well as good cask beer.

07/02/2024

As an additional note: I'd also like to ask CAMRA why they seem so reluctant to nominate our beers for their awards? Is it because the last time we did, back in 2009, we won Champion Best Bitter of Britain and we were therefore blackballed from ever competing again?

30/01/2024

It's that time of year again when The Thirsty Duck in Burscough pits all the local breweries against each other in friendlybutnotreally competition against each other to determine the most beloved brewery in the Lancastrian area.

Last year, we were eliminated in the first round though the ones that beat us went on to win the entire thing (Cloudwater) so we really came second and that's the truth I choose to believe.

This year, we're up against Hawkshead and Hopworks. Both are excellent breweries but need to know their place beneath us.

As you are the judge of these events, I wholly encourage you to head down on Tuesday 20th February and order only our beer. You don't even need to drink it though I advise you do as it's delicious. It's available until Saturday 24th when the next contenders get their shot. The winner is determined by whomsoever sells out first.

Be sure to crush all pretenders to our rightful throne mercilessly xx

The more socially literate of you should already know but we did a bit of a collaboration with southportwhisky waaaaaay back in 2022 with Old Shrimper.

This time, they’ve decided to create a whisky to commemorate Golden Sands. If you’re curious about how it tastes, then you can buy a bottle from them by following this link: https://www.southportwhisky.co.uk/product/golden-sands-22yo-blended-grain-scotch-whisky/?fbclid=IwAR1nIpD3QDpnh-AkxgHW31O6bPpYyrEa7rvQCe9-33EoFfQhb4NXPdYYeIs

Or you join the Whisky Trail they’re running this weekend (or just buy a shot from a respectable establishment that has already bought a bottle - see our previously shared posts for hints).

Boss Paul has even managed to get a few bottles from Victor by giving him the puppy dog eyes and appealing to his better nature*. So if you’re after a bottle, we’ve got 3 left and they’re £60 each. You’ll need to come see us though so it’s not all rainbows and happy sunshine.

*It had to be Boss Paul as whenever I try to charm people I'm reported to the Hague for violating the code of the Geneva Convention for being a font of despair and eldritch, but mortal, horror which truth be told seems a bit rude.

One of the best drinking establishments in Southport (and surrounding area) and one that is passionate about the beer they serve!

Perfect combination

03/01/2024

A New Year has started. Another lap around the sun has begun. We sincerely hope that, this year, you all get the nice things that you deserve.

This is also a time for deep introspection. Last year we made the mistake of trying to improve ourselves. I have learned from that mistake.

So this year, our resolution is to instead encourage our more evil side. Expect more sarcasm. More mocking remarks. Even more hate on Tim Martin. More parodic commentary about the superficial marketing media used by more successful businesses until Boss Paul finally sees the light and bans me from all social media or Heineken finally see our potential and I get locked into my own personal hellscape of Social Media & Marketing Manager in a 10 year, £15,000,000 contract.

Happy 2024 everybody. Please buy our beer and remember to warn your friends and people you love about ever making the terrible decision to follow us on Facebook ❤️

24/12/2023

Seeing as tomorrow is Christmas and it’s, apparently, the time that miracles take place; let’s all wish that the world could be a little (or a lot) kinder and that, hopefully, next year will be the time that everything starts getting good again as opposed to the absolute hell it’s been steadingly heading towards for the past however many years.

Failing that, let’s all wish that Heineken see us as the very real threat to their business that we are and they offer us a cool £1,000,000 buyout to which I shall see £3.80 for the cost of a pint.🤞

Either way, hope you all have a very Happy Xmas or whatever you celebrate.

Cheers from us 🍻

13/12/2023

I wasn’t expecting to post again till Friday but the bottles of Eagles Dare that we’ve been eagerly awaiting have come in a couple of days early.

They’ll be delivered to all good local retailers in the next couple of days.

Better out than in, after all!

12/12/2023

With the preparations for Christmas coming to a head at the end of next week, it seems like a good idea to remind you that, if you’re thinking of having a barrel of beer off us for your family and/or friends to share with, then the sooner we know the better.

But if you leave it till last minute (don’t leave it till the last minute), then we’ll still try our best to help out.

£120 for a 9 gallon (70ish pints)
£70 for a 4.5 gallon (45ish pints)

And you get the use of a cask engine if you want it too.

Photos from Tap and Bottles's post 21/11/2023

This may be your last chance for a pint of High Tide this year. Possibly longer if we do our usual trick of forgetting to brew it when the high tides are about.

15/11/2023

Good news!

After an extended delay, we’re very happy (and relieved) to inform you that bottles of Golden Sands & Southport IPA are back in stock!!
