It's thought that only 12% of plastic waste is actually recycled in UK processing factories. Taking part in will provide evidence of the extent of our plastic waste which can be used to urge governments to bring in tougher legislation
(Note: the count acknowledges that plastic is necessary in some sanitary and medical items and so these are not included)

Let’s investigate to stop the plastic crisis 🔍🚮

is back! We’re supporting and to run the UK’s biggest investigation into household plastic waste, Get counting to show that the plastics waste crisis is still with us - and that’s why world leaders need to take urgent action to make the UN global as bold as it can be.

We know that the crisis is impacting people living in poverty the worst. Globally, mismanaged waste is causing up to a million deaths each year – that’s one person dying every 30 seconds. Understanding our plastic problem in the UK can help us push for global action that will tackle plastic waste’s effects on those living in poverty.

'No Mow May' is one approach to increasing biodiversity in your garden but here is another. One of our members shares this valuable advice!

" For many years now I have covered a small area in my garden over the winter. A piece of old carpet, or plastic, or even newspapers and stones, if left in place, will suppress plant growth and leave the soil bare in spring. This reduces competition from coarser perennials allowing the annuals to grow, flower and produce pollen and nectar for our bees and butterflies. My favourite flowers have 'corn' in their name - corn poppies, corn marigolds, corn cockles, as well as the stunningly beautiful blue cornflowers. These come in packets with names like 'meadow mix' available online and in Garden Centres. The original 'wild' seeds are thought to have been brought over from Europe to the Brtish Isles in the Iron Age, mixed in with wheat, flax and other crops. Eventually in late autumn ther area can once again be covered over"
