IT PASSED!

Today the MGBGT passed its first MOT in 9 years with flying colours, this more or less brings to an end a 7 year long overhaul, with only a couple of minor running adjustments to tweek before handing back to her owner in the next few weeks.

This means that the final project to complete the "Mighty Mini" can of course get started once more, to get it ready for painting hopefully in the summer, and of course reassembly after that.

This week also marks 3 long years since leaving the old workshop, things havent always gone to plan, sadly projects have taken far longer than expected due to space and other constraints however things are in a much better position than they were 3 years ago, so thats a bonus.

I'm still not intending on taking on any further work for the forseable.

At long last its done - the 1967 MGB-GT is finally finished and complete once more, all that remains is a good clean, an MOT to check it over plus any remedial work following testing.

Its been a very long job thats taken a year - 18 months longer than expected. It has tried and pushed my paitence several times through out its restoration. I am very pleased and grateful to be able to hand it over back to its owner in the next few weeks, ready to enjoy in the summer.

Well after a number of years and more recently seemingly endless weeks of troubleshooting the 1967 MGBGT is finally up and running, yes it needs tuning and adjusting, but its finally running, bringing its completion ever closer in the new year.

Been doing some proper old school engineering today as ive been lapping the valves in the cylinder head for the MGBGT, while it was refitted to the engine only a few months ago, a lack of self foresight was to check the valves, upon coming to fire the old girl up, it was found to have extreemly low compression, and would not fire, after a number of other typical tests there was no choice but to pull the head and see whats going on.

As can be seen in the second pic the exhaust valve seat has just been lapped and is nice and clean, the inlet as you can see has a layer of thin rust on it, this is the likely cause of the issue. So its a case of lap them all and give it a good clean all over and fingers crossed we get good compression this time round

(yes i know the head surface needs a clean up too)

The seemingly never ending task of getting the MG BGT finished is finally getting near completion, with fewer and fewer jobs to do on the steady march to the finish line.

Had a good time at Middlewich Classic Car and Bike show this weekend, selling a wide range of 2nd hand spares for a variety of classics

16/06/2023

After a very long and frustraiting wait, I've finally been able to start getting the interior trim into the 67 MGBGT theres still a way to go for this one but it is at least heading nearer to the finish line.

Sadly due to space restrictions and other priorities, plus the unexpected wait for the trim and other parts has meant further delays to both the mg and to the Mini project. Once the MG is finished there will be space for work on the Mini to commence allowing it to be able to move forwards towards getting ready for the paint shop

The 1967 MGB-GT is getting near to the finish line at long last, and this week has seen the fitment of the fully refurbished Britax Sunroof

Photos from KGC Engineering's post 04/11/2022

Slowly but surely she's coming together!

Our 1967 MGBGT project is looking good now as she steps ever closer to the finish line

and yes the sun roof still needs finishing

Photos from KGC Engineering's post 27/07/2022

Our Mini project has taken a massive step forwards today with the application of the POR15 anti rust paint on the underside. Theres still a long way to go before she is ready for the paint shop but its a nice place to finally be able to get to on what has been and continues to be an extensive rebuild.

Next up for the Mini is the application of internal chassis paint in the cavities, followed by seam sealer then another layer of the POR15. Once thats completed it can then be rewheeled ready for the "outside/topside" to be finished off and completed before fitting of the doors, etc and an eventual onwards move to the paint shop.

Update: - A week of 2 Halves

First of all a visit was made to the welding team down in Kidderminster who are tackling the major project that is the MG ZA Magnette for me. I must say im really impressed with the work done so far in getting this old girl solid once again. I outsourced this due to my own time availability plus the loss of the workshop last year, would have made it difficult for me to do this aspect of the project.

Secondly ive been making good progress on the 67 MGB GT a number of parts have gone on including the overhauled and refurbished heater box. Additionally ive also put my aluminium welding skills to the test with the manufacture of a brand new Britax type Sunroof frame, the original sadly has gone missing as such resulting in a new one needing to be made. its been a challenge but its now finally coming together.

As you can see i have plenty of work to keep me busy, as theres also the Mini project to complete the welding work on. As such im not able to take on any further work large or small due to time and space availability.

Master cylinder refurbishment for an MGB

The photos show a bit of the process in the refurbishment of the master cyclinders for the MGBGT project im currently working on. Thankfully both cylinders were in good enough condition to be restored and rebuilt.

First off all it begins with a de rust and strip down having drained as much fluid as possible, flollowing a clean up of the casings back to shiny bare metal these were then given 4 coates of filler primer with sanding in between, this allows any small dents and pitting to be removed, once as smooth as possible the top coats were applied, this was a "Cast Aluminium" colour to help retain some of the original look.

Finally the new rebuild kits for the pistons were assembled and fitted following the instructions and taking care to make sure everything goes in in the right order. once all back together its time to mount them in the pedle box frame before mounting to the car ready to be piped up. New filler caps are arriving this week.

Its a simple enough process that has taken a few days to complete allowing for the paint drying times. However as i know not every classic car owner wants too or has the skills to refurbish components like these, this is something that i am happy to offer to classic car owners (price will depend on the job) Just drop me a message for details.

A before and after here.

I've been cleaning up these master cylinders for an MGB. As you can see I've already started the brake one and still need to start the clutch one. Currently you can not get the correct style brake master cylinders, the replacement is a poor looking plastic topped one. Thankfully once i stripped this one down i found its internals to be in really good condition, its just the exterior that requires some attention. Once cleaned up they will be primed and painted in a light grey to help them look their best before reassembly with new seals and then fitment onto the pedal box and into the car.

After 4 years, today I left the workshop at Goyt Mill for the last time.

The last few weeks have been busy moving tools, spares, parts and cars into storage, back to owners etc. This choice was not one i made lightly but has been the best decision i could have made. With the ongoing pandemic still causing issues getting parts, and a constant amount of overheads going out every month, sadly it was only a matter of time before the cash ran out.

This has inevitably meant that i have had to cut costs to save finances and keep going in some form or other. As such, I will make good on my promice to my current client project work that these will be completed over the next 2 years or so. However there will not be any openings for any other smaller work such as service and MOT's from elsewhere during this time.

I have a lot of sorting out to do, to get myself sorted over the next 2-3 weeks so that i can then continue what work i am able to get done with the parts that are available.

Thank you to everyone who has helped with the move and supported me over the last 9 and a half years

Cheers

Kevin

Massive Huge thanks to Gareth from GC Auto Solutions, for giving us a much needed helping hand with the electrical bits on the Spitfire thats currently in. Its had a number of electrical gremlins that baffled us, which thankfully now seem to be sorted. Hope we get it finished ready to hand back to the owner before we leave our current workshop in 6 weeks time

Theres a long way to go with it. Given a good few projects have now left us I can now put the time and effort in to get the mini back up to speed

21/09/2020

Well well well look who was brought out In to the sun for a wash and polish, for the start of the final details before handing back to her owner.

We have had the E type in for around 3 years, with the work done spread out over the time, as per the owners request. It has certainly tried and tested us in many ways and a fair bit of blood sweat and certainly tears have been shead. In some ways we will both be sad and happy to see it go home but certainly proud of the result of the efforts put in.

22/08/2020

For the first time in at least 15 years the Triumph Herald 13/60 has moved under its own power. Few bits on the snagging list and some finishing off jobs to do, before completing and handing back to her owner. A very positive end to the week.
