Yesterday, amidst a welcome glimmer of sunshine, we hosted a keepy-up challenge to celebrate the .⚽
It was a fantastic effort by everyone, filled with plenty of laughs. Congratulations to Tom from Development for securing 1st place with an impressive score of 21 🏆, Farooq from Manufacturing for taking 2nd place with a score of 15 ,🥈 and James from Sales for achieving 3rd place with a score of 13🥉!
In true English fashion, the rain eventually made an appearance, but it couldn't dampen our spirits or our smiles.
Can you detect PD from outside of a cable termination box?
Detecting Partial Discharges (PD) is crucial in maintaining switchgear integrity and preventing high voltage faults. Ultrasonics offer an efficient method for early defect detection, facilitating timely maintenance. However, modern enclosed switchgear often lacks a clear air pathway between the defect and the PD detector, trapping acoustic emission inside.
As a result, external detection can be challenging. To address this, internal ultrasonic sensors can be installed for spot testing or continuous monitoring. Alternatively, as showcased in this video, ultrasonic energy sometimes escapes through gaps or air vents in the switchgear, enabling detection from outside the cable termination box.

A big thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey. Here’s to new beginnings and continued success!
In this week’s , the detection of surface tracking is shown on an 11kV circuit breaker. The testing was carried out after this PD activity was detected by a permanently installed ASM PD Monitor.⚡🔧
At the time of testing, activity levels were medium but it can be seen from the monitor data that the activity increases during periods of high humidity.
This panel has been scheduled for maintenance.

High Frequency CTs (HFCTs) used for partial discharge detection in HV cables are passive components with very stable performance characteristics.
In this test, a new CT48 is tested alongside one that has been permanently installed as part of a substation monitor in London for 12 years. It can be seen that the performances of the two sensors are almost identical.
This classic HFCT was launched by in 2004 and we expect to see similarly consistent performance in our oldest sensors, now 20 years old!
