Although we immediately think of Scandinavia when we think of Oðinn, he was (and many of the other Germanic Gods and Goddesses were) worshipped here in Britain and Western Europe as Woden long before the ‘Viking Age’. He is most frequently remembered as the Allfather god of war, but he was also god of magic and wisdom and remains the male archetype of the Shaman.

The rune Ansuz means “mouth of god” or “word/breath of god” and it represents sacred sounds. Everything in creation contains sacred sound as a powerful life force.

He is accompanied by his 2 wolves Geri and Freki and later also by his ravens Huginn and Muginn.

The “Croaking” Shaman - why are you “croaking”?

Huginn and Muninn are the messengers of Odin. They are the ravens “thought” and “memory” who croak (crows caw and ravens croak) the news from the 9 realms into the Allfather’s ear as he watches over Midgard (our realm) from his hall Valhallr in Asgard, in the Upper realms of the branches of Yggradsil, the Norse World Tree.

Woden is the English name for Odin - for the Norse gods were worshipped in Britain too, with slight variations to their names - and some historians believe they were worshipped here in Britain before Scandinavia.

Sound is really important for me - I use vocal sound in my healing work - I also wrote my masters dissertation on bioacoustics (in harbour porpoises).
