How is Larry the cat going to take to his new housemate? 😼
As the Prime Minister and his family move into Downing Street, the nation’s infamous chief mouse-catcher, Larry, will no longer be the only kit-on-the-block, as Sir Keir Starmer’s cat, JoJo, joins him!
Welcoming new furry family members can be exciting, but it’s important that they're introduced to everyone in the household, especially existing pets, in the right way.
Vet Nurse, Gemma, said: “Cats are naturally solitary animals and, like Larry appears to feel at Downing Street, they're usually quite happy being the only pet in the household. However, there are some steps you can take should you be looking to introduce a second pet into the family to help create a peaceful transition.” 👇
- Create separate constituencies: Setting up separate safe spaces (ideally in a quiet room) for each pet will provide each of them with a private place they can call their own and hide, should there be any disruptions in household politics.
- Scent swapping: In an ideal world, new and existing pets should be given a few days to get used to each other’s scent before they meet. If you’re bringing your pet home from a rescue centre or breeder, you may be able to take blankets with your current pet’s scent on. This can be introduced to your new pet so that they can familiarise themselves with your current pet’s smell before they arrive at their new home.
- Building a coalition: When they first come home, if possible, keep both pets in separate safe spaces by using a baby gate, where each furry member of the household can have their own space to explore freely and start to familiarise themselves with their surroundings. And once your new furry family member is well-adjusted, allow your pets to become aware of each other from their individual safe spots.
Remember, you’ll need to continue closely monitoring your cat’s body language, even when they seem comfortable together, to make sure they are happy and not feeling stressed by the situation ⚠️

We recently posthumously awarded Search and Recovery dog, Barra, with his very own , for his unwavering devotion to duty and service to society 🏅
Specialising in searching for the bodies of missing people underwater, Barra worked alongside his owner and handler, Iain Marshall, since 2011, helping to locate missing people on waterways across the UK! And he was often requested personally by families who were desperate to find their loved ones 🙏
Thanks to Barra’s incredible work, many families have been reunited with the bodies of their loved ones and have been able to lay them to rest.
After an incredible 11-year career, Barra retired in 2022 due to mobility issues. He enjoyed two years retirement, but sadly, Barra passed away in May this year, aged 14 💔
Iain said: “I am absolutely over the moon that Barra has received the PDSA Order of Merit posthumously.
“We never did any of this for recognition in the form of awards or medals, we did it to help families who needed us, but none the less, we are delighted to see Barra’s commitment to search and recovery being recognised by PDSA in this way.
“Barra was an incredible Search and Rescue Dog but also a loving and important member of our family – we had an incredible bond and I miss him every day.”
It’s an honour for us to acknowledge his life’s work with this prestigious award. Congratulations, and may you rest in peace over the rainbow bridge, Barra 🌈

Four-year-old guinea pig, Belle, was squeaking in pain every time she moved! Worried that something was wrong, Belle’s owner, Matthew, brought her in to get checked over by the team at our Glasgow Shamrock Street Pet Hospital 😟
When they arrived, Belle was given a thorough examination right away, to find out what the cause of her extreme pain was. This was when vet, Olivia, discovered a firm mass in Belle’s abdomen which raised suspicions of ovarian cysts. Olivia said: “We gave Belle some medication to relieve her pain and discomfort and to support her digestive system to help avoid extra complications, and arranged for further tests once she was stabilised.”
After some x-rays and an ultrasound scan, the team’s suspicions were confirmed and Belle needed to undergo an intricate operation to remove her ovaries and uterus 😢
Olivia added: "During the surgery, I found that Belle's ovaries had swollen to bigger than the average Labradors! I was amazed that she had been carrying on with them in her tiny abdomen." 😧
Thankfully, Belle came through the surgery and recovered well. She was discharged home the same day with pain relief and medication.
Matthew said: "Without the amazing veterinary care from PDSA, it's likely Belle wouldn't have survived. She is the leader in a group of four, so who knows what it would have done to the others emotionally. I am really thankful for everything PDSA has done." 🥰

62-year-old Julie sadly had to have her beloved dog, Gracie, put to sleep last year 😢
During this heart-breaking time, Julie was so pleased with the loving care given by the team at our Cardiff Pet Hospital, the Marian and Christina Ionescu Centre, that she wanted to do something to help raise funds for other poorly pets in Gracie’s memory.
Julie said: “Gracie was my whole world. When she had to be put down, I was in a right state. I even collapsed in the room at the vets as I couldn’t handle it! The grief was completely overwhelming. But PDSA were absolutely brilliant with us – not just with Gracie in her final moments, but with me, as I came to terms with losing my best friend. I can’t thank them enough. After a few months, I thought I have got to do something to give back.”
Despite having a paralysed leg leaving her disabled, Julie has done many challenges and events for different charities over the years. And to show her gratitude for our charity, she decided to dust off her collection tin and take on a new challenge for us.
Julie hosted a club night at Ringland Labour Club in Newport! She organised a great band to play on the night and had prizes donated that she used to form a raffle. Through ticket sales, the raffle and generous party-goers, Julie managed to raise an amazing £2,000 for our charity! All of which will go towards helping more pets like Gracie. What an amazing achievement 👏
Julie added: “Organising this event in memory of Gracie gave me some meaning and purpose, something to get up and focus on. I’d encourage anyone who can to fundraise for charity, it’s so rewarding.”
From all of us at PDSA, we want to say a huge thank you to Julie!

Imagine having a 10cm blade of grass stuck up your nose! Well... That's exactly what happened to our handsome pet patient, Ginge 😖
When his owner, Laura, noticed Ginge was struggling to breathe and sneezing blood, she immediately contacted our Nottingham Pet Wellbeing Centre, The Marian and Christina Ionescu Hospital, for help.
The team asked Laura to bring Ginge in, so they could have a closer look to see what was wrong. Thankfully, they were able to identify what was causing Ginge a problem… He had a 10cm long blade of grass lodged in his nose!
Catherine, one of our vets, explained: “This is common amongst cats and can be tricky to diagnose and treat. When they get a blade of grass lodged in the back of their nose or throat, it can be very uncomfortable for them and could lead to an infection. It can also cause severe bouts of sneezing or coughing, and in some cases, your cat can start sneezing or coughing up blood which can be very distressing for both cat and owner.”
Thanks to Laura’s quick reactions, our veterinary team were able to sedate Ginge and safely pull out the blade of grass.
Laura said: “You couldn’t see anything stuck in his nose or in his mouth so it must have been pretty far back. After the vets got it out Ginge was back to his normal self almost instantly. He was a stray cat who used to come and sit in our garden. One day he came in through the back door, and then he never left. We tried to see if he was owned by anyone but nothing came of it. We wouldn’t be without him for the world though, he’s amazing! I can’t thank PDSA enough."
Unfortunately, it can be really difficult to prevent this from happening, as cats will often wander off where we can’t always keep an eye on them. If you notice that your cat eats grass in your own garden, be sure to keep it cut short, to reduce the risk of the longer grass blades getting stuck ⚠️
[Visual description: Ginger cat, Ginge, lying down on a green towel. Next to him on a white piece of paper is the 10cm blade of grass that was pulled out of his nose. In a small pink circle is a picture of the plant out of the garden that the grass blade came from, which has a warning symbol next to it.]

Is your dog drinking and weeing more than usual? 🤔
There are common reasons why this may be happening including:
- A urine infection
- Diabetes
- Cushing’s Disease
- An infected womb (pyometra)
- Kidney disease
If you're worried about your dog, it's important to take them to see the vet. If possible, take a fresh urine sample to your appointment so they can get the help they need ❤️
