Another successful audit completed by our Health and Safety Manager today. A big well done to our team members working hard on our sites!

We would like to share some of the amazing work which is currently being completed over at M.V. Kelly Limited in order to raise money the following charities:

Already this month, they have completed the 3 Peaks Challenge and will shortly be going on to complete a cycling challenge of riding from their office in Birchwood all the way up to Blackpool.

We have made a donation to support their efforts and we will also share the link for their fundraiser for if anybody would also like to donate.

Demolition & Asbestos removal recently completed in Manchester central using only HVO fuel.
The contract was completed to budget, ahead of programme and without an accident or complaint.

S J Walchester Ltd were awarded the contract to demolish & clear the site of 5 former apartment blocks and former garages site in Chesterton, Stoke on Trent.
The works included the construction of approximately 400m of 2.4m high timber hoarding with vision panels, asbestos removals, strip out, demolition, substructure removal and proof excavation to 2m below existing levels and removal of all wastes arisings from site.
Challenges associated with the works included;

• Working within a built up residential area – prior to commencement on site a letter drop was carried out which also included an invite to a “meet the builder” event so that local residents could attend and have the works explained, meet the site team and also ask any questions. The success criteria of the extensive communication process was that no complaints were received, in addition the site received a Considerate Constructors Scheme audit with an excellent score achieved.
• Working around live drainage – running through the site were both a live foul sewer and a storm water culvert. Ahead of works commencing the runs were surveyed and surface marked. Road plates were used to protect the foul sewer manholes and bog mats were used to create a crossing point over the culvert for the demolition rigs with a further standoff zone created using fencing to prevent plant tracking over.
• Working around live services – The 400m of 2.4m high timber hoarding mainly followed the existing pavements therefore was in close proximity to existing services throughout. Surveys of the services were undertaken with surface marking carried out as necessary. Further investigations were also undertaken by hand dug trial holing. The safe systems of work employed ensured no service strike incident occurred.
• Construction traffic – from the outset a Traffic management plan was implemented which was also issued to all suppliers delivering to the site to state the delivery times, access routes to be used. As the site access was approached via a residential road and trained traffic marshal was in attendance to ensure vehicles observed the speed limit and manoeuvres were strictly controlled. The site was managed by removing hardstanding working out of the site, this ensured clean running surfaces were maintained preventing debris being transferred on to the highway by vehicles leaving site. Over 200 loads of arisings were removed from the site without issue or complaint.
• Additional asbestos – during substructure removal asbestos cement was discovered adhered to an area of floor slab where it had been used as shuttering. Upon discovery works ceased and the area was cordoned off with suppression applied. S J Walchester’s asbestos division attended site to take samples of the material which came back positive as asbestos cement (Chrysotile). The material was then quarantined before being loaded under controlled conditions for removal for disposal at a permitted site.
The works were undertaken using S J Walchester 20t and 30t demolition rigs under full dust suppression. All arisings from the site were removed by the S J Walchester transport fleet, to avoid unnecessary impact to the residents all inert arisings were removed to the S J Walchester recycling facility in Stoke for processing and sale as recycled aggregates.
The contract was completed to budget, programme, without a complaint or incident.

The holidays are known as such a fun and exciting time. But for some people, the holidays are not so much . Remember to give back to your community a little extra this time of year, because it could change someone’s holiday season.🎄

This year S J Walchester Ltd have carried out Operation Christmas Child. With the help of our team we filled full to the brim six shoe boxes, one for every age and gender on their chart. 🎁

These have now been dropped off to a local church to us allowing a few lucky children a very merry Christmas. 🎅🏻🎁

You can carry out your part this week by bringing joy and hope to kids in need around the world by making donations, buying toys and essentials for children of all ages, or volunteer helping pack shoeboxes. 🎁🌍
