Hi Everyone,

On behalf of the committee, I am delighted to finally announce that official club rides, both road and off-road, will recommence from Saturday April 3rd.

As a British Cycling affiliated club, Stourbridge Cycling Club can organise official rides with up to 15 riders if we comply with government and British Cycling Covid requirements. These include Track and Trace and social distancing before and after rides. They are necessary for legal and insurance purposes, so we must comply. The exemption only applies during the ride not before or after.
This contrasts with an unofficial ride, such as a group of friends riding together, that is restricted to six.

Shortly we will email members with details of these requirements, please take some time to read them. The email will outline our Track and Trace system which we have made as simple as possible but be aware is an essential requirement. It will also provide evidence that you are on an official ride. We will keep a link to our Track and Trace system pinned to this page, so it is readily available for both members and guest riders. If you do not receive the email please contact us at [email protected].

It is likely that the public will not be aware of this exemption. There could also be some confusion with the police although British Cycling will contact them. We will include in the members email a letter published by British Cycling that can be downloaded or carried on a club ride explaining the exemption and that our rides comply.

Start times and locations will be the same as before except that the Summerhill rides will start in the Harvester car park not the layby. There is more space to split groups and social distancing will be easier.

We appreciate that groups of up to 15 will seem large. This is a maximum and so you are encouraged to ride in smaller groups which many riders will feel more comfortable with and are easier to manage.

Finally, we want to ask for your cooperation and help. We need people to step forward and help with the organisation of rides especially with groups sizes at the start which we know from experience can be difficult.

Regards,

Kevin Payton
Chairman

Dear Members,

We hope you are keeping well and enjoying the return to some form of normality.

On 18th June British Cycling published their guidance for a safe return to sanctioned cycling activity. The full version of which can be viewed here:
https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/zuvvi/media/The_Way_Forward_18-06-20_FINAL.pdf

The club committee have reviewed this with some care. We have also consulted on today's government announcement on changes due to come into affect on 4th July and we would like to update you on the club’s position.

The guidance is clear that any activity which is sanctioned by the club must meet public health guidelines and the club must take responsibility for club member safety. In order to facilitate this, British Cycling have provided recommendations, the key points of which are as follows:

Group sizes should not exceed 6 riders
2 meters must be adhered to on club sanctioned rides
Hygiene protocols must be in place

Historically controlling group sizes has always been a challenge and we do not feel we can responsibly control group sizes to a maximum of 6 riders. We also feel it is practically too difficult to enforce riders adhering to being 2 meters apart whilst on group rides.

As a result, we have taken the decision not to permit club rides at this stage.

We recognise that many of you may feel that you can take personal responsibility for this advice and as a result may wish to participate in unofficial group rides. We kindly ask that you do not participate in these rides wearing Stourbridge Cycling Club clothing as these rides are not currently supported by the club.

We will continue to review this position in accordance with advice from British Cycling. Thank you for you continued support and look forward to a time when we can safely ride together again.

Thanks.

Kevin.

Congratulations Wally!

Stourbridge stalwart, Wally Fowler set a new World Best Hour Record at Newport velodrome today. Competing in the 85-89 age category, Wally covered an amazing 34.602km/21.5miles in the hour.
