Reaching this milestone signifies a lifetime of notable achievement, treasured experiences and cherished memories.
I honestly believe my academic achievements were a product of his coaching, guidance & support.
Without doubt I inherited his abundance of patience, strong moral compass & hard work ethic that make me the HR professional I like to think I am today.
Bonded by belief on many subjects not least WBA and our early days as season ticket holders in the Megson era!
Still catching me when I fall…mainly with D.I.Y, dog sitting & grandson duties!

August has lived up to its latin translation - majestic & magnificent. As hard as the balance between work and family is during the six week holidays, we have had some magnificent moments.
Slicing through HR work this month in the form of;

☀️creating an ethics policy
☀️salvaging incorrect process to protect business
☀️updating contracts of employment
☀️onboarding new clients
I don’t know what it is about summer but it’s the months I find that unwanted conduct and behaviour in the workplace often bubble up.
I think the change in resource by way of annual leave and business summer tempo allows Directors and Business Owners to pay closer attention to people management. My boss in industry called it midsummer madness.
I love the onset of September - is like a New Year reset! It’s not to late to achieve your HR goals for 2024 and I’d love to work with you to deliver your HR objectives!

There is a simple reason that salary was continued to be paid in this high profile case ……it’s called employment law.
Employment law applies to all organisations.
I’ve had a few similar cases on this topic and
severity in my career and until proven in the criminal courts, employment continues. Once proven, dismissal on the grounds of some other substantial reason can be applied.
“The presumption of innocence until proven guilty is a basic principle of English law.
Employers usually have a contractual right to suspend an employee if the employee’s conduct is called into serious question, for example, if criminal charges are brought – but that does not permit the employer to terminate the contract or end payment.”

Wow, two weeks already into the six week school recess! The break from the school run and trillion taxi 🚖 journeys to activities every week is totally welcome.
We do love carefree days of hanging out with friends, no agenda, just enjoying natures playground. The car boot carries staple items of cricket and football equipment and we just go where the day takes us. Strawberry picking was a hit!
Plenty of work underway, like many I adjust my working hours and patterns to keep Goodwin HR revving every day!
Lots of new business set up work underway. I’m producing contracts of employment and onboarding advice for businesses who are employing one or two members of staff for the first time. Looking forward to my meeting with a grab hire Company today.

REFLECTIONS
Zachs last day at primary school . I’m not sad for the end of this era, for us it’s a celebration of a period of time that has brought much joy.
It’s a celebration of many special moments he has brought to the family through his educational experiences and for us as parents where through his experiences, we have grown personally too.
We have journeyed with some wonderful people who have become solid and reliable friends and we continually offer each other a network
of support for lift sharing to activities, childcare for enabling us to continue to work and some seriously good social times!
Our client network has expanded through meeting new people/new referrals too!
We wish all of his buddies success, good health and happiness as they make their next move.
Mi casa es su casa. Our home is always open to Zachs friends, no invitation needed. 🏠 and we look forward to new friendships too!
Long may the friendships and bonds continue. 💙

Where do you get 20 tonnes of horse manure from at short notice 🐴💩? That has been my personal challenge this week for my garden project!
Faced with this stinky problem, I really wasn’t sure where to procure such quantities. 🤷♀️
It didn’t take me long to think logically and laterally and reflect on my contacts with equestrian interests. 48 hours later a local farmer delivered the 💩!
Networking and contacts are EVERYTHING.
You can’t know what you don’t know, but you do need to know who to turn to in order to find solutions.
Business owners are NOT expected to be experts in HR and people management, but having the instinct to recognise the signs of when it’s time to talk and engage with an expert is essential.

No mid week Wednesday slumping at Goodwin HR! But maybe little bit of rule breaking…..

On the personal front we were all in hot pursuit of vitamin sea 🌊. The dog 🐶 deserved a holiday after his six week sickness saga and I can’t deny I was in need of change of scenery. So we broke a rule (yes even squeaky clean HR people break boundaries) and skipped school - all for the greater good.
Lunchtime break today at Sandymouth beach and what an area of outstanding beauty. I LOVE this part of the world - surf culture suits me 🏄♀️- no timescales, no dress code, no pretentiousness just beautiful people and places.

I’ll be super happy to see Friday this week so my 11 year old boy can return to his childhood in a more normalised school environment and atmosphere. Will you?
It’s SATS week across the country and our 10 and 11 year olds nationwide are sitting exams. 10 and 11!
I sat exams for a 10 year period - age 16 + and yes I get their purpose, necessity and reason for existence but I can’t see many advantages to examination at such a young age. Some may disagree but this is my sentiment and my feeling.
Our (minimal) prep has been about rest, good sleep & feeding the brain. It’s a low key approach here.
My HR rador senses parent and school apprehension is on high alert for achievement which transcends into the child. We are creating anxiety and downward pressure in very young age group. And we wonder why the challenges nationwide with mental health is at an all time high and presenting so prevalently in young people.
It was refreshing to meet my neighbour last week who reminded me that her 18 year old (Straight A GCSE, A level and now nailing a first at Uni on a highly credible degree course)… didn’t succeed at SATS.
It’s a pity there isn’t a SAT for personality and charisma …the natural characteristics that define our leaders of the future. Academics alone won’t cut it. Interpersonal skills are fundamental to leadership and career success.

In sickness and in health….
I’m human in this Human Resources world too and I have had to flex my work to navigate the bumps in the road these last 10 days and for the foreseeable.
I’ve needed to take time off for dependants at short notice and I certainly need to work flexibly in the short term to help Richard Goodwin Insolvency Practitioner whose foot surgery finally went ahead yesterday to address those sporting injuries of old.
They say bad luck runs in threes and we’ve certainly
experienced that! We’ve needed the expertise of most emergency services via hospital, police & vet, pretty much in a 36 hour window.
We’re good. On the road to recovery and we adapt, reset and go again next week. Hope we will be back
to bright lights and sunny days super quick.

And the final whistle has blown today and not just on this season but our five year ‘Shark’ story 🦈. We draw to a natural conclusion, aligned to the primary school years closing in too!
Today we wholeheartedly reflect on success and achievement – but it is not about trophy counting or where we finished in the league every year. Our biggest victory is our team effort and focus in ‘shaping humans’, and that is the best trophy of all🏆.
You can be the grassroots player/parent/fan that wants to obsess and focus on the score, the opposition, which league you are in, who scored, monitoring who your friends are playing for, how other teams are performing OR you can choose to be part of a team focused on building foundations. You can channel your mind and energy into building foundations brick by brick.🏠
It was always about the ‘foundations’ during the formative years. Technical football development aside, the foundations of loyalty, commitment, attendance, punctuality, team work, passion, pride, longevity, respect, character building, personality and desire are the greater success outcomes that set this team of players up for high school, employment & beyond. Futuristically these are lifelong qualities that form the fundamentals long after the game of football has ended.
To journey together unified by football during the primary school years has and always will be special and unique. Epic effort and commitment from parents on and off the pitch. We wish all players the very best in their next football moves & high school journeys and long may the boys remain united in shared experiences and lifelong friendships.
Now it is time to build the first floor…….
