“Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.” 🌎

Over here in Milden we’ve been celebrating a little early! This morning we headed out at the crack of dawn to do our bit for our world, by doing a roadside litter pick 🗑️ In one hour we collected 7 full bags of disposable vapes, cans, bottles (many full of wee - yum), crisp packets, McDonalds packaging and so much more. Head over to our Instagram stories for more exiting finds https://www.instagram.com/mildentudorbarnandbunkhouse

It’s not every day a (your daughter’s) wedding at Milden Hall is featured in The Times.

Thanks to gorgeous photos by Lucy J Toms Photography yesterday we felt rather famous. We rushed out to grab a paper to see Juliet’s cunning plans, hatched months before the engagement, splashed on page 76 for all to see!

Woops 😬 luckily the groom/son-in-law took it pretty well and hey, he is quite a lovely catch. Full article here to hear the whole story: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/i-always-thought-he-was-a-catch-bg9smcdvk

A wonderful 🎉 60th birthday 🎉 celebration for a wonderful person - with singing, speeches, dancing and delicious food. The loveliest quote from the birthday queen herself…

“Definitely the best party I've ever had and one of the best weekends I've had. I've been longing to organise an event in that extraordinary barn, and altogether it was a dreamy experience. It was wonderful to see people's faces when they walked in - everyone's spirit was immediately uplifted by the space and its beauty. People who are normally grumpy were charming, people who normally go to bed early stayed up late. The atmosphere was charged with positive energy but everyone was relaxed. There's something about Milden Hall that is very special, indeed you have created something very special. The barn itself has a wonderful effect on people - something about its age, its architecture, the weight of its structure and also maybe the oak itself transforms one's mood, in the same way that an ancient cathedral does. And the informal nature of the whole set up makes people feel easy. Thank you Christopher and Juliet for the most wonderful time.” 🥰

Alizee’s February hen was action-packed with yoga, a cryptic treasure hunt, a Tudor feast and sunset farm walks at 🌅

They also got creative by making gorgeous paper-flowers out of old maps of the bride and her partner's home towns. What a lovely upcycling idea! Mmm…What maps would you use and why? Maybe fun for a marriage proposal, a valentines bunch of flowers, a surprise holiday destination, house-move?

Happy hen Alizee to you and all your chicks 🐥 we loved having you at Milden!

This lovely, enthusiastic group from the Lifelines Project planted 250m of new hedge with shrubs provided by – talking, praying, laughing and bonding with each other and nature. The project aims to connect people and nature by establishing a network of hedgerows and is a wonderful joint initiative between whose aim is to reconnect people’s souls with nature and their purpose of tending to the Earth), (who believe there can be no peace on Earth until people connect with the Earth) and (an Ismaili community group). Thank you lovely Lifelines people - we will coax this hedge along and hope you return to see it grow! And thank you to Raheema for making and putting up a tit box in the Green Wood – effectively turning a 35 year old tree without holes into a 200 year old one with a nest site!

A girls weekend in the Old Brooder in winter…with gorgeous looking food boards, accompanied by some delicious DIY wine-tasting including the lovely, local Pinot Noir Rose, and Bacchus White. 🍷 🍇 🧀 🫒

If you’d rather not DIY, we can organise a Suffolk Wine-Tasting with cheese and charcuterie at different locations on-farm - al fresco lunchtime or sundown outside in the summer or gathered around the woodburner in winter. We can try to accommodate surprises in an ancient wildflower meadow, by a pond or in a wood. And, if it’s for a hen, we offer a Mr & Mrs game too!

🥁 Drumroll for the Greenest Guest Champions of 2022 🥁

We’re delighted to announce Ian Taylor and Lynn Sloman very worthy winners of a free weekend at Milden! Ian and Lynn stayed for five nights in the Tudor barn over Christmas with their party of 21 guests and were Green in Thought, Word and Deed! They…
🚂 Calculated their train and car transport and then worked out the trees required to offset their carbon emissions.
🚶🏻 Minimised car use once here by enjoying in-barn entertainment and farm walking, using our fleet of bikes to explore country lanes.
🥕 Sourced most of their food locally from Lavenham Butchers and Hollow Trees Farm. Baked their own bread using locally sourced flour from Farmer Browns, used seasonal veg, and despite most being carnivores, ate many delicious veggie and vegan meals.
🎁 Minimised plastic with very little packaging on locally sourced goods and had a ‘no present agreement’ as spending time together was their present to each other.
🌽 Reduced food waste by being very organised about what they cooked and needed to cook – and took home leftovers.
♻️ Were diligent in their recycling and composting

Well done Ian and Lynn 👏👏👏

Yesterday was Day 🧑🏼‍🌾👨🏻‍🌾 and today just so happens to be our number 1 farmer’s birthday 🎉

When you buy British produce, which has lower food miles than buying from abroad (better still, when you buy what’s in in season), you're supporting farmers like us who are committed to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 (ideally somewhat sooner!) and making the countryside beautiful and alive with wildlife. But how?
♻️ We recycle old farming equipment
🌳 We’ve planted 40 acres of trees and loads of hedges
🦉 We do everything we can to make sure wildlife thrives in every crevice on the farm

Unfortunately we still need fuel for the tractors and energy-hungry fertiliser to grow food so bring on the innovators!

Come and stay this winter ✨

A new Winter Eco-Tariff for the Tudor Barn in Suffolk - Independent Hostels Guests can opt for our Winter Eco-Tariff from November to January - you can save money and save on CO2 emissions in doing so! For those who are happy to have a jolly gathering in winter with some areas super-warm and a woodburner 24/7, but without having the heating full-on in the massive main barn....

Lavender & old socks…This lavender doesn’t JUST look gorgeous in the summer and feed the bees. This autumn we’ve been harvesting the lavender seeds and recycling odd snazzy (washed 😂) socks left by guests into lavender bags! Our family are very good at wearing odd (laundered!) socks but here’s something to try. Instead of sewing lavender into new bags, simply fill socks two thirds up with sweet-smelling lavender seeds and tie a knot in the top then pop them in the laundry drawers and hey-presto you have cheap and cheerful lavender bags!
