Morning all,
On this day in 1547 Edward VI, aged 9 years old, was crowned at Westminster Abbey. Edward, the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, was the third monarch of the Tudor dynasty and England's first monarch who was raised as a Protestant.
What are your thoughts on little Edward and how the country progressed under Tudor rule
Hi all,
On this day in 1674 England and the Netherlands signed the Treaty of Westminster, ending the Third Anglo-Dutch War. A provision of the agreement transferred the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam to England and it was renamed New York.
What's your thoughts on how this event changed the face of The British Empire and latterly The USA?
Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that History Society will be on tomorrow from five until seven pm in Gateway room four.
Best regards,
Jonathan Lawson
Hi everyone,
Just an announcement that the photography session for the History Society has been booked for quarter to four tomorrow in Gateway room 7.

Hi everyone,
Just a quick reminder to say that the History Society is having its second session tomorrow at 5:00pm until 7:00pm in Gateway room 4.

Hi guys,
Looks like Fresher's Faire has gone incredibly well this year, as we have 37 new members! However, I feel as if it is necessary to resolve a slight confusion before it gets too out of hand. The History Society will be starting properly next Thursday, and running as a weekly event, while the History Lab runs on a monthly basis. I will also update this post with further information about where the History Society is being held.
Best regards,
Jonathan Lawson, President of the History Society and Lab.
Hey everyone,
I know it has been a long time since there was a post on here, however, this was mainly due to the fact that the last Lab was in April.
I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported me for this year. We took a big gamble this year and rather than just run the lab once a month, we decided to join the lab with a society element. It has definitely been tough at times but with the help of the rest of the committee I think it has been a successful year! I hope everyone has enjoyed the labs that have been put on.
I wish next year's committee all the best, good luck guys!
Sincerely,
Rose Blaney
President
Hey Everyone,
I would just like to thank everyone who turned up last night. There was an incredible turn out for the Lab. I personally think that it was one of the best lectures that we have had in the past few years. I would like to extend some thanks on behalf of the rest of the society committe to Professor David, who gave the amazing lecture last night. Also the food was amazing, i would highly recommend Arabesque restaurant here in Sunderland - great service and authentic food, what more could you ask for!
There is no Society get together tonight as the lab was last night but there will be a quiz and games night next Thursday (21st April) at 5pm. Room number to still be confirmed.

APRIL HISTORY LAB TALK!!!!!
This is a big event for us as we have a visiting lecturer from Manchester as we would love it if as many people as possible to turn up.
The Lab will be on Wednesday 13th April (first week back) at 5pm in Priestan building room 118. Our guest lecturer is Professor Rosalie David from Manchester University. The lecture title is "Pharmacy in Ancient Egypt: Recent Researches" and will describe a major Leverhulme Trust-funded project they have pursued, which has looked at the evidence for a science-based pharmaceutical tradition in ancient Egypt.
Everyone who is a member of a Sunderland University Sport or Society - and has a membership card [must have on entry] - is welcome to come along for free. If you are not a member then the Lab will cost £2. Everyone is welcome.
We are also going along to Arabesque, Sunderland's Egyptian restaurant after the lecture at 6pm and then onto the Cooper Rose for drinks afterwards. If you would like to join us at the restaurant could you please comment below so that we can have an idea on numbers before we book closer to the date.
Please spread the word to everyone who may be interested.
Hope to see you there and hope you all have a Happy Easter!!

*** HISTORY LAB TALK - Thursday 25th February - Priestman Building Room 301. 5pm - 7pm ****
Hi everyone,
Right, this Thursdays is the first History Lab talk of the semester, and it's hopefully going to be an interesting and fun one. We have been unable to secure a guest speaker for this talk, so we've come up with an interesting idea, which we hope that members will get involved in. Basically, the history society committee will do the talk, along with any volunteer members who wish to participate.
The Premise:
As many of us are doing Dissertations this year we propose that, in the absence of a guest speaker, that members can give 5 - 10 minute talks (with the aid of a powerpoint if they wish), on the subject of their dissertations. Or, if you arent doing a dissertation, or are not a third year but would like to participate, then you may give a short talk on a subject which is interesting to you.
As many of us are doing completely separate dissertations, and even those who are doing similar will be doing their own work from different points of view, we believe there is absolutely no chance of anyone taking any ideas away from you... in fact, if you're struggling with your idea, it might be a good idea to do a short talk (in an open forum) which members could then offer up some suggestions to assist.
Once again, this is purely voluntary, though we'd love other members to get involved, especially as this is not a pressurised presentation for marks, just for a bit of fun. And from a practical point of view, if any of you are wishing to become teachers in the future, then it never hurts to brush up on your talking skills, especially if you're nervous about speaking in front of others... we'll all give encouragement!!!!
At the very least Rose, Paul and Shaun will give short talks on their dissertation topics, so there will be at least some speakers.
If you're interested in participating then get in touch with us, just so we know what is what.
This is an official society event, so please make sure you have your history memberships - or alternatively, if you're not part of the HS, but you do have a society card and would like to participate or come along then please bring that. Lastly if you're not part of any society, but would like to come along it will cost £2 at the door.
All the best.
The History Society committee.
Merry Christmas Everyone

Good Morning Everyone,
This is just a quick reminder about tonight and a confirmation of all details needed for tonight.

Good Morning Everyone,
TONIGHT - HISTORY SOCIETY NIGHT OUT (29th October) - So the plan is, roughly:
To meet around 7 - 7.30ish in the Cooper Rose for Food and a few drinks.
From there we'll be making a trip around to a number places in the town, most likely Lola's Bar, TTonic and a number of others. Finally around 11 - 12pmish we'll end up in Illusions Club / Bar. (We believe we've managed to secure cheaper drinks in Illusions, and possibly have the luxury of their Private function area, though this is all dependant on the numbers).
*** We have previously stated that this is a fancy dress night out, however fancy dress is most definitely optional ***
Whilst this is a History Society night out we're obviously not stopping people from outside the society joining us, EVERYONE IS WELCOME!!! HOWEVER the agreement we've tried to get from a number of the bars about cheaper drinks will only apply to history society members... Therefore you will potentially have to show your membership card at the bar in order to get the cheaper drinks (details will be confirmed at the Cooper Rose).
Any details that change will be discussed at the Cooper Rose, although there will likely be no more changes, however, we hope that you can all join us as it should be a bloody good night out!!
All the best
History Society Committee

THURSDAY - HISTORY SOCIETY NIGHT OUT (29th October) - At present the plan is, roughly:
There has been a small change of plan, we are now planning to meet around 7 - 7.30ish in the Cooper Rose for Food and a few drinks, this is due to the Lambton Worm already having a large group in attendance.

HOWEVER the agreement we've tried to get from a number of the bars about cheaper drinks will only apply to history society members... Therefore you will potentially have to show your membership card at the bar in order to get the cheaper drinks (but details on this will follow over the course of the next couple days).
We'll confirm all the details tomorrow, although there will likely be no more changes, however, we hope that you can all join us as it should be a bloody good night out!!

SOCIETY PHOTO - Hey everyone, later on today we are booked in to have our photo taken with all the other University societies. If you would like to join us to be part of the photo and represent the History Society then we'd love for you to come along.
We're meeting at City Space for 6pm this afternoon, the photo will be taken about 6.15pm. (we're not going out afterwards specifically because of tomorrows frivolities)
If you'd like to be part of the photo all we ask is that you dress relatively smart (Trousers / Jeans and a decent shirt / T-shirt).
**** Hopefully we'll also have the details worked for tomorrows night out ****
All the best.

Hi Everyone
FRIDAY GATHERING - The Plan is as follows: We'll be meeting in the Priestman building 314 again for HIstory Bingo. 4.30 until 6pm. Then we will have an evening over Roker to see the Illuminations. This is due to a change in the plan for Bowling, unfortunately there are no free lanes until later that night. However if on the night people do fancy bowling or the cinema we are flexible. (Around 9pm the lanes we're free).
We'll make certain plans on friday evening when we can see who turns up. Advice would be to bring a bit money with you for food and potentialy bowling, just in case.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR MEMBERSHIPS FOR FRIDAY, You can obtain from city space gym reception.
All the best
History Society Committee
HI Everyone,
We are posting details of next weeks History Society activity nice and early. We are arranging an historical bingo and bowling night for next Friday, 23rd October. We'll meet in the Priestman Building, most likely room 314 for the history bingo. Following the bingo we'll all have a wander down to the bowling ally outside of the cinema in town. Times and prices to be confirmed (however bowling is not expensive). Snacks will be provided during the bingo, but we aren't planning on having meal a afterwards. The bowling does light food (chips / dorritos etc), but if you wish to have food beforehand then by all means bring your own foods to the history bingo. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PAID YOUR MEMBERSHIP PLEASE, its important that you have done so before Friday. Membership can be obtained from the reception in city space outside of the gym - £10 for the full year, and this money goes towards funding from the uni for us to be able to plan more things.
Please can you like this post or comment so we can gage interest for Friday.
All the best
History Society Committee
Hi Everyone,
First, I would just like to apologise, as since the previous message was posted (30 minutes ago) some problems have occurred. Due to this we are no longer going to be having a meal at Louie Louie's and are instead going to the Cooper Rose, for 5pm, we have not booked a table but will more than likely be upstairs. Hopefully everyone is okay with this and it does not cause any problems. We are still going to be having a film night at St Peter's Campus in the Cinema Room within the Media Centre from 7-9pm.
Please don't forget, to attend the movie night you need to have a membership card.
Hope to see you all tonight.
Rose Blaney
History Society President
Hi Everyone,
Today (15th October) we are having our first history film night, before hand though we are going for a meal. It has been unanimously decided that are going to Louie Louie's for the meal. Louie Louie's is a world buffet. Paul and Rose will be waiting outside the Bridges (next to Café Nero) from 4:40pm for anyone who does not know where Louie Louie's is. We will stay there until 4:50pm and then leave, if you do know where Louie Louie's is, please wait outside for us.
After the meal we will then walk towards St Peters to go to the Cinema Room to watch the film. We have the room booked from 7-9pm, if you do not want to come to the meal this is where you need to meet us.
Please don't forget, to attend the movie night you need to have a membership card.
Hope to see you all tonight.
History Society Committee
Hi Everyone,
This week the History Society is having a Historical Film Night on Thursday 15th October. Due to some scheduling difficulties we have only been able to book the St Peter's Campus Cinema Room from 7-9pm, so unfortunately we only have time to watch one film. However, we would Society would like to invite you all to a meal at Louie Louie's Buffet at 5pm where we can have food, chat and a bit of fun before going over to St Peter's for the film.
If you would like to go somewhere else for food, please don't hesitate to leave a comment, we are always open to suggestions.
Don't forget you need to have a membership card to attend the film night - for this week only you do not need a membership card to attend the meal beforehand. If you do not know where Louie Louie's is please let us know so that we can provide a meeting point to make sure everyone interested knows where to go.
Hope to see you on Thursday!
History Society Committee
We had a great night last Thursday, a big thanks to Duncan for the lecture (and Sarah for helping with the demonstration). Pictures to come. This week we are hoping to have a Historical Movie Night, we are currently just waiting on room confirmation at the moment, but we will post more information once we have it.
Most importantly, we would like to remind everyone that starting from this week you need a society membership card to be able to attend any society activity. It is only £10 for the entire year and that helps towards costs for guest lectures, travel if we go on a trip, as well as a few other things. You can pay your membership at the gym reception upstairs in City Space. If, however, you do not want to be a society member and would rather just attend the Lab then Lab membership is £8 for the year or £2 per lecture if you would rather just pay for a specific lecture that interests you.
Hope to see you all this week.
History Society Committee
Hello everyone! This Thursday (the 8th of October) is the University of Sunderland's first History lab. This week's lab will be delivered by Duncan McNulty and will be a unique take on English society in the Victorian era. The lecture will deal with how violence effected Victorian society, specifically focusing on 'The serial killer', 'the feminist radical' and the 'eccentric pugilist' the lab will discuss how these elements, combined with the fist mass media effected English society. Duncan also practices a form of Victorian martial art called 'Bartitsu', and will be giving a demonstration of some of the moves following the lecture.
The Lab will be in the Gateway room 5, and will take place between 5pm and 7pm and is for all to enter. You do not have to be a member of the History Society to come along; feel free to bring friends. Following the lab we will be going to Fitzgerald's pub where you can have a more informal chat with other members and Duncan himself. After this we will be going for food in Marcello's (an Italian restaurant)
We hope to see you all there on Thursday: it'll be a great way to start the year with a unique lecture and a chance to see some martial arts live.
Regards,
UOS History Society.
