As a statement from Assemble explains, ‘This series celebrates the work we were able to create at Sugarhouse Studios, with the space for mess and noise; space which is becoming increasingly challenging to afford and access in the city. It has allowed us to work with many artisans and artists; experimenting, prototyping and working together.’

Pictured is a pot of micro-algae which Assemble used to stain panels for the new workspace for the Luma Atelier in Arles (2019 – ongoing)
As Harry Johnson from Assemble explained, the micro-algae "is abundant in La Camargue region in the south of France, and this is combined with a linseed oil to create this paint, which when exposed to light turns this really lovely blue."

A close up first drawing in Maggi Hambling’s 6am sequence: ‘A Tibetan terrier with tasselling black and white fur, Lux was – in life – a kind of animate ink drawing in black and white; in memoriam, she coalesces into a curling, crouching presence – transposed from the mind’s eye onto the page’

"It is imperative I start with a very precise drawing on the panel of wood on which I work. A drawing which takes time but is eventually disregarded, although I aways take a tracing. Then I spend time mixing the colours which I imagine are the colours I will need but again may bear no relation to the end, or even half way, result. These processes are crucial, ritualistic and slightly strange given that I know they will be discarded. It's like fitting my feet into footprints I have already made while still having no idea where they will lead." —
