Dear all,

Random pic of PAUL MOSLEY to catch your attention. He is performing tonight with Jack Harris - Singer/Songwriter and Elaine Palmer.

The guys won’t mind me saying that ticket sales haven’t been great.

It’s fine (😣) except we REALLY don’t want you to miss out. We know Paul & Jack well. They are up there with some of the most outstanding artists we have ever put on. Paul is alt folk, sometimes prog, sometimes concept & sometimes contemporary singersongwriter. He has scored puppet theatre music and he wrote a folk opera called The Butcher. He is also a brilliant, captivating frontman ♥️

Jack Harris is folk and blues and masterful!!! He has been featured in The Guardian. Anais Mitchell described him as “a priest of song”. He was the first non-American to win a prestigious American New Folk award in Texas. He is hilarious on stage too.

We haven’t seen Elaine yet but we KNOW she will be incredible because the guys have invited her.

PLEASE don’t miss this. They BOTH should be household names, which is a tragic loss for British popular culture, but great for you because you can see them for just £12, in an intimate setting and it will be an evening you won’t forget! Come and join us. Keiron and I will be there taking in every moment 🩷

Thanks,
Hannah x

Tickets are on sale now for The Velveteen Orkestra who make a triumphant return to The Sound Lounge on Friday November 1st.

The Velveteen Orkestra are modern day romantics, combining essences of European folk and Americana with nodding acquaintances to Neil Young, Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Radiohead. Live, they are a force of nature, led by enigmatic frontman Dan Shears with his gilt-edged voice, spindle-limbed frame and sparkling sense of humour, evoking memories of Jeff Buckley at his heart-aching best.

Mishkin Fitzgerald and the Chemical Perils shall open for The Velveteen Orkestra. Mishkin Fitzgerald is best known for her role as lead singer and pianist in the British ‘orchestral punk-rock’ band, Birdeatsbaby. Solo she plays darkly tinged pianos ballads and weird alt-pop tunes. Influenced heavily by classical piano music, and alternative artists such as Nick Cave, Patti Smith and Regina Spektor, Mishkin’s sound is distinctive, fragile and unapologetic.

Three new, talented singer-songwriters, Tabby Barbera, Kyle Chatham and OMAM DAWN join us at The Sound Lounge on Thursday October 3rd (Doors, 7pm) for a spectacular new artist showcase.

Tabby Barbera is crafting her own take on alternative dream rock. Inspired by the eclectic, she infuses Scooby-Doo-inspired ballads with introspective lyrics and heavy guitar riffs. Tabby's unconventional style invites audiences to join her on a journey of sonic exploration and heartfelt lyricism.

Kyle Chatham is a Scottish singer-songwriter whose ethereal dark folk floats in space with no plan to return. Combining elements of bedroom pop and shoegaze with alt-rock and ambient soundscapes, Kyle creates timeless and sincere music with tranquil melodies and sombre yet profound lyrics.

Omam Dawn is a psych-folk singer songwriter from the UK's south coast. Her songs invite listeners into dreamscapes of fishermen, dolphins and purple fields. She has been played on BBC Introducing and is currently listed as one of five best acts to see live by London music venue, Morocco Bound. This year marks the release of her debut album, 'Near from Goose Town', which circles and dips in and out from the magical and the earthly, the heartfelt and the raw.

Tabby, Kyle and Omam have united with The Sound Lounge to make this showcase an free ticket event where audience members will be invited to donate to artists on the night.

Following on from their spectacular sold out show at The Sound Lounge in 2023, Motel Sundown return to The Sound Lounge on Friday October 18th for a big night with special guest support artist, The Gleeman.

Motel Sundown are really making waves on the UK Americana scene. Singer-songwriters Naomi Campbell, Karen Turley and Robert Johnson are capturing the hearts and minds of a growing army of fans who have fallen in love with their exquisite lyrics, rich, earthy harmonies and their engaging live performances. Their debut album 'If You Were Listening' was released in 2022 and they are currently touring in support of their brand new EP 'El Dorado'.

The Gleeman (real name Dean Morris) was writing songs from his late teens. It was only when his children had grown up and his mother’s, then father’s descent into dementia propelled him to finally pursue his musical passion in his late 40s. His debut album 'Something To Say' is released on Sept. 27th. The Gleeman recently supported Starsailor, Miles Hunt (The Wonder Stuff) and Damien Dempsey.

The future looks amazing for both Motel Sundown and The Gleeman and we expect both to be playing large venues in the future. Be one of those who can say they were there when they played this great little venue in Sutton!

Project Adorno join us at The Sound Lounge on Thursday September 19th with their new show 'Q***r Pop'.

'Q***r Pop' explores gender fluidity, the confusion of non-conformity, and the snap and crackle of popular culture as an 80's child comes of age and discovers their true identity. Witty, playful and poignant lyrics are set to an electro-pop soundtrack in this multimedia show brought to you by Project Adorno.

Project Adorno are seasoned performers on the fringe cabaret scene with appearances at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Buxton Fringe, Cheltenham Literature Festival and Latitude Festival among others. Their songs and poems feature a range of subjects from old computer games, and love affairs with Daleks to celebrations of Jeremy Paxman and the smell of second-hand books. Often chaotic, their performances generally leave audiences with smiles on their faces!

Also featuring Drunk Keith! combining perverse pop and amusing narratives and Sunset People blending electronic & analogue synths – the perfect soundtrack to lost reels of Super-8 footage.

Doors, 7pm.

Project Adorno and the Sound Lounge have teamed up to make this a special show. Grab a ticket here or simply turn up on the night. You will be able to donate to artists on the night by cash or card. Please speak to a member of the Sound Lounge team and they will show you how to donate.

Just had a spot EHO visit and it’s 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Phew 🤣 these things are always a little bit scary!

31/08/2024

Just a little note to say there is an article circulating
in the Sutton Guardian about The Sound Lounge and the Elm Grove development - which we have stumbled upon as it’s being shared everywhere.

We would like to make it clear that we had no idea about this article, we have not been approached by anyone at the Sutton Guardian and this has not come from us.

We ARE in a difficult situation with the development, however we understand that Sutton Council are under financial pressure and also need to build homes. It is a really difficult situation to try and balance and we want to work WITH the council, to come up with a solution.

It’s pretty poor, but totally expected, that the Sutton Guardian completely ignored us when we approached them about putting something out about Folk In The Park, us being the first carbon neutral music venue in the UK & our crowdfunder - but they put something like this out without so much as an email to us. This does not feel anything like journalism to us.

Anyway, regarding the Elm Grove development, the plans are going to committee on 4th September. We know that the sound lounge isn’t the only thing to consider. There are 300 homes too. You can log your views on the plans via the council website - although there have been difficulties logging comments so you may need to email them and cc. Councillors to ensure your views are captured.

There are still some tickets available for Soft Machine, one of the undisputed giants of the progressive jazz rock scene who play The Sound Lounge on Friday November 29th.

Soft Machine were the touchstone of the 1960's Canterbury scene that included Caravan, Gong, Matching Mole and Hatfield & The North, and launched the careers of Robert Wyatt, Daevid Allen and Kevin Ayres. They gained a reputation for top-flight musicianship, compelling (if sometimes difficult) compositions filled with key dynamic and tempo changes and their experimental and avant-garde leanings, a reputation that found them being taken on by Jimi Hendrix's management team and jettisoned into numerous tours of the US supporting the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

In the decades following their formation, Soft Machine continued to evolve their sound...and their band members, with British free-jazz saxophone legend Elton Dean, bassist Hugh Hopper and Andy Summers who went on to forge a career as drummer in The Police all passing through.

The current line-up (John Etheridge, Theo Travis, Fred Baker and Asaf Sirkis) continues to defy categorization. Their latest album, 'Other Doors', sees them move seamlessly between hardcore improvisation, pop-tinged ebullience, muscular rock, and visceral jazz along with shimmering electronica and ambient overtones. Its release in 2023 is the end of an era as the last studio session with legend John Marshall, who joined the group in 1972 and sadly died in 2023 at the age of 82.This now leaves John Etheridge, who joined the group in 1975, as the last surviving member of the group with roots in Soft Machine’s 1970s heyday.

We are so excited that Soft Machine are coming to play here. It's going to be a very special Sound Lounge night and we are sure that it will be a show that will remain in the memory for many years. Don't miss out! Grab your tickets now!

In an absolutely spectacular singer-songwriter triple bill, PAUL MOSLEY will be joined by Elaine Palmer and Jack Harris - Singer/Songwriter on September 14th, right here at the Sound Lounge in the beating heart of Sutton!

Paul Mosley is a multi award winning singer songwriter and composer. Known for his excellent story songs and between song banter. His folk opera 'The Butcher' was a highlight of the Sound Lounge's previous home at Tooting. He has released seven albums and has graced stages at Glastonbury and Green Man Festivals. He has worked with an Icelandic Farmers' Choir and a Danish Puppet Theatre and has toured with just about everyone including Shane MacGowan and Jane Siberry.

Elaine Palmer hails from an isolated village up on the North Yorkshire Moors in England but spent most of her life travelling back and forward to her family in Phoenix, Arizona. Growing up in an old Watermill in the wilds of Yorkshire Elaine surrounded herself by music, writing songs influenced by her surroundings and music both in the UK and USA. Elaine finely honed her distinctive voice and built a reputation for her emotive mesmerizing stage presence. Elaine has released a handful of records and toured the UK extensively, playing with the likes of KT Tunstall, Patty Griffin, Courtney Marie Andrews and Paolo Nutini.

The Welsh singer-songwriter Jack Harris ("a natural songwriting talent” - The Telegraph) combines beautifully delicate and observational songs with a wicked sense of humour that make his shows an absolute delight. He's performed at several Sound Lounge venues over the years and also played at our inaugural Folk In The Park festival in 2021. To hear for yourself, check out Jack's wonderful albums including 2012's The Flame and the Pelican and 2018's The Wide Afternoon ("powerful and poetic" - The Guardian) and you'll know why the eminent American songwriter Anaïs Mitchell calls him "a priest of song who holds himself to an ancient, rigorous code of beauty most of us have forgotten exists."

We have just finished our last summer with the amazing (we are so lucky to have them) Time Out Youth Project.

30 children who, when they first came, mostly didn’t even want to juice their fresh produce we put out. Today they made their very own pizzas and were topping them with green peppers, fresh tomatoes, onions and even olives.

Special thanks to our team of staff & volunteers who worked so hard this morning. A lovely way to start our working week ☀️
