There has been so many examples of seeing people work in retail and hospitality that would be amazing Support Workers. I'm thinking, You are wasted working in this shop/cafe or wherever it is!!
I'd love to approach these people and spend time with them explaining the benefits or working as a support worker.
People seem to be terrified of working in care but I can promise you it is so rewarding!
Of course it has its challenges and we are fully aware of this! We spend the time with our support staff and we help develop our team. We have a solid structure in place for people to avoid overwhelming the team and applying unnecessary stress.
The proof is in the Care Unity pudding! 50% of our care and support team never worked in Care before they joined us and have all passed their probation with flying colours!

I will forever be proud of the team we have at Care Unity and I want to give a shout out to Robert Pratt who joined the team back in February this year.

Robert settled in really well at Care Unity considering he has no care experience. I asked Robert to write a little something based on his time at Care Unity which I wanted to share.

Caring is not for me, I’ve been a printer, a postman, courier driver, meter reader even did a stint with Amazon. In all my 45 years of working life I’ve never once contemplated working as a care worker.
It’s not something I think I could do. Definitely not for me. These are all things I’ve said and meant in the past. As a volunteer with the scout movement for over 50 years I’ve learnt a lot of skills that have helped me and hundreds of Young People get on in life, many skills that can be transferred to everyday life.
Being unemployed is a horrible thing for anyone, but being over 60 and unemployed is unthinkable, a friend told me about a job vacancy so I thought I’d try. Not my cup of tea but hey a job is a job. I went for the interview and immediately my outlook changed, my whole life took on a whole new chapter.
But I’ve never done care before, we will teach you, we are always on hand to help you, the job is yours thank you and welcome aboard.
That was back in Feb 2024, I began like most people in a new job/career very tentatively extremely nervous but soon started to get the hang of what I was supposed to do. Now I say to myself why didn’t I start this earlier in life.
Helping people get on with their lives that without help they couldn’t manage to do even the simplest of tasks, knowing the small things i am doing like dishing out medication or putting a meal In front of someone or even just talking to them for 10-15 minutes is making a huge difference to their quality of life.
I was scared stiff coming into care, working alone is not a problem because I know there is always somebody to help within the team ready with the answer to any problems that arise during the day.
I look forward to going to work everyday as each day is different. As a carer/support worker I know I’m making a huge difference to people’s lives which makes them happy and when they are happy I know I’ve done a good job and that makes me happy.
In some ways we all care for someone even if it’s just ourselves, Caring is not for everybody but it sure as hell is for me.

Due to the very low number of care and support workers, there are many people living in the community without care. Being new to the care sector can be nerve racking but I truly believe that if you are a caring, driven and motivated person with a good attitude along with our training and support, you can be an amazing help to the supported people and can actually change their life!

To date we have received fantastic feedback from our supported people and their families which is vital.
