The prototype featured a battery pack in the trunk and an electric motor in the engine bay that powered the rear wheels. However, due to the limitations of battery technology at the time, such as limited range and long charging times the vehicle was not pursued for mass production.

This experiment was an early indication of Mercedes-Benz's interest in electric propulsion, which would eventually lead to the development of more advanced electric vehicles in later decades

This 230E is just as clean underneath as she is on top!

Mercedes-Benz W123 230 series launched in 1976- it initially featured a 2.3-liter carbureted engine, known for its simplicity.

In the early 1980s, the 230E was introduced with a fuel-injected engine. “E” stands for “Einspritzung,” the German word for injection. This upgrade brought better performance, fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions.

The 230E is one of the better options for driving around town due to its lack of thirst for petrol compared with its bigger brother the 280E.

Carbureted versions are now very hard to come by due to the lesser rust proofing in early production cars. Additionally the scarcity of engine parts for carbureted model, makes the fuel-injected 230E a safer bet!

What are your thoughts on MBs choice of wording and brand identity here compared to the Mercedes Benz we know today?

It’s as simple as 123. The phrase ‘less is more’ is optimised by the oh so simple W123 Mercedes Benz. A car that was truly designed with longevity in mind.

Now we fast forward 50 years (since the first W123 prototypes were released) to a throw away society. Where cars are turned into cubes before the words ‘new ECU’ are to be spoken.

The thought of a car lasting 40 years is a far cry nowadays. But maybe, just maybe one day this cycle will return and things will be built to last. We as enthusiasts must keep these vehicles on our roads and cherish build quality.

A show of hands…who has paid the MB Museum a visit in Stuttgart Germany?

Something a little different for you to feast your eyes upon. We have recently carried out a cosmetic engine bay restoration of a now wonderful W113 280SL.

Inner bays refinished in signal red complimented by many replated and refinished components sure does make a sweet outcome. ⭐️

Remember this one? A new lease of life brought to this M110 Engine bay.

Did someone say spring cleaning? Some much needed care and attention being given to this 280CE engine bay. Steam cleaner used to remove build up of grime and oil.
