The Maharajah

Hello everyone

As many of you will by now know I have sadly had to close the Maharajah after almost 30 years trading in such a wonderful place that Purton is.

This closure is a result of a series of perfect storms; Brexit, COVID 19 Lockdown and now the energy and food cost escalation due to the conflict in Ukraine.

After Brexit I continued to trade as a restaurant despite staffing challenges. COVID 19 and Lockdown drove the contraction of the business to a ‘Take-away’ business model but I really did miss the reduced interaction with you all as you ordered food and drinks. Now the final straw was and is the high and ongoing rising cost of energy and food.

The business was not sustainable any longer.

I would like to thank the customers over nearly 30 years for patronising the Maharajah. I have loved every minute. Many of you have become close friends and I was cheered by your comments expressing sadness and disappointment at the demise of the restaurant whilst still commending the food.

I have and will continue to miss the Christian Aid curry evenings and the ‘Tea Parties’ held in aid of Purton Age Concern and the Orphanage in Udaipur India. Truly generous amounts of money have been raised over the years using the restaurant building as the venue for these events, largely orchestrated by others, I enjoyed giving my full support at these events.

Purtonians are amazing people and you have extended your friendship to me and my family over the years. I live in the village and plan to continue to do so. My children went to school here, so in many ways I see myself as an ‘apprentice’ Purtonian and seek to move beyond that as time marches on.

We don’t know what the future will bring but I hope that you will realise your dreams and I thank you all once again for being my friend.

Update from The Maharajah Purton:

High street is closed at the moment (11th November 2021 at 17:45) due to Road work.

I was not aware that they were going to close the road tonight.

Planned date for this work to be carried out was supposed to be 15th November 2021.
