Join us at STEAM Museum for the ultimate WW2 educational experience!⁠
We'll Meet Again, is an immersive wartime experience for schools, taking place in February 2025!
⁠
STEAM is transformed to recreate the era of the Second World War. Where All staff dress in period costume and teachers and pupils are also encouraged to arrive dressed 1940s style to add to the wartime atmosphere. You could even bring a rationed lunch!⁠
⁠
You will take part in activities such as: object handling, authentic costume from World War Two for the children to enjoy and try on throughout the day, as well as a meticulously researched reconstruction of a public Air Raid Shelter and an Evacuation Carriage.⁠

All of the experiences are delivered in different styles and planned to provide a range of diverse learning opportunities, including role-play, simulation, storytelling, dressing up, speaking, listening and questioning, empathy, observation, imagination and reflection.⁠

🕛️We have many clocks on display at STEAM!🕰️
Originating from railway offices, workshops and stations from across the GWR network and Swindon Works.
Most of the clocks are wound and maintained by our volunteer Peter who is an experienced horologist. The end of British Summer Time, when the clocks go back one hour, means that Peter has to turn all of the clocks in the museum back one hour. For some of the clocks it is not as simple as turning the hands back, buts involves stopping the clocks for one hour and then setting them going again and adjusting them to the correct time.

This week’s takes a step into a more modern celebration of Ancient Wessex.

We’re highlighting a fascinating 1920s GWR (Great Western Railway) publicity guide from STEAM’s collection, titled ‘From Cave Man to Roman in Britain.’ This guide explores the rich prehistoric remains found along the Great Western Network, particularly across the South West of England. The artwork was created by Edward J. Burrow (1869–1935), a prolific illustrator and travel guide publisher.

In November 2024, Wessex Museums will launch a major touring exhibition, Un/Common People: Folk Culture in Wessex. This exhibition celebrates the vibrant folk art and seasonal customs of Wessex, both past and present. 🌿

It redefines the traditional meaning of ‘commoner’ by showcasing the extraordinary creativity of folk art, crafted by self-taught artists and makers.

The exhibition features over 100 remarkable objects from , , and private lenders. Alongside the objects, you’ll find a newly commissioned folk song and story map, films, and photography that capture the region’s folk calendar.

Discover how Wessex’s folk traditions have been embraced, reimagined, and enriched over time, blending traditional crafts with modern customisations.
