This is how you celebrate and pay tribute to a friend who died from breast cancer 💚

Some of you will know that our founder, Kate, sadly lost one of her very best friends last year to breast cancer. Lisa was just 51 years old and a mum of two.

When Kate got chatting with Giovanna Fletcher at an awards ceremony a few months ago and the conversation turned to Lisa, Giovanna suggested Kate join her upcoming trek in the Brecon Beacons to raise money for the brilliant CoppaFeel! charity.

So that's just what she did!

Next week, Kate will be trekking 100km over 5 days with Giovanna and a host of other celebrity trek captains: Amy Dowden, Harry Judd, Candice Brown and Faye Winter.

We know Kate will smash it and raise lots of money for CoppaFeel and lots of awareness about breast cancer. If you have been affected by breast cancer and would like to donate to Kate's Trek for CoppaFeel, you can do so at the link in the comments.

At times we could all do with a bit of TLC, and this workshop is dedicated to boosting your little cook’s mood and helping them feel fantastic inside and out.

From playgrounds to classrooms, childhood asthma affects daily life for many children in the UK.

As well as the obvious impact on a child’s physical health, asthma can also have a significant impact on children's emotional well-being, academic performance, and social interactions.

Asthma is a very common long-term lung condition, it affects around 1 in 11 children in the UK, so if your child has asthma, you are very much not alone but we know from speaking with parents that there can often be a feeling of stigma when it comes to asthma so it’s important that we talk about it, about the causes and symptoms and importantly about management of symptoms to minimise the limitations placed on children.

And that’s why we were so delighted to chat with Dr Greg Burch for this week’s Family Health Podcast. Greg is an A&E doctor and also CEO and founder of Digital Health Passport which supports the NHS and charities with digital solutions to help people manage long-term conditions at home.

We also chat with Ambreen, whose young daughter lives with asthma, about her symptoms, treatment and the impact this has on her life.

Asthma is so common that it’s really important that we all have an understanding of what it is like for our friends and family living with this condition, and how we can best look out for them. A brilliant episode, not to be missed!

Most parents are blissfully unaware of febrile seizures until it happens to their child. This is what happened to TOWIE star Billie Shepherd's daughter Margot recently and it prompted her to brush up on her first aid knowledge by taking a class with our lovely trainer Frankie Mini First Aid South Essex

Around one in twenty children will have a febrile seizure at some point so it's important to know what they are, why they happen and what you need to do to help your child.

You will not be alone. At least one-third of British people admit to experiencing at least one episode of sunburn every year.

The sun is often strong enough in the UK to damage skin, even if it is cold or cloudy. UV radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer.

Tomorrow’s NEW episode of the Family Health Podcast focuses on skin cancer with a conversation with Adele, a mum of two who received a devastating diagnosis of skin cancer on Christmas Eve 2020. Her daughters were just 6 and 7 years old. Please make some time to listen to Adele’s story this week.

Very sadly, whooping cough has been back the news this week with the devastating headline that an increase in cases has led to the deaths of five babies in England this year.

Whooping cough cases continue to rise and health experts are urging those not vaccinated to come forward to get the jab, particularly babies and young children, and pregnant women.

Behind the scenes, the Mini First Aid team across the UK have been completing a full 12 hours of CPR to raise funds for our amazing director Kate Ball. Kate will be completing an extraordinary 100KM hike across the Brecon Beacons with Giovanna Fletcher in June. The women are raising awareness and funding to support the CoppaFeel Charity, whom Kristin Hallenga funded. RIP Kris 🙏

Over 60% of parents who attend a Mini First Aid class tell us that choking is their number one first aid concern.

When your baby starts weaning and moving onto solid foods, choking becomes a real fear.

The advice about what to do if your child is choking depends on the age of your child. Back slaps, chest thrusts, and abdominal thrusts are all things that we demonstrate in our baby & child first aid classes. You get demonstrations and practical, hands-on experience trying these techniques on life-size manikins which we know is the very best way to learn and remember.

We can't always prevent an incident like choking but learning life-saving skills gives us the confidence to remain calm and do all that we can if an emergency situation arises.

Today we share Brody’s story, kindly told with permission from his Mum, Natasha. Just last week Brody developed sepsis from a chickenpox infection and almost lost his life.

This story thankfully has a happy ending for Brody and his family but it’s a reminder to trust your parental instincts and always ask "Could it be sepsis?"

Here is what happened in Natasha’s words:

Up until this week, I thought having the •chicken pox• wasn’t that bad - a few days of itchiness, a bit of a temperature and all will be well. w r o n g 🚩

This week has been the most scared I’ve felt in a long long time and sitting here now typing this out it’s only just hit me how close we were to losing our baby.

Brody got chicken pox on Saturday, all was ‘fine’ until he took a serious dip. His temperature spiked at 41.5 and his breathing was rapid. After numerous phone calls to the GP + NHS111 we were told it was ‘just a bad case of chicken pox’ and ‘it’s normal’

A few days passed and he was only getting worse. He was hardly waking. I took him into the hospital, handed over my lifeless baby and begged them to take me seriously, to help us.

After a few hours Brody was being treated for sepsis. His ‘bad case of chicken pox’ attacked his body and made its way into his blood stream.

I dread to think what would have happened if I listened to the numerous health professionals telling me I was over-reacting and he was ‘fine’.

Chicken pox isn’t something mild and fun. It isn’t something to wish your child to contract, it isn’t something to hold parties over. We were one of the very lucky ones, and I thank the stars above but can people p l e a s e start taking chicken pox seriously!!

It can and does kill.”

💚 Thank you Natasha for sharing Brody’s story as a warning to parents to be vigilant with infections like chicken pox. Brody spent almost a week in hospital but thankfully responded to treatment and is doing well now.

Please persevere with medics if you feel your child is deteriorating or if something just isn’t right and take a look at the resources at Sepsis Trust for more info on the signs and symptoms of sepsis.
