⚫️ SIA DOOR SUPERVISOR AND SECURITY OFFICER TOP UP/REFRESHER TRAINING ⚫️
The SIA has announced that new Refresher qualifications for Door Supervisors and Security Officers will be available from 1 October 2024.
From 1 April 2025, these Refresher qualifications will be mandatory for all current SIA Door Supervisor and Security Officer licence holders each time they need to renew their licences.
The term ‘Refresher’ is used to distinguish this from the existing ‘Top-Up’ training, as they are separate qualifications.
⚫️The ‘Top-Up’ Qualification – Who Requires it:
The Top-Up qualification is intended for individuals who completed their original Door Supervisor or Security Officer qualifications prior to April 2021.
⚫️The ‘Refresher’ Qualification – Who Requires It:
The Refresher qualification is for individuals who completed their original training after April 2021 or who have already undertaken a Top-Up qualification and need to renew their licence on or after 1 April 2025.
⚫️Renewing Within the Transition Phase:
Individuals who completed their Top-Up qualification or original training on or after April 2021 and have a licence expiring between now and April 2025 are not required to complete the new Refresher training for licence renewal, as this requirement comes into effect from 1 April 2025.
⚫️Renewing early to avoid the ‘Refresher’ Requirement::
The SIA permits licence renewal up to four months in advance of expiry without any loss of time on the current licence.
This enables individuals who hold a Top-Up qualification or completed their original training after April 2021, and whose licences expire from now until the end of July 2025, to avoid the need for Refresher training, provided their renewal application is submitted before 1 April 2025.
⚫️Renewing Early or Within the Transition Phase:
It is expected that you maintain your First Aid qualification and stay current with Counter Terrorism Training by annually completing the ACT Counter Terror Modules (i.e., ACT Awareness and ACT Security).
You should also keep your physical intervention skills up-to-date in preparation for possible court situations.
This can be achieved by reviewing the manual for the physical intervention skills and knowledge provided by your training provider during your Top-Up, and by attending any refresher training offered by your employer.
⚫️For Those with Expired Old-Style Qualifications or SIA Licences:
Individuals who obtained their Door Supervisor or Security Officer qualifications prior to April 2021, who have not yet undertaken a Top-Up qualification, or who hold an expired licence within the past three years, must be registered on a Top-Up course by 1st October 2024.
Those who miss this deadline will need to start afresh with a full course.
Therefore, do not delay risk having to start again from the beginning.
⚫️Summary:
If you obtained a Door Supervisor or Security Officer qualification after April 2021 you will need to do a refresher course if you are renewing after April 2025.
If you obtained a Door Supervisor or Security Officer qualification before April 2021 and have done a Top Up course since you will need to do a refresher course if you are renewing after April 2025.
If you obtained a Door Supervisor or Security Officer qualification before April 2021 and have not done a Top Up course since you will need to do one before 1st October 2024 otherwise you will need to re-do the entire course again.
If you have done a Top Up course and are due to renew your licence between 1st October 2024 and 1st April 2025 you won’t need to do any courses until you renew after 1st April 2025.

From Tuesday 1 April 2025, door supervisors and security guards must undertake refresher training to renew their licence.
The new refresher qualifications will be available from 1 October 2024 and will update key safety-critical skills door supervisors and security guards use to keep the public safe.
If they hold a door supervisor licence they can choose one of the following options:
• take the door supervisor refresher training and renew their door supervisor licence
• take the security guard refresher training and switch to a security guard licence
In either case, they must have an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification, or equivalent, before they can take the refresher training.
In April 2021 the SIA raised the standards for licence-linked qualifications for Door Supervisors (DS) and Security Guards (SG). Accredited ‘top-up’ awards were introduced for DS and SG in October 2021.
By October 2024, all existing DS and SG licence holders will be qualified to the same standard. The refresher training will ensure that operatives have safety-critical skills that are up to date.
