In another first for Musgrove Park, the hospital has become the first in the south west to offer a new state-of-the-art treatment – this time, for patients with an enlarged prostate.
An enlarged prostate is a very common problem in patients over 50, and usually involves a more invasive treatment.
The new, innovative surgical procedure being used by our colleagues at Musgrove is called Rezum, a very simple procedure, which takes less than 20 minutes in total. Overall, it’s more comfortable and has a quicker recovery time – so much better for our patients!
Our thanks must go to the hospital’s League of Friends for funding the machine. The feedback from our patients treated so far has been very positive, and it’s great to be able to offer this minimally invasive option through the NHS 💙
If you want to hear about how Rezum works in more detail, one of our consultant urologists explains it all, here: https://bit.ly/40OUlkp
Did you know, it’s not just Musgrove Park and Yeovil hospitals that can perform surgery? For the last 20 years, our theatres at Minehead Hospital have been used to carry out lots of different types of day surgery.
From orthopaedic wrist and hand operations, to podiatric surgery for feet and ankles, the wonderful team at Minehead have been offering day case surgeries to help care for patients closer to their homes.
The team has recently been given a new laminar airflow system – a system that takes small bacteria particles out of the air, reducing the chance of infection – which gives them more scope to perform more complex surgeries. So now, even more patients will get the opportunity to be cared for in their local hospital!
Thank you to the hospital’s League of Friends for this donation 💙

GENEROUS DONATION FROM TAYLOR WIMPEY
The dementia and delirium team at Musgrove are delighted to be equipped with their bright yellow ‘tool kits’, courtesy of a generous donation to the League of Friends by housing developers, Taylor Wimpey.
Packed with dementia friendly activities and assessment aids, theses tool kits will enable Becky Furze, the dementia nurse specialist and the Dementia and Delirium Team support workers, Covi Garcia, Emily Hitchens and Amy Baldwin to be able to attend referrals from the wards without delay thus speeding up the process of assessment and diagnosis.
The team were thrilled with the bags and thanked Taylor Wimpey for this much appreciated resource that will make such a difference to their work.
At any one time, the team have between 40 and 50 referrals on their list. In September, over a four week period, Musgrove took part in a national audit of dementia looking at all admissions over the age of 55. Of the 1470 patients admitted to Musgrove, 169 had dementia, either diagnosed or undiagnosed.
We are starting our ward trolley service again soon after a two year break due to Covid, it will be selling items from the Shop (sweets, toiletries, magazines etc).
We are looking for volunteers to help us, 🤩 the trolley service will be on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 2pm if you can help please call Tina on 01823 342394 or email her on [email protected].
RIP Queen Elizabeth II 🇬🇧
Following a lunch held at Taunton Racecourse at the end of June, Carol Waterman-Smith, on behalf of the League of Friends was delighted to receive a cheque for £2000 from Peter Renshaw, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Taunton. Peter Renshaw is the outgoing President of the Rotary Club of Taunton.
This generous donation deserves particular recognition because of the link between the two organisations as it was the Rotary Club of Taunton that formed the League of Friends in March 1959. The donation will go towards funding the League's donations to the hospital agreed for this year.
League of Friends gives £500,000 to Musgrove Park

Platinum Skies donation
The Platinum Skies development near the Library in Taunton has chosen the League of Friends as one of its two local charities to support this year. They have kindly donated £500 to buy dementia friendly games and activities. We hope to have a photo opportunity soon to show their generous gifts in use on the wards.
GET SET, BAKE!
We have been really touched by a gesture from a group of bakers in the six Polden villages (Ashcott, Burtle, Catcott, Chilton Polden, Edington and Shapwick) who are going to bring cakes into the Shop every Thursday for sixteen weeks which Jackie will then arrange to deliver to four departments and wards each week, starting on the 25 November. It is their thank you to the staff at Musgrove for the care they will give to patients during the challenging winter to come. An amazing gesture which is going to be so much appreciated by staff. Thank you bakers! 🍰🧁
Musgrove Park’s Bracken birthing centre declared officially open
The League of Friends at Musgrove Park joined with hospitals midwives on Friday 5 November to declare the new Bracken Birthing Centre officially open.
During the COVID-19 pandemic the centre underwent a £300k upgrade, funded by the League of Friends, to give parents-to-be in Taunton and Somerset access to modern, state-of-the-art birthing facilities.
It was thanks to a unique Toad Trail fundraising campaign run by the hospital’s League of Friends in the summer of 2019 that captured the imagination of people in Taunton and the surrounding area.
The Toad Trail raised £50,000 with a further £250,000 coming from legacy donations left to the League of Friends for the benefit of patients.
