Meaning and Purpose are central to both Spirituality and Psychotherapy. They keep people mentally and emotionally healthy. Health is not just the absence of symptoms, indeed the word health is related to ‘whole’ and ‘holy’ and in Old English becomes ‘hale’.
Forty years ago Spirituality and Psychotherapy were poles apart, yet today the Royal College of Psychiatrists says, “Spirituality and psychiatry … do not seem to have much in common. But we are becoming increasingly aware of ways in which some aspects of spirituality can offer real benefits for mental health.” Indeed currently 70% of US medical schools now feature courses on the spirituality of health. There are significant new perspectives here, and while some views are controversial, it suggests we may be in a paradigm shift. TAP accordingly decided that in having a conference on this subject, delegates would have an opportunity to appreciate these new developments and positively integrate them into their practice.
8:45: Registration and coffee
9.15: Introduction by Co-Chair of TAP – Sara Olof
9.30: Melody Cranbourne Rosser on Spiritual competence and psychotherapeutic practice: necessity or nonsense?
What does it mean to be a ‘spiritually competent’ practitioner, is there a need for this, and is it a realistic expectation? Does introducing spirituality into the therapeutic process hinder, harm, or cross professional boundaries? What happens if spirituality is not included? Should practitioners be required to explore spirituality from a personal perspective prior to working with clients? Does spirituality have a shadow and how might this manifest? Is spirituality different from other protected characteristics? How might spiritual competence be measured and how might we know we have reached the required level?
11.00: Coffee
11:30: Melody Cranbourne Rosser
During this session participants will be invited to identify and explore questions such as these in order to consider the potential benefits, caveats and challenges they might face as they hold a space for spirituality within their psychotherapeutic practice.
12:45: Lunch
14.00: Larry Culliford on The Psychology of Spirituality: Part 1: Theory
In this session Larry Culliford will focus on personal development in the stages towards spiritual maturity, illustrated by human stories, concentrating on the transition process between stages, and how – as therapists – we can and do help people grow.
15.15: Tea
15.45: Larry Culliford on The Psychology of Spirituality: Part 2: Practice
This session will be an interactive workshop, with a sharing of stories and with some attention being paid to the role of disciplined spiritual practices (not necessarily religious) in fostering emotional healing and personal growth.

I just wanted to draw to the attention of any visitors to my page, a really good article on Domestic Abuse. I am sure a lot of you have been following the story line in The Archers, or indeed might be actually in a Domestic Abuse situation and looking for a way out of it via Counselling/Psychotherapy.
If this is the case, please feel free to contact me, and do please read the article......

The Archers domestic abuse is classic ‘gaslighting’ – very real, little understood | Jay Watts Questioning a partner’s sanity and memory is a common tactic in an abusive relationship, but the symptoms are tragically easy to overlook
I belong to a Peer Group..... recently we wrote an introduction to other members of 10pbg (10 Parishes Business Group).
We would like to introduce ourselves to other members of 10pbg. We are a group of six femaleTherapists, we met at one of the first 10pbg evening Talks, and decided it would be a good idea to form ourselves into a Peer Group. We meet bi-monthly, at each meeting one of us gives a Talk about some apect of our work. We discuss business ideas, professional development, and ways of promoting our Businesses. We plan to promote ourselves more widely this year, we are producing “Therapists` Advice” articles for the Wivey Messenger, the first one being on the subject of SAD syndrome, then Colds and Flu, and thirdly Insomnia. We are advertising jointly, Milverton Parish Magazine and Wivey Messenger so far. We are also hoping to participate in more local events.
We are all available, to just chat through any problems or health issues you may have, give Talks, or to book individual appointments. Our contact details can be found below.

INSOMNIA – How psychotherapeutic techniques can help.
Helena Trump – Counsellor & Psychotherapist writes:- I recently seem to have had a plethora of Clients, all with insomnia !! Insomnia, or the inability to sleep, “wakefulness”, as I like to call it, affects
one in every three people in the UK. It can be occasional episodes, or for some people it can last months, even years. Wakefulness can take a serious toll on your quality of life, affecting moods, work and relationships.
How much sleep do we need ? – it is thought on average, a normal adult needs 7-9 hours, older adults less. For me, when a person does not stay asleep long enough to awake feeling totally refreshed in the morning, then it really is a problem, and time to tackle that problem.
Initially it is not always clear what triggers insomnia. It is often associated with stress, anxiety, trauma, lifestyle factors or mental health conditions such as depression. I have found that Clients who experience Insomnia, often have a tendency to internalise their feelings. Counselling can help you to deal with, and so avoid, the thoughts and behaviours affecting your sleep patterns, steering you towards full expression of your feelings, which often will result in multifarious long term health and life benefits.
To book a free 20 mintue appointment with Helena to discuss your “wakefulness”, just call the Terrace on 01823 338968, or the Wiveliscomber Clinic 01984 624409.
A big thank you to everyone who has liked my page.....incredible !!
An apology...for the Group name via Facebook, Counseling & Mental Health. We spell it with a double L = Counselling.
It grates on my English spelling head every time I see it, but there seems no way to change it ??!!
I agree....
