Kings Arms Oxford
The iconic Kings Arms, the oldest pub in Oxford. Expect fine cask ale, hearty food & warm welcome.
The famous Kings Arms is the oldest pub in Oxford, built in 1607 and still standing in its original position. We're quite possibly also the brainiest pub in Oxford too, known for having the highest IQ per square foot of anywhere in the world! Loved by Oxford scholars and tourists alike, renown for fine cask ales, hearty homemade food and our resident ghost.
Heading to town for the fair? Why not join us for a drink, a bite to eat and break!
How long has St Giles Fair been in existence? Have a look at our timeline to see how the fair has changed over time:
🍗1625: St Giles Fair begins as a parish festival for St Giles Feast, honouring the patron saint of beggars and the disabled.
🐻1750s: St Giles Fair becomes a toys fair, selling a variety of cheap and useful goods, primarily to the working class.
🎪Early 1800s: The fair becomes more similar to how it is today, as a general children’s fair with exciting stalls and rides for children to enjoy.
🍻1830s: Amusement for adults is introduced, with lots of drinking and dancing. It starts to be seen as a holiday by the working class, and some people want it shut down for being disorderly and loud.
🎠1840s: mechanical rides are introduced.
📰1930: The Oxford City Council takes over the running and organisation of the fair
🎭1950s: Tommy Jacobsen, sometimes known as ‘Tommy Twinkletoes’, joins London Palladiums travelling Variety show, and performs many places including St Giles Fair. He was born without arms and was a talented and popular entertainer and musician.
🎢Present day: Today, St Giles Fair is hugely popular, with a range of rides and food, and is enjoyed by people of a variety of ages.
This photograph is part of our current special photo exhibition, ‘A Way of Life’: The People Behind St Giles Fair, exploring stories, culture and heritage generously shared with us by showmen and women. The Museum of Oxford is open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm, Pay What You Can entry.
Thank you to the Oxfordshire History Centre for giving us kind permission to share these amazing photos.
