Torbay Stone Conservation
I have over 15 years experience in the stonemasonry industry. Ranging from natural stone walling, lime mortar repointing, conservation, restoration.
Stone and masonry cleaning, patios, driveways, new build.
Boundary wall repair carried out for a private client in Brixham.
Waterwheel pit repair carried out a for a private client at Town Mills in Torrington.
During this project we carried out a partial rebuild to the arch and spandrels with some localised dismantling and reinstatement to remove the vegetation and a full repoint was carried out to the facade of the arch.
Thanks to Simon John Lofthouse for the recommendation.
Torbay Stone and conservation have secured works to the grade II listed River Dart Academy school, Dartington. Works to include repointing of open and defective joints to the parapet copins, inspections to determine the stability of all copins and pinnacles, removal of the plastic paint to the bath stone window surrounds, mortar repairs to the tracery windows.
Removal of the internal lime plaster due to hygroscopic salts crystallising and blowing the plaster.
All to be put back in lime putty plaster.
Carbon removal to a linhay stone fireplace for a private client in Ashburton.
Bath Stone mullion replacements, indents, mortar repairs, pinning, repointing of open and defective joints and sheltercoating carried out for a private client in Exmouth.
Another great review. This time from the client from The Round House.
We used Torbay Stone Conservation as part of a renovation project in 2023. The job included repointing, underpinning, replacing window lintels and replacing rotten wood from underneath a large internal beam. Aaron and his team were with us for a number of months and were always hard-working and professional. Aaron is obviously passionate and knowledgeable about stonemasonry. He is very conscientious about doing a good job and following all health and safety procedures, which is vital when undertaking structural work. We always knew where we were with the project in terms of budget and timescales and the site was always left clean and tidy. We are delighted with the final results and would thoroughly recommend Torbay Stone Conservation.

The Old Rectory Cullompton. The carbon deposits are being pulled out of the stone utilising a carbon removing poultice. After this the hearth and internal jambs and lintel are being replaced with a black half bulldozing slate finish.
New project started. The Round House, Stoke Gabriel.
The roof has been pushing on the lounge walls. Along with the walls currently unsupported so underpinning will be carried out. Target Structural have tied the facade together with a helical bar beam system. The whole facade both inside and out will be repointed to disguise the repairs.
The roadside elevation has suffered from a lack of maintenance allowing the weather to make its way in over the years. The downpipe has failed over time washing out the mortar. So down to be down to be dismantled and reconstructed. Oak lintels are down to be changed, arches to be pinned, mortar repairs to be carried out underpinning to the rear elevation above ground level and to be clad with the local limestone. Along with iron fixings to be removed. Total repointing 150 square meters. Duration of works 10 weeks. Biggest job to date!
Little repair carried out for a private client in Ashburton. The top get hinge had rusted and expended to twice its original size lifting the wall. Along with vegetation pushing the top of the wall out causing the arch to drop. Preventative maintenance can eliminate most problems with stone structures before they start. Buddleja seen in the last photo can cause substantial damage to the structure with the root system being able to pe*****te up to 5ft down in to the wall. Cement is often overlooked as a product for repointing old stone structures. The same approach should be taken as though repointing were to be carried out on a facade of a historic building. Particularly walls because they are more exposed to adverse weather trapping moisture in the wall rotting the lime mortar down because the wall cannot breathe.
The top of the chimney to Eglarooze Farm restored. With slate capping and drainage channels cut into the slate.

This is prime example for property owners, investors or companies looking for tradespeople for their projects. It's imperative you check their work and references, ensure they have they have the correct insurances, qualifications and can manage the project. Even If you need to speak to former clients to confirm the references, and quality of workmanship. In this case the client was told that the property required repointing. The mortar is absoloute fine, nothing wrong with it. They have pointed (I mean rendered over the top). The only place on the property that requires repointing is the south facing gable because of weathering. Now with the cost of removing this monstrosity, repointing the top half of the south facing elevation, localised stone replacements and cleaning where the stone has been smeared. Including the cost to carry out the work compliently this is now going to cost the owner of the property an additional £3,000. The guy who did this work quoted him £500. This is not to say all cheap prices are bad, just to do your homework before hiring.
