Now is the time to summer prune for a fantastic display next spring - a really simple task. Cut back the long shoots made this summer to about 30cm / 12 inches. Simple. This encourages the plant's energy to go into the remaining little buds to turn them into fat flower buds for flowering next spring. Then around February give another trim and shorten those shoots back to about 3 buds. Job done.
Alstroemerias, Peruvian lilies are now in stock with their dazzling exotic-looking flowers. They make a dramatic statement in a hot themed border, and also look wonderful when potted up for the patio. Plant more than you need though as the flowers are one of the best for cutting, so you will want some for the vase.
Are you planning to get out & give your grass a good cut?
Lawns don't like intense heat we have been experiencing, especially after a dry spell. Raise the blades of your mower a notch or two to leave the lawn tidy and encourage recovery.
