Vida Nutrition
Hi, I'm Maria Barkway Rodrigues.
I work with people recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes who need a personalised nutrition and lifestyle programme to improve their blood sugar control.
Hi all! I've been a little quiet but I'm back :-) Check out my new blog post on fasting: https://vidanutrition.co.uk/the-truth-about-fasting/
For a while now I've been doing long overnight fasts and it really works for me but everyone is different. Have you tried it?
After half-term and a lovely long Jubilee weekend I feel socially exhausted and BBQed out!
It's important to take time out to re-energise yourself after a hectic period. For me, this is done with books, cups of rooibos tea and lots of broccoli (yes, I am very rock and roll).
What about you? Quiet evenings in? Mediation? Gardening?
Tell me!
We are half way through Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week.
Why is this important?
Because there are currently 13.6 million people in the UK at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is one of those conditions that affects every single organ in your body. It can affect your eyesight, feet, heart, kidneys, nerves etc. Not only that but it also increases the risk for certain cancers and Alzheimer's.
How do you know if you are at risk? If you are overweight especially around the middle, if you have a diet high in refined carbohydrates, if you struggle with sugar cravings and energy, it may be that your blood sugar regulation is not working as it should.

I think of juice as a Trojan horse for sugar.
Many people think that juice is made out of fruit, and fruit is healthy, so juice is automatically healthy right?
Sadly that’s not the case. Juices normally have the fruits’ natural fibre removed or destroyed. And fibre is what slows down sugar absorption so without it you’re drinking fruit flavoured sugar water.
And that’s fine sometimes! But not all the time and not if you genuinely think this is a healthy choice.
The photo below shows a little carton of apple juice that a child would easily have with a snack or meal (or in our case after some nasty tasting antibiotics!)
It has over 5 teaspoons of sugar in it. 😱
Toothbrush at the ready! 🪥
Sometimes we prioritise everyone and everything but ourselves.
After you’ve run around all day and kids are asleep it’s too easy to turn to mindless comfort food in front of the TV.
But, and this may be a revolutionary thought, why don’t we treat ourselves to nourishing and beautiful food? Put on some music and cook something healthy. Example below - pan fried salmon with cherry tomatoes, basil and olives.
The Mediterranean obsession continues!
Pssst...! Looking for a quick and easy lunch recipe that's also healthy? Check out the new Mediterranean frittatta recipe on my website here: https://vidanutrition.co.uk/mediterranean-frittatta/
Fact or fiction?
Honey is better for you than sugar
How many of you take supplements? The majority of people I know either take them or think they should take them but get a bit overwhelmed by the number of options, brands, etc. It's a huge business right now - read about this on my latest blog here: https://bit.ly/3sgykuQ
Energy seekers, assemble!
Who wouldn't want to have more energy?! When you're trying to manage work, children, pets, social life, etc it is easy to rely on caffeine, sugary foods or even alcohol. Sadly that doesn't help you in the long run.
Have a look at my new blog post to find healthier ways to boost your energy! https://bit.ly/3KA6LDa
Stress.
I think everyone I know feels stressed. Either because of work, children, work/life balance, relationships, health/body issues, family worries or a combination of all of the above. Sometimes we are able to deal with these feelings mindfully. Sometimes we are not.
The problem when we experience stress day in, day out for a sustained period of time is that we develop chronic stress. And this takes a toll on your body. It becomes harder for your body to regulate blood sugar levels, to lose weight and to have restful sleep, to name just a few things.
Last week I visited a lovely reflexologist for the first time in a while. I needed to take time out and invest in my well-being. It was a one hour session. I fell asleep and dreamt for about half of it. I needed it!
What will you do this week to keep those stress levels under control?
In a Game of Thrones reversal, 'Summer is coming!'
It's time to get out of our cosy winter cocoons, to feel excited about spending time outdoors, to wear lighter clothes and to feel good in our own skin.
If this thought worries you then let's look at why this is.
What is it in your current diet and/or lifestyle that is holding you back? What changes, big or small, could you make that would help you feel more energetic, more confident, more you?
I am holding two virtual clinic open afternoons on Tuesday 3 and Thursday 5 May. I'd love to understand how you feel, what health goals you'd like to achieve, what's proving a challenge and how I can help.
There are absolutely no strings and no obligations. You may decide to work with me now, at a later date, or never. And that's fine.
If you have been meaning to invest in yourself and your health, now is the time to do it!
I've only got 6 spaces, book yours here: https://p.bttr.to/3KW5lDH
In Portugal for the Easter holidays and enjoying fresh seafood for lunch… did you know that clams are packed with vitamin B12, iron, selenium and many more nutrients?! If you cook them the “bolhão pato” way, in olive oil and garlic with fresh lemon and coriander, it is honestly one of the best things you’ll ever eat…
Now. Can someone tell me what type of seafood is behind the clams?!
The sun is out! I feel I am finally out of hibernation ☀️
I'm loving the weather, people's smiles, the feeling of heat on my skin and of leaving behind endless weeks of grey weather (I hope!).
Whilst I know that many people are looking forward to more sunny days and switching to their summer wardrobe, I'm also aware that for some this is not a comforting thought.
I've met lots of people that feel uncomfortable in their own body and would prefer to hide away.
Let me help with that! Book in a free review call to talk what's going on for you and how I can support: https://bit.ly/3ICtf5n
How do you reward yourself?
Your know... after a hard day/week at work? After an intense day with the kids? After a long week of constantly trying to balance work, kids, partner and being your own person?
For some, it is with alcohol. For others, it is with processed food.
Only a few people take the time to really question what it is that they NEED. Most often it won't be the alcohol, the sugar or the trans fats.
It could be connection. A conversation with a friend. An hour reading a good book. Or some time spent on your favourite hobby.
Have a read of my recent blog post on rewards here: https://bit.ly/3MCjyal
And then tell me how you will reward yourself (outside of food and drink) this weekend!
Did you know that chronic kidney disease is a VERY common long-term complication of diabetes?
In some cases it can even lead to dialysis and even a kidney transplant.
Today is World Kidney Day - an annual campaign to raise awareness of kidneys health. As the daughter of a nephrologist (kidney doctor) I've been warned from an early age to protect my kidneys!
If you are worried about your weight and your blood sugar levels, do get tested. The sooner you start to address these health issues the better it will be for your long-term health!
Hi all!
I really want to know more about you so I understand how best to support. So I need your help.
I'm interested in how you feel about your weight, food cravings and energy levels. Could you complete this 2min survey: https://bit.ly/3vbEE9c
Thank you!
Breakfast - the only meal of the day where most people are happy to have the same thing every day! I'm not sure why that is but it may have something to do with how busy we all are in the mornings and how we prioritise convenience over health.
Check out my new blog post for 3 breakfast ideas to start the day with a highly nutritious meal: https://bit.ly/34MI6MR
We love bread... the first thing people ask when it's suggested that they cut down on bread is "What will I have for lunch??"
Fear not! As part of Real Bread Week I thought I'd share a healthy bread recipe which means you won't have to worry about carb guilt: https://bit.ly/3habMGh
Happy bread making!
Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day!
Everyone around us is currently struggling with something. It could be physical health, mental health, relationships, finances, etc.
We might not know what is going on but we can still make someone's life a little bit better by just being kind. Offer a smile, a genuine compliment, or help where you can. The power of human connection is amazing!
Happy National Pizza day!
Granted, pizza is not necessarily known as a healthy food but, with just a few adjustments, it can be pre-diabetic friendly! Try making a crust from eggs and shredded mozzarella and topping it with loads of veg. Here's an idea: https://bit.ly/3HGvwwv

Snacking - the good, the bad and the ugly!
As some of you know I'm not a massive fan of snacking, as this usually involves highly processed and sugary food.
But there is another way... Check out my new blog post and get 15 ideas for healthy snacks! How many will you have this week? https://bit.ly/34i8Vbh
Current (although possibly unusual) bedtime reading - brilliant book!
