To wrap up Men’s Health Week, we wanted to share some self-help Sunday tips to help you look after your mental health.
In our busy lives it can be difficult to find the time to prioritise our mind health, but it's important to chat to someone if something’s been worrying you. Maybe this weekend is a good time to open up?
Here are some ways to make the conversation easier:
Find a situation you're relaxed in and consider chatting whilst doing something else. 💬
Speak to someone you are comfortable with, perhaps in a one-on-one setting. 🤗
Pick a quiet time when neither of you have to rush to something else. 🤫
Split your chat into a series of mini chats so it's less overwhelming. ⏳
And if you struggle the first time, try again another day.

🎥 Join us for Men's Health Week as Eugene Farrell, our Mental Health Lead, sheds light on why men often struggle to ask for help!
Eugene shares valuable tips on how this can change:
1️⃣ Normalise help-seeking: Let's foster a culture where seeking support is seen as a sign of strength rather than weakness. By sharing our own experiences, we encourage others to do the same.
2️⃣ Foster empathy and understanding: Let's cultivate an environment where men feel safe to express their emotions without judgment. Empathy plays a vital role in building connections and breaking down barriers.
3️⃣ Challenge traditional masculinity norms: It's time to redefine what it means to be a man. By embracing vulnerability, we pave the way for healthier emotional well-being.
4️⃣ Educate and raise awareness: By spreading knowledge about men's mental health challenges, we empower individuals to recognise the signs and seek help early on.
By fostering an environment of compassion and understanding, we can create space for men to open up, and access the resources that can make a significant difference in their well-being.
Let's work together to break down the walls that hinder men from seeking help and promote a culture of support and understanding ✨🙌
How to support your kids during exam season?
Full details below 👇👇👇
Leave the door open 🚪
Let you child know you are there for them if they need help or support at any time
Talk about what’s coming up and the exam schedule
Talk about revision timetable
Show them how much you love them and care about them
Know the signs 🚦
Keep an eye out for signs of stress
Angry or irritable
Avoidance
Procrastination
Not eating/sleeping
Loss of interest
Not concentrating
Check in ✅
Its important to check in and see that your child is OK, but don’t make it too often as this can be overbearing
When you check in look, listen, gut!
look and see how they appear
Listen to them, use active listening to reflect you heard them and recognise what they say and feel
If your gut tells you something isn’t right, it’s probably correct
Have some professional support options ready, school, helplines, online, let them choose or help them
Self-care 💅🏼
Encourage self-care
Nutrition and hydration is important
Healthy eating is good but a treat can work wonders too
Have in the house things they like to eat or drink
Taking breaks is important, chat with friends, exercise, family
Good sleep is an essential part of revision
What works works 📔
They will probably know what schedule and revision methods works best for them
Don’t impose your views on how best to approach revision and exams
Ready Steady 🏁
Encourage them to be ready for the exam
Help them to try out pens and pencils and go shopping with them to get more than one
Pack bag day before
Encourage them to get a good sleep before an exam
Help them understand they can’t control everything like exam questions but can control being ready and prepared
Move it on ⏩
After an exam ask how it went
They may need support around expectations or perfectionism
Students usually do better than they immediately think
Its ok to dissect the exam if that works for them
Consider agreeing a period of worry time and move on afterwards
A treat or reward afterwards can help to boost them
Help them understand they need to move on to next exam, don’t let a bad day overshadow everything else
What can you try today to feel good? How about fermented foods! 🙌
These are foods that are preserved in a way that boosts both the nutritional value and the shelf-life of the food. 🍶🥫
Happily, the microbes that preserve the food and kill bacteria have also been shown to do us good in lots of different ways. 😎
Fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir contain healthy bacteria. 🦠
These microbes are responsible for creating various chemicals and compounds that interact with the brain or aid digestive processes which, in turn, can impact our emotions and mood. 🧠👅☺
Some of these foods might be familiar, but some you might not have tasted yet – so why not try one today and see if you like it? 🍽

What can you do today to feel good?
Did you know that kindness is contagious? So both the giver and receiver benefit from the effects of a small gesture. It's a win-win! 👌🏼🙌🏼👏🏼
And it doesn't need to be grand, just a smile will do.
When we do something kind we get a release of the happy hormones serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine. It improves our wellbeing and mood, and it counters stress – which is great for our health. 📈
But we also need to make an effort to be kind to ourselves, as we can be our own biggest critic sometimes. 🙄
If we can accept that we all make mistakes sometimes, we can move on to a kinder and better state of mind. 🥰
Say hello to Team Mum! 👋
Follow the journey of these five busy mums who want to juggle family life with finding time for themselves so they can get more active.
They'll tour the AXA Melwood Training Centre and try walking football for the first time. AXA are the Official Training Partner's of Liverpool FC and now the Official Training Partner of Mums.
Follow AXA UK and stay tuned to see how they get on.
The AXA Global Mind Health Study 2024 shines a light on the added stress and anxiety felt by managers. 💡
Over the last 12 months 1 in 3 managers have been off work due to their mental health and they are twice as likely to do so than non-managers*.
Managers often face intense pressure to meet targets and wider responsibilities that extend their working hours. ⏱
It can be tricky to plan necessary breaks or share their difficulties with senior leadership – until it’s too late. 📖
As well as that managers are responsible for helping their team members cope with their own mind health, which can be a stressful experience in itself without the relevant training. 🤯
The report shows the opportunity for providing strong managerial support to avoid the need to take time off; and enable managers to flourish.😁😃

What can you try today to feel good? 😁
How about adding selenium-rich foods to your diet?
Selenium has been shown to reduce feelings of negative mood and depression*. ✅
We also know that when we feel good we can more easily form healthy habits – so it’s a win-win. 🥰
Good food sources of selenium include Brazil nuts, meat, fish and eggs. Just two Brazil nuts a day will give you your recommended reference nutrient intake of selenium. 🥜
Walnuts and Brazil nuts also provide potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and vitamin E. They are also high energy foods - so if you’re counting calories, they can shoot the numbers – but you don’t need many!

Self-help Sunday: What can you do now to help yourself sleep?
Try using a journal to note down things that are worrying you or any issues, thoughts or responsibilities that are keeping you awake at night. 🌃
By writing them down, you’re effectively taking those worries out of your head and transferring them to a physical, tangible list. 📔
When written down, things seem more manageable and organised, ready to be tackled in the warm light of day. 🌞
In turn, this then allows your brain to switch off.

What can you do right now to feel good? Speed it up! ⏩
When you’re trying to find a feelgood activity to raise your mood and feel great, you may overlook the humble walk. 🚶🏼♀️🚶🏼♂️
But don’t underestimate the benefits that getting out in the fresh air can have for your health and overall wellbeing. Even better, if you can raise your heartbeat just a little the health benefits rise too. ♥
Try walking at ‘race pace’ to get your heart rate going. All you need is a pair of supportive, comfortable shoes and you’re good to go! 👟👟
To do this, start walking and increase your pace every 30 seconds… ⌚
…until you’re just about to break into a jog - this is your maximum walking pace! 🏃🏼♀️
A short walk like this counts as part of the 150 minutes of moderate cardiovascular activity that the NHS recommend across a week.
So, it’s a feelgood and healthy win! 🏅

Our AXA Global Mind Health Study 2024 highlights the opportunity for employers to influence their employee’s mind health in a really positive and effective way.…🥰
Employees who’ve encountered a difficult situation in the past 12 months and are satisfied with their company’s help are more than five times as likely to have flourishing mind health compared to those who were not satisfied with their company’s help*. 🙌🏼
Our supplementary One Poll research of 2,000 workers found that when comparing themselves with others around them it’s more common to compare work-life balance (27 per cent) than earnings (22 per cent)**. 🗳
So more mind health support at work definitely directly results in more flourishing employees. Something that benefits everyone. ✔
The AXA Mind Health Study 2024 is a crucial call to action, urging us all to recognise and support mental health in our workplace.

Here are some ways to talk to the teenager in your life 🥰❣
Try to remember, we all need some extra help when there are big things we can’t deal with ourselves - while we might be okay with resolving some smaller things on our own.
It can help to talk about the issue as if it were another person – you could try asking “How would you feel if you were someone else?”
Reassure and normalise the situation - young people need to know their thoughts are perfectly natural and everyone else goes through similar situations.
Try using open questions to allow space for discussion and exploring feelings. Some great questions include:
“How are you feeling?”
“Describe how that felt...”
“How are things with you?”
“What was the best part of your day?”
And always make sure they know you’re always there to talk… 💬
