Have you been thinking about getting fit in 2024?

🏋️I am a Personal Trainer based in Thanet, specialising in weight training. Alongside my classes and small groups I offer tailored focussed one to one sessions to help women and men get the they need whether it be tailored to improving a particular sport or fitness hobby, working on postural analysis, improving technique on lifting or general fitness. I have a client that competes in sailing, a client who competes at Olympic level athletics, a client who is focussed on improving their calisthenics for pole fitness, clients that are hobby runners, clients with Medical conditions like AS, PCOS, RA, Depression, back pain, neck pain, knee pain, plantar fasciitis, clients that are post-mastectomy, and clients that just love training because it makes them feel happy and energised.

I also have regular supervision with a Sports & Spine Injury professional SSi - The Spine & Sports Injury Clinic for those whose needs are more complex so that I can offer the very best guidance to my clients.

Build a genuine connection with exercise be that doing three weekly laps of your local park or swinging a kettlebell in your living room and it will become a commitment you can’t wait to keep. Research shows that positive emotions like fun and enjoyment are key to maintaining an exercise routine long-term which sounds too obvious to state - so why then do so many people dread doing exercise - I suspect it’s because they’ve not found something they actually enjoy!

In my classes and when teaching 1:1, humour is a big part of that time. I don’t do drill sergeant, I don’t shout or bully, I work hard to build a rapport with my clients that involves laughter. If people can laugh they are more likely to remember their session was fun rather than a long hard slog, and even when the workout is hard, they leave smiling!

So, Christmas is done - January has begun!
What are your hopes for Week One?

I am going back to basics to:
1. Re-establish a proper wake and sleep routine
2. Drink loads of water
3. Hit 7-10k steps daily
4. Eat better
5. Exit hermit mode to rejoin community!

What are your thoughts about leaving Christmas mode? And are you looking forward for to getting back some focus? I know I am.

Remember …. Keep it simple, don’t let yourself get overwhelmed and continue tagging on good habits throughout January. Little by little you will achieve whatever it is you want.

As we approach the end of 2023, I can reflect very positively on my year and appreciate the changes I made a year ago that have made such a difference to my headspace, my sense of achievement and my productivity. This is what I take into 2024 with a few little tweaks here and there. Here are some words to ponder on that kind of make you want to to achieve….

Yoda-“Do or do not. There is no try”!

Me-“when you think you can’t, finish it with a lap of honour that says “and there’s more where that bloody came from””.

💡🚦Habit stacking is a productivity and behavior change technique where you integrate a new behavior into an existing routine. It involves identifying habits you already do consistently and adding new activities after them. This way, the established habits act as triggers for the new ones, making it easier to incorporate positive changes into your daily life. For instance, if you always brew coffee in the morning, you can stack a new habit like stretching immediately after. It's a practical way to build a series of small, positive habits over time. The key of course is to stagger the new changes so that over the course of 4-8 weeks you are implementing changes so subtly that it doesn’t feel like an overhaul.

This, I found really helpful last January! And I actually stuck at it for the whole year … I can honestly say 2023 has been my most productive year to date!! 📆

The shoulder press is a fantastic exercise to sculpt those deltoids and build upper body strength. Whether you're using dumbbells, a barbell or kettlebells, proper form is key. Keep the core engaged, press overhead, and control the descent.

I love building up the shoulders because it not only gives fabulous upper body definition and the illusion of a smaller waist, the physical act of lifting overhead makes you feel pretty strong and empowered!

How often have you told yourself that you CAN’T; that you won’t be able to lift that, or complete that many reps, or run that far? Well it is precisely in that headspace that your perseverance shows you how much you CAN achieve if you just keep going, another minute, another mile, another rep, set or KG. You could go all out and manage to keep that up for a time but eventually you’ll burn out! My key to success is to prioritize consistency over intensity. Establishing a regular workout routine, even if it's moderate, can yield better long-term results than sporadic intense sessions. It's all about building sustainable habits. Working out to extremes cannot be sustained.

🎄Making time for exercise during Christmas is crucial for maintaining physical and mental well-being. The holiday season often means we eat more than we ordinarily would along with more sweet treats so making time to get your sweat on is essential for your overall health.

Exercise also serves as an stress-reliever 😩 and mood enhancer - let’s face it - the holidays bring buckets of stress for some and low mood for others - so exercise is a great way to show yourself some self-care. Ultimately, integrating exercise into your Christmas routine contributes to a healthier and more enjoyable holiday season. 😘

I love that feeling after a workout - how does it make YOU feel? I am reminded of so many vitally important benefits of exercise when I workout myself or when I am talking reflectively with a client about ENERGY. As my client said to me this morning, “it seems completely counter-intuitive that when you feel tired that’s often when you most need to exercise”. Tiredness can be a bu**er of a response to so many triggers, and it isn’t always what it seems. Sometimes it isn’t really tiredness that we feel but decision fatigue - constantly being the one at home or work that has to resolve issues or make decisions can make you feel really bloody tired BUT often if we workout intuitively we realise it was actually our mind/body asking for some time out of being in charge and managing situations. As the saying suggests: “A change is as good as a rest”, and in this case, giving yourself a different challenge can be the rest it needs to sustain itself and bounce back!!

How do we push through if we are hardwired to stop when it gets tough? We acknowledge that our body’s signals are to protect self - we learn not to fear the challenge - we grit our teeth and push - this is how we progress and adapt.
