Building your Resilience
There is a lot of emphasis on Mental Ill health and rightly so. If you have ever had one of those dark nights of the soul when a wave of negativity grips you then you know what I mean.
One way of making those events less frequent and severe is to develop mental fitness and look to their cause.
We go to the gym to develop muscles and stamina so that we can cope with challenges on the sports field and in business.
So why not develop mental resilience around life's challenges, such as relationships, redundancies, illness etc.
Sometimes small changes in the direction of our thinking can make all the difference. Here are a couple that I have personally found useful to recover my state and sense of optimism. Its not easy but worth it.
- Focus on what you would rather have rather than what you don't want.
Its so easy to get sucked into negative feelings and want to get rid of them. Unfortunately that doesn't work, like a cork that has been pushed down in water that cork eventually pops right back up.
Its much better to set our minds on what we want instead, e.g. to be calm or resilient, and take steps towards creating that instead.
- The other things is lower our expectations around other people. When we have expectations that are unmet this can cause upset, feelings of vulnerability and more.
Instead learn to be more self sufficient and establish a balance between doing things yourself as well as asking for help. Being too much towards one end of that dynamic can cause frustration, beating yourself up, disappointment.
Anyway that's just two ideas around managing your state and being in tip top mental health.

GET STARTED!
Listen to that inner voice. It's all too easy to get lost in the "WHAT IFs" and the images and feelings of how difficult things are going to be if we step outside of our comfort zone. And before you know it you are pick up your pension and the options are shrinking.
Listen to that inner voice to take a chance, do something different.... make that step out of your comfort zone. And here's the thing it doesn't have to be a big step. Just anything to get the ball rolling.
Who knows where that ball will roll to once it is started. Freedom comes with breaking our inertia.
Yes some people will burn their bridges and take a massive leap of faith and struggle until things make sense. Others (like me) take more demure steps, dipping our toes in the water first and slowly taking the plunge into something different..... others get shoved into the unknown by life events ( redundancies, illness etc.).
The main thing is to do something different to waken up and access the potential we have within us.
So take up a new hobby, go on a trip, join a club of like minded people... even go crazy and add the milk to your tea first (or vice versa). Feel your neurological network start waking up and taking notice. And before you know it you have a new expanded ordinary.

Take a rest and let go of the stress
Have you ever found yourself confiding to a barber or a hairdresser?
In many ways they are the informal therapist in our communities. A 15 minute short back and sides can make you feel good as well as feel listened to. Whether its about a holiday, family, worries , concerns or just some banter, a good laugh.
While you relax and talk, the barber works their magic. The occasional question to fuel the conversation or a head massage as they rub in some hair product. Human contact that can make all the difference and break any isolation.
So don't under estimate the visit to the barber or hairdresser. Treat yourself. You are worth it!

There's always HOPE to be found! A π
HOPE - Unhelpful thoughts and emotions DO pass
There must be something in the air, as I've been reminded, by various sources, that whilst difficult situations and thoughts and emotions feel terrible and overwhelming they do pass.
So having that bit of knowledge, like the one so beautifully expressed by Maya Angelou, can give hope and can make all the difference.
Without it there is the feeling that negativity, unhelpful thoughts and emotions will go on forever.
Just like good thoughts pass so do unhelpful ones. Its a helpful thought to know that.
And it also helpful to know that whilst negativity feels rubbish, there is a positive intention behind it, whether that is to keep us safe in some way or some other motivation. It's just that the negative element of the behaviour has outlived its usefulness.
To help the negativity to move on we need to upgrade it to a new thought or emotion that maintains the positive intention but without the unwanted side effects.
For example: being unkind to ourselves may stop us from taking action that we perceive as risky, there is however the side effect that we stay stuck and the thoughts are unpleasant. A more comfortable thought would be to look at the endeavour as an adventure an opportunity to learn and even if there are negative consequence we will recover and be wiser and more resilient for it.
So negative thoughts do pass and that process can be accelerated by thinking something even better than the original thought.

Life is busy and full of concerns. We try and navigate a complex matrix of demands , concerns, expectations that we forget to take time out.
So much so that we forget to take time out to recharge our minds. To have a fresh mind and an oxygenated body will not only make us feel good but also lead to better decisions, more efficient actions and greater success.

GOOD things are going to happen!
I don't know about you but whenever I read a phrase like the one in this post, my mood becomes more hopeful... even for a split second before a less hopeful mindset flips back.
But never the less that moment of hope did exist and did have an effect. So rather than dwell on its impermanence why not expand it. After all it did feel good.
The simplest way is to look to what is good already in your life and then bask in the feeling of that. The more we do it the more we like it and before we know its a habit.
Now it doesn't mean that the negative stuff goes away (sometimes it does), but we have a healthier and more resourceful mindset to deal with it.
Get fed up with the negative and reclaim your "what's been good" and spend more time on the sunny side of the street.

I remember when I was a young boy and was out on adventures in the park. Because we were small and couldn't climb over a fence or onto a tree a friend would give us a "leg up".
You know, they would link their two hands together in a form of a stirrup and we would place our foot in the hands and up we would go. And then we would give them a " hand up" to join us.

HOW TO START YOUR DAY WITH A SPRING IN YOUR STEP
"Our first thoughts of the day are like the sunshine that warms the soil for the seeds" (Mary Davis)
I love that quote because it points to the power of words and what we say to ourselves.
Also it contains a little bit about timing. When we start the day with positive thoughts and attitude the day is more fun, we are more resourceful and things fall more into place.
That's why I like little word games like the one in this post. I can't resist them, to try and find out what my day will hold.
Yes it can be thought that these word grids are just nonsense. But the way I see it, its fun, I get a little dopamine hit when I find a word and you can't see or say a word without feeling some of its meaning so it acts as a pattern interrupt and reset for me.

HOW TO TAP INTO YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL!
If you have a sense that there is more to be had either accessing more of your abilities or having greater motivation , resilience or that loving relationship or a sense of self then you are RIGHT!
Something inside you is tapping on that door to your potential wanting it to be opened so that you can enjoy your life.
Our job is to listen and take action! And it can be any action whatever you feel you are able to do. Any action creates movement, which means that you are taking control, increases hope and that key to your door of potential notches up a little more towards OPEN.
A great way to get things moving is to start doing something different each day. It could be drive to work a different way, put the milk into the tea cup first (or the other way round), get out of bed from the other side..... anything to start the brain to rewire. You may even notice that change can be fun.

DON'T BE ASHAMED!!!
Recently I took someone at face value and believed in their words, only to find the opposite is true. Their actions did not match their rhetoric.
And I felt ashamed that I was taken in.
Then I thought why should I be ashamed I was true to my actions, the other party should be ashamed.
But hey that's life... you have to roll with the punches.
So what can we do to move forward in situations like that? Here is what I'll be doing:
- Not compromising my values and continuing to be true to myself
- Learn from my experience from the part I played and fine tune my intuition.
- Have greater clarity of how I want to be in the world and to operate from my power rather than depending on others to hold my value and values. No one can hurt you unless you give them your power.
So yes it wasn't nice but I've learnt to be a little wiser and listen to actions rather than words. So maybe Karma was working for me to give me a lesson and so greater presence in my world.
Like Zig Ziglar said "If you learn from failure you never really loose".
So for those that know what I'm talking about in the above scenario - I feel you! I know its not easy and it hurts but lets use that hurt to take back our power. Its an opportunity to reset and recalibrate to a stronger and wiser you - you still can be you but maybe a little more informedπ
Remember to stay positive and learn and thrive rather than just survive.

Life is a complicated thing with many demands, knowns, unknowns, fears and pleasures. Luckily we have a miracle in our brains and that's our mind - a kind of personal emotional sat nav. It helps us navigate life's complexity without thinking. The wisdom of our life experience and solutions are programmed into it.
However on occasion we come across a road block, maybe road works or an accident that can slow down our progress or stop us all together.
It could be unexpected changes in our lives, redundancies, take overs at work, relationship breakdown, illness, menopause, mid-life crisis, bereavement, imposter syndrome, aging. I'm sure you can name your own.
That's when we have to update our SAT NAV to get through, around or over the block so we can, Move Forward.
How do we do that?
By re-establishing connection to the part of our brain that is rational, creative and can find the solutions. Remember the stuck-ness is because we are lost in the unhelpful emotional responses to the road blocks.
πOne simple way to do that is - "In any given moment Breathe and Relax"
This calms the Negative Nigel that sometimes kicks in when stressed so that we can think clearly and come up with a solution and plan.
πAnd remember you have longer than you think. Use that time to compose yourself.
