Today, on the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, we honour the memory of those who suffered and fought for freedom.
At Bawso, we stand in solidarity with all those who continue to fight against the injustices of modern slavery and human trafficking. The legacy of the transatlantic slave trade reminds us of the resilience of those who resisted oppression and the ongoing need to advocate for human rights and dignity.
Let us use this day to reflect, educate, and commit to a future free from exploitation and discrimination. Together, we can continue the fight for equality and justice.

General Election Recommendations from the UK Anti-Slavery Sector
As we approach the forthcoming General Election, we call on all political parties to express a renewed commitment to ending modern slavery in the UK and worldwide.
Policymakers must engage with at-risk communities and survivors meaningfully to ensure our collective response meets their needs and reflects their hopes for justice.
We urge the future government to commit to these principles:
- Prevent Modern Slavery: Adopt a holistic approach to minimise vulnerabilities across all policy areas.
- Prioritise Sustainable Recovery: Ensure survivors can access their rights to support, protection, and justice through a cross-government strategy.
- Uphold Justice: Hold perpetrators accountable and ensure survivors receive compensation.
Inquest into Zara Aleena murder
The final hearing of the inquest into the murder of Zara Aleena commenced on 3 June 2024 at the East London Coroner’s Court.
During the hearing, it was revealed that there were delays in sending the paperwork to initiate the recall to prison of Jordan McSweeney days before he killed Zara.
Zara’s aunt, Farah Naz, told the jury on Monday the family was "tortured by thoughts that (Zara's) death was preventable and that our state system that we entrusted failed our Zara, failed us".
Our justice system must do more to protect citizens, especially women and girls.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Zara during this very difficult time.
