#16DayOfActivism 2023 Day 15.mp4
Maya's Survivor Story On Day 15 of #16DaysOfActivism, we are honored to share Maya's powerful journey. Forced into a marriage with hidden horrors, Maya endured unimaginable hardships, including threats, abuse, and exploitation. Locked in silence, Maya found her voice through a brave encounter with a GP who urged her to escape. With the support of the police, she broke free, but the challenges persisted—her visa canceled, nowhere to turn. Maya found @bawso, who offered refuge, Bawso not only saved Maya's life but also ignited a transformation. From a place of fear, Maya emerged as a beacon of strength, now navigating college, work, and life with newfound confidence. Maya's journey, a testament to resilience, reminds us that every survivor's story deserves to be heard. Let's stand together to end violence and empower those who courageously rise from adversity. #SurvivorStories #BawsoImpact #BreakTheSilence #EndViolence #16DaysActivism #ForcedMarriage #HonourBasedViolence #SocialJustice

#16DayOfActivism 2023 Day 13.mp4
Day 13 of #16DaysOfActivism: Our service users, key voices in forced marriage and honour-based violence research, urge agencies to take crucial actions: Ensure that perpetrators are identified as individuals and held accountable for their actions. A concise adoption of a whole-societal approach to tackling perpetration. Work with individual perpetrators to change their behaviour through early intervention programmes. A comprehensive system to be put in place to work with perpetrators before the abuse escalates. Hold perpetrators accountable for all breaches of protection orders and protect victims. Ensure that all abuse convictions reflect the crime committed. The minister for social justice and chief whip, Jane Hutt has been persistent and clear in her messages that ‘it is not for women to modify their behaviour, it is for abusers to change theirs.’ Let's tackle misogyny and perpetration at all levels for a safer society. 🧡💪🏽🌍 #EndViolence #16DaysActivism #ForcedMarriage #HonourBasedViolence #SocialJustice

#16DayOfActivism 2023 Day 12.mp4
On day 12 of #16DaysOfActivism, we focus on crucial actions advocated by women survivors of violence, aligning with the Welsh Government’s VAWDASV strategy for 2022. These proposals are intertwined with both public health and the blueprint approach, reinforcing a comprehensive framework. Key actions include: - Clear identification of survivor support needs. - Provision of extensive support and protection from agencies and police at the incident report stage and throughout the support period. - Continuous assurance of victim safety during their support period. - Long-term and immediate specialist BME counselling services. - Synchronisation of statement recording and the adoption of a flexible process for survivors to re-record statements if needed. - Establishment of a wrap-around support system for victims and their children, irrespective of immigration status. These proposals not only echo the resilience of survivors but also underscore the importance of a unified approach to address violence against women. Let's advocate for these vital changes and contribute to building a safer and more supportive society🧡 @bawso #EndViolence #16DaysActivism #VAWDASV #EndViolenceAgainstWomenandGirls

#16DayOfActivism 2023 Day 10.mp4
Day 10 of #16DaysOfActivism, we're drawing attention to Wales' steadfast commitment to combatting #domesticviolence. Over the years, Wales has proactively addressed this critical issue through a multifaceted approach, encompassing legislative measures, policy initiatives, and robust community-based efforts. At the forefront of these efforts is the Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse, and Sexual Violence (Wales) Act 2015, a groundbreaking piece of legislation that sets a new standard for addressing gender-based violence. This act not only places legal obligations on public bodies but also mandates collaboration, ensuring a united front in the prevention and response to violence against women. Crucially, the 2015 Act emphasises a survivor-centred approach, underscoring the importance of tailored support for victims. By prioritising the well-being and empowerment of survivors, this legislation seeks to break the cycle of violence and provide a pathway to healing. As we reflect on Day 10, let's amplify awareness and champion change. Together, we can contribute to a safer, more supportive society for all. 🧡 @bawso #EndViolence #EndViolenceAgainstWomenandGirls #WalesActivism #16DaysActivism #RaiseAwareness #SpeakOutAgainstAbuse #TogetherWeCan

#16DayOfActivism 2023 Day 9.mp4
On the Day 9 of #16DaysOfActivism, let's shine a light on the dark reality of #ModernSlavery and #HumanTrafficking Human trafficking involves the deceptive or coercive movement of individuals, exploiting them under conditions of abuse and vulnerability. Today, we stand against this heinous crime, advocating for awareness and change. Bawso Support: Within the battle against human trafficking, organisations like Bawso are on the frontline, offering refuge and support to survivors. Currently, we run 2 refuges: 🚹 Male Refuge: Accommodating 4 men at a time, providing a safe haven for those seeking escape from exploitation. Currently at full capacity, emphasising the urgent need for awareness and action. 🚺 Women’s Refuge: A sanctuary for up to 10 women, offering safety and resources to rebuild their lives. As this refuge is currently at full capacity, let's unite to amplify the voices of survivors and work towards eradicating human trafficking. Join us in supporting Bawso and raising awareness about modern slavery. Together, we can break the chains of exploitation and build a world where everyone is free. 🧡 @bawso #EndHumanTrafficking #BreakTheChains #BawsoSupport #16DaysActivism

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM 2023 Day 8.mp4
On Day 8 of #16DaysOfActivism, we're delving into No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF). This immigration condition denies financial support or state assistance to those without legal entitlement. NRPF impacts not only non-EEA individuals but also UK citizens born abroad and returning citizens. Here's a snapshot of NRPF support: 2019-2020: 115 cases 2020-2021: 99 cases 2021-2022: 171 (including 89 under the Home Office pilot project since April 2021) Unsettlingly, 82 victims lacked support in 2021/2022. Bawso supported 175 victims under the Home Office pilot scheme from April 2022 to March 2023, through the Support for Migrant Victims Scheme (SMV). In Wales, Minister Jane Hutt has extended a grant to Bawso, addressing gaps in the SMV scheme. The Welsh Government's Migrant Victims of Abuse Support Fund empowers Bawso to aid an additional 15 victims and those under the SMV project beyond the 12-week Home Office support period. @Bawso #NRPF #RaiseAwareness #SpeakOutAgaintsAbuse

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM 2023 Day 7.mp4
On Day 7 of #16DaysofActivism, we shed light on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Startling statistics from BBC News revealed that 123 FGM victims were treated in Wales in 2016. Maternity staff in Wales discovered a case of FGM every three days on average, with 44 children under 18 identified as vulnerable to this practice. The report detailed FGM cases across seven Welsh health boards, with Aneurin Bevan Health Board recording the highest at 53 women, Cardiff and Vale Health Boards with 45 cases, and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg reporting 20 cases. Hywel Dda, Cwm Taf, and Betsi Cadwaladr recorded 5 or fewer cases, while Powys Teaching Health Board had no recorded cases. Data from Public Health Wales (April 2016-March 2020) shows NHS support for a total of 887 cases. Despite UK FGM legislation since 1988, only two convictions occurred in 2019 and 2023. These findings highlight ongoing gender-based violence, often concealed. However, due to inconsistencies in community education, data collection, and sharing, estimating figures becomes challenging. Consequently, addressing the nature of violence and implementing early interventions for victims remains difficult. @Bawso #EndFGM #FemaleGenitalMutilationAwareness #RaiseAwareness #BreakTheSilence #SpeakOutAgaintsAbuse

FGM continues to exist in Europe. Such a violation of human rights must be eradicated globally. Join us in saying #NoToFGM this #ZeroToleranceDay.
