Improvisation is one of the defining elements of jazz - composing melodies and lines on the spot over cord progressions.
For many players it’s a real ‘out of my comfort zone’ thing. How do you start? Where do you start? What if you play ‘wrong’ notes? What if it sounds awful?
Sometimes you just have to give it a go!
At Saxworld this week, we all had a go! And somehow we found notes that worked and melodies that flowed.
Our ensembles are an encouraging and supportive place to try new things with your instrument. No judgement, just a huge amount of enjoyment exploring the great sounds of jazz.

National Saxophone Day is celebrated on November 6, on the birthday of Antoine-Joseph 'Adolphe' Sax, the inventor of the saxophone.

Playing an instrument can be a challenge and it's easy to be disheartened if you haven't quite 'got it'.
Keep going - you're doing better than you realise. Every practice session, every wrong note, every attempt at getting it right - it's all progress.

We're really excited to be growing our new jazz ensemble and it's sounding great with sax, trumpet and drums. We're all learning and developing our playing with great jazz arrangements and jazz standards and its such fun!
But we need to add more colour and are seeking bass, guitar, piano/keyboards and trombone.

. . . . David Fitzgerald; musician, music teacher and originator and music director of Saxworld, exciting new ensembles for Norfolk.
With a career as a professional musician, David has directed jazz and saxophone ensembles for around 25 years. David's vision for Saxworld is to provide an opportunity for musicians of ALL ages to learn to play as part of an ensemble. He describes it as 'a community of learning' where new music can be enjoyed and explored together with an attitude of encouragement.
Playing music with others is great fun but especially brings real purpose to your playing and musical experience.
