Improvisation is one of the defining elements of jazz - composing melodies and lines on the spot over cord progressions. For many players it’s a real ‘out of my comfort zone’ thing. How do you start? Where do you start? What if you play ‘wrong’ notes? What if it sounds awful? Sometimes you just have to give it a go! At Saxworld this week, we all had a go! And somehow we found notes that worked and melodies that flowed. Our ensembles are an encouraging and supportive place to try new things with your instrument. National Saxophone Day is celebrated on November 6, on the birthday of Antoine-Joseph 'Adolphe' Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. Thank you Adolphe - I wonder if you had any idea of the impact your invention would have on the music world? Sounds like a good excuse to pick up my saxophone!
