Well done to BAE Systems, one of our very generous donors - helping us to support cadets, reserves - and veterans! Glad to be able to give back support lots of veterans working for partners like BAE Systems.

We’ve been recognised as a Top Employer of Veterans in the UK by the Great British Employers of Veterans 🪖 🇬🇧

The Great British Employers of Veterans programme was established last year and aims to celebrate the very best Forces Friendly organisations across the UK. Super proud of Shiza and all cadets like her who have pushed themselves out of their comfort zone, taken part in challenging adventurous activities - developed courage, respect, integrity, selflessness, and life skills such as resourcefulness and risk- assessment - all skills unable to be taught or learnt in the classroom - but vital to become valuable employable young adults in the future - for military or civilian organisations.

The Ulysses trust develops these attributes and skills in our young cadet and reserve forces, through the power of challenge and adventure. We could not achieve this without the support of our donors like BAE Systems - who have supported so many of our cadets and had huge social Impact on individuals, families, schools and society as a whole. On behalf of all those brilliant young people - Thank you 🙏

We like to say thank you to those that support our charity and today we'd like to say to Core Telecom Limited

They provide our charity with a free 0300 telephone service which includes options for callers to connect to different members of our team and an excellent voicemail service which sends the messages to us via email. Core Telecom Ltd set all of this up for us for free and have been very helpful when we have need to change anything. Everything works very easily and enables callers to contact our charity without any hassle. It’s a great service!

One of the most notable benefits of this provision has been the cost savings. By receiving this service for free, we have been able to allocate more resources directly to our charitable goals, allowing us to expand our reach and impact. The money saved on communication expenses has been redirected towards funding expeditions and supporting young people to benefit from these live-changing adventures.

Polly Marsh, CEO of The Ulysses Trust said, “I am so grateful to Core Telecom for supporting The Ulysses Trust by providing our telephone service free of charge. This directly benefits the cadets, reserves and veterans that we support by enabling us to give more funding to those who need it most, adding to the social impact we have, especially during the current cost of living crisis - they are helping us to change lives. Thank you Core Telecom Ltd!"

thanks to all our supporters who help us promote our charity and continue to help us to change lives.

Cash boost to help disadvantaged kids take part in daring adventures 26/06/2024

Great to see this article in the South London Press which acknowledges the fantastic support we get from London Masons to enable young London cadets to undertake challenging expeditions.

The London Freemasons’ Paul King said: “We love how the Ulysses Trust gives opportunities to young Londoners – and particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds – to develop skills which they will use for the rest of their lives and make them into better citizens.”

Thank you London Masons!

Cash boost to help disadvantaged kids take part in daring adventures he Reserves’ Forces and Cadets Association, which enables the organization to plan the expeditions – which might include sailing trips and mountain hikes.

Interesting to see the British Antarctica Survey Otter plane will be at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) this year. We've supported several expeditions to Antarctica over the years and some have used the Otter to get to their start point. It's travelled all the way from the South Atlantic to attend the show and for maintenance work. It's just one of the amazing planes at this year's show. Did you know that proceeds from RIAT support the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and they support the The Ulysses Trust. So why not visit RIAT 2024 19-21 July at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and help support two great charities? Tickets are selling fast, and Saturday is already sold out, but you can still get tickets for Sunday - see https://www.airtattoo.com/

The Ulysses Trust is delighted to announce the appointment of two distinguished new Trustees to the charity’s board: Honor Wilson-Fletcher and Dawn McCafferty. Their extensive experience and shared commitment to enhancing opportunities for young people and cadets promise to be invaluable to the Trust’s mission.

Honor Wilson-Fletcher MBE FBES FRGS brings 8 years’ experience from her role as CEO of British Exploring Society and from a variety of non-executive roles in skills development and education to the Ulysses Trust. With much of her career dedicated to fostering young people’s development, and all of it to widening access, Honor’s vision aligns with the Trust’s goal of supporting reserves and cadet units in undertaking challenging and character-building expeditions. She has expressed considerable enthusiasm for learning from and contributing to the Trust’s innovative approaches.

Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty CBE recently retired from her position as Commandant Air Cadets. Known for her dedication to youth development and outdoor activities such as trekking and kayaking, Dawn has been sought after by numerous organisations for trustee roles. Her decision to join The Ulysses Trust reflects her alignment with the charity’s values, aims, and interests in promoting personal growth through adventurous activities.

Brigadier Tim Seal, Chair of The Ulysses Trust, was pleased to announce the appointments which were unanimously accepted by the charity’s Trustee board: “We are thrilled to welcome Honor and Dawn to our board. Their impressive backgrounds and commitment to developing life chances for young people are exactly what we need as we continue to expand our impact. There are exciting developments ahead, and with their expertise, we can achieve even more for our reserves, cadets, and society in general. I am looking forward to their contributions and shaping our future together.”

Our thanks to all our supporters who help us promote our charity and continue to help us to change lives.

The Ulysses Trust is proud to support and encourage other organisations to put social mobility at the heart of what they do.

Creating opportunities for everyone to achieve their full potential, regardless of where they might have started out in life, not only helps build a fairer and more equitable society, but also creates an empowered workforce of diverse voices and lived experiences.

In 2020 we were delighted that Tile Cross Academy was named as the winner of the School/College of the Year in the UK Social Mobility Awards for its social mobility work. We have supported the Academy's cadet unit to undertake expeditions on many occasions supporting over 100 cadets and our contribution to support the cadet unit was part of their submission that won the award. Tile Cross Academy serves one of the most disadvantaged communities in Birmingham so our support is targetted to help those that need it most at a critical time in their lives.

More recently we have worked in partnership with our friends at BAE Systems to produce a short video about one of the cadets/students from Tile Cross Academy who has benefitted from our support. Shiza's story is an example of how transformational the cadet/expedition experience can be and there are many more similar success stories who have benefitted from our support during their journey. You can find out more about The Ulysses Trust via our website or read our recently published Impact Report - get in touch and we will send you a copy.

Great to see the Army Sport Impact Report has been published today. The Ulysses Trust is featured on page 23 as Army Sport are one of our key supporters. Here's what our CEO, Polly Marsh said, "The funding from Army Sport has made a significant contribution to the support given to cadet units undertaking Adventurous Training and community-based projects. Planning and participating in expeditions develop valuable life skills including initiative, leadership, self-confidence, judgement, working with others and physical well-being. These characteristics can significantly help young people reach their full potential as effective contributors to their communities, and to employers, and as role models within society as a whole. For cadets especially, not only are they a valuable aspect of youth engagement, but young people from very different backgrounds sharing challenges and hardship together means expeditions are among the most effective vehicles to help social mobility, cohesion and inclusion."

Read the report to find out more about more about Army Sport and its recent achievements.

Army Sports Impact report 2024

"This inaugural report seeks to highlight what Army Sport has achieved over the past financial year. These achievements, focused on maximising opportunities for our soldiers to participate in sport, have been achieved in collaboration with our close partners. These opportunities span unit to world class level, and include support for adventurous training, cadets and veterans."

Such an honour last night, for The Ulysses Trust to be awarded the Geographical Prize 2024, from Royal Geographical Society (with IBG).

The award is given to an organisation that has provided outstanding (non-commercial) support for individuals or groups learning through expeditions, and enables the impact that arises from challenge, exploration and expeditions to benefit individuals, schools and the public.

This is a prestigious award from the world's leading Geographical Society. The Trust is delighted to be recognised for the support we give to enable our cadets and reserve forces to undertake expeditions. Taking part in adventurous activities develops confidence, resilience, courage and integrity. It also develops life skills such as risk awareness and resourcefulness.

The award was presented during , which is perfect timing as so much of our work is undertaken by our fabulous team of volunteers. We are hugely grateful to all our volunteer team who work so hard to support the charity.

Also, a BIG thank you to all our donors who make it possible.
