Forage // Harvest
It’s Bilberry Sunday, and lots of hedgerow fruits are ripening, and interesting mushrooms are showing up in the woods
There’s a different feel comparing foraging to harvesting
Foraging is a wander, gathering a few of what you see along the way, leaving more behind than you take - for the plant, the animals that will feed from it and for the earth around it,
It’s slower, more intuitive, eyes picking out just the right colour of fruit or fungus, and hands testing its readiness - the feel for that ‘yield’ of a ripe fruit - no forcing or effort, and lots of connection to what’s around you,
Whereas a harvest is busier, more intentional, clearing as much of a crop as can be used and stored for later. It’s a more intense type of work and activity and a big focus of many of the traditional late summer and early autumn celebrations,
Sometimes we need to push, to work hard to get through something, and we also need to recognise times for slowing down, taking just a little, finding ways to yield, and permission to take a different pace for a different kind of work,
We’re settling into that gentler feel of a forage in the yoga practices this week, balancing effort and yield, with flowing practice, smooth transitions and supported holds

On the mat or off the mat:
There are some big overlaps in my work in counselling, and in teaching & practicing yoga,
Similar things happen in both spaces, although they can look quite different,
They both require a safe space to work in, someone you trust to help with making gentle changes, somewhere you can notice yourself, suspending old judgements, reactions and defences, to make room to try doing things just a little differently,
In the counselling room and on the yoga mat, you might experiment with small changes, and develop greater capacity to pay attention to yourself,
For some people talking is a natural place to start working on changes, for others, action and doing suits better,
Sometimes the changes you experiment with come out of the counselling room and into your relationships with others,
Sometimes the changes you experiment with in movement, posture or body awareness come off the yoga mat and into how you sit, stand or move,
Both types of work can offer rich rewards, and ways to connect with yourself more deeply, offering back, as much as you wish to put into them
Counselling spaces are currently full, until September 2024, but free consultation calls continue to be available
Yoga classes are running throughout the summer and with the exciting addition of Yin Yoga for the Autumn/Winter programming - links in bio or join the WhatsApp group for first look at what’s on

Holding Space
It is a challenge
We have to create a space to pay attention to ourselves, before we can hear what care we might need
Creating a space to do this is difficult
- other things crowd it out
- we get too tired
- it’s hard to have to notice what doesn’t feel ok
- we have existing habits for distracting ourselves rather than tuning in
Sometimes you need removed from the day-to-day demands and responsibilities to be able to hear yourself - not just thoughts, but body and mood too
Nourish is a space each month, an opportunity to pay attention to your head, heart and body
https://tr.ee/mu36pETfV- book here:
Regardless of what techniques or practices or approaches we decide to use, the slowing down, and listening has to come first

Intentionality
Bringing deliberateness to our actions and responses, changes what happens behind the scenes,
Even when we still choose something that looks the same on the outside
It is what happens when we pause just long enough to be deliberate, and gently lift control away a moment, from old habits, reflexes, coping strategies or auto-pilots
We may still end up choosing to do the thing we usually do, but behind the scenes, the process has changed,
There may be a little space to see a menu of options, even while also acknowledging,
“I’m not quite ready for that one.”
“I don’t have enough in the tank for that just now, but I could consider it again.”
“Even if I always respond this way, I can see there are other things that are possible too.”
With many parallels across therapeutic practice and yoga practice, acting intentionally is one which regularly comes up in the work
When we are aware, and take action deliberately, we set change in motion, even if it isn’t visible at the surface for quite some time
It might be how we respond in an argument, how we speak to ourselves when something goes wrong,
Or how we approach a stretch, support ourselves in a balancing pose, or the narratives about how we think our body ‘should be’
Intention will be the theme for the next block of AM Yoga where we’ll have plenty of opportunities to practice and explore this, inside and out

Pacing
We’ve signs of longer days, brighter weather and a greener outdoors beginning to appear
A few early hints of spring returning, but along with those last blasts of cold, we get a reminder to pace ourselves too
Sessions this February have a big focus on that balance between getting ready to move with a return of momentum, and registering the need to pace activity
Maybe no coincidence that I’m looking at adding Yin Yoga this autumn, with its slower pace and respect for the pauses - for integrating and processing
So here’s an invitation for a pause, a scrolling pause, or a couple of slow, leisurely breaths, a short rest, or whatever might balance or punctuate any busy-ing you are in right now
(& we’re still holding off on New Years resolutions here… some lovely workshops prepped for that work come March when the clocks change)
You might be able to hold a sprint for a hundred metres or so, but sustaining movement over the marathon distances of life, requires pacing, and pauses, and rests
I have drop-in spaces available this month, on Tuesday morning yoga classes at Blaney Spa and Yoga Centre 10-11am. Suitable for any level of yoga & with kit provided

Intentions vs resolutions
On pausing resolutions and external change until the spring & instead, exploring the internal shifts first ❤️
Do you tend to set resolutions?
Things to start doing every day, to always, or never do - that can look positive on the surface, but might have pass/fail tests built in
An intention is different, it’s not about a specific outcome or test of will, it’s an approach, a way to focus your mindset or attention, but can still act as a motivator with something you are aiming for
One crucial difference between an intention and a resolution is that it is much more difficult to make an intention into a stick to beat ourselves with.
With noise in our head like “You never manage to...”
“What’s the point in trying... you always fail”
“There you go again, can’t even do...”
We will slide in and out of focus with an intention, but it remains there as an anchor or reminder, to draw us back towards where we would like to be, with more patience, generosity and kindness than a rule or resolution
We will be working on these subtle distinctions in how we set ourselves up for gentle change or the boom & bust of pass/fail tests, in the next Sustain session this Thursday and when we return to morning yoga next week

Why yoga?
If we want to care for something we need to offer it attention first
Yoga can provide that space for you to explore paying attention to, and listening to your body, learning how to move it intelligently, and with respect, and care
Having been using yoga on and off for around 17 years, it really became a regular fixture for me over the last 10 years working in counselling
Yoga became more and more important, for observing, and releasing physical stress, mental stress & emotional stress
So yoga classes are now on offer:
Alignment-based yoga, in small class sizes, where you can get the benefit of individually tailored modifications, adjustments and cues - a safe & encouraging space for beginners, as well as plenty of challenge for you to refine your existing practice
With quality attention, comes the opportunity for quality care
AM yoga Enniskillen
Every Wednesday morning 7:30-8:30am
Space to set yourself up to meet the day

Drawing in a harvest
Saving for a rainy day
Laying a trail of breadcrumbs
The work we do in rhythms, in times of plenty, putting away the extra to shore us up when we are more stretched
It’s bright and light at the moment, a time of year when it’s much easier to go do things which are good for your head
It’s also a good time to think about what you tend to need and find hard to reach for, when the colder, darker seasons draw in
Take a little time to yourself today, to sketch out a menu, of things that support you, when discomfort, stress, low mood or low energy set in
Put it somewhere you can see, and set as many of those things up to be easy to reach for, when you’ll need them
Your menu might be a list on paper, a collage of pictures, a basket or drawer with some books, tools and physical prompts - anything that reminds you, of the often small things you already know help
If you need more accountability or would enjoy getting support to practice what you know, try six months of sessions on Sustain Blaney Spa and Yoga Centre : every 1st Thursday 8-9:30pm, to set yourself up for the month ahead, seeing you all the way through to March
£95/six sessions: journalling prompts to help you tune into yourself, breath work and meditation practices, and the deep release of guided relaxation
