**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**
Todays meme relates to the use of exercise balls to help improve riders pelvic mobility, balance, proprioception and riding.
Ball exercises are useful for riders for multiple reasons. The riders ability to roll the pelvis from side to side when sitting on an exercise ball has been correlated with quality and harmony when riding and fewer conflict behaviours.
There are an array of exercises that can be done with control and precision to help improve pelvic mobility which can then translate to ridden work.

There has been a pause in recordings whilst I've been recovering from concussion and no, I DID NOT fall off a horse! I've kicked back off with a great session designed for riders but great for non riders too using the fabulous foam roller, you'll be lying on it, leaning on it and standing on it!

Please bear with me. It’s not been the greatest couple of weeks. Lots of you know that I walked into a gate 2 weeks ago and I’ve been suffering from concussion (it’s a horrid thing that needs to go away!). Anyway, that’s why there hasn’t been any new Pilates videos posted so please accept my apologies. This afternoon I’ve tried to record one (although balancing on a foam roller was possibly not my best idea!) and found that my new laptop goes to sleep after 5 mins so can’t see what I’m doing. Can’t sort today but hope to get back to it later in the week. SORRY 😣
Brilliant little watch.

Just One Thing - DEEP BREATHS
Practising slow, controlled breathing can slow your heart rate, lower your blood pressure, reduce stress levels, combat anxiety and reduce pain.
You can change the carbon dioxide levels in your blood by slowing your breathing and this reduces the levels of noradrenaline making you feel calmer. Your heart slows and your blood pressure drops because slow breathing triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, this calms you even more.
The noradrenaline system controls how focused and in control we are, it can help us get to sleep and reduce the impact of chronic pain.
Take note of when you might hold your breath, breathe more rapidly or use the upper chest to breathe – try taking a few slow, controlled breaths – you can do this anywhere at any time!
“These online classes are great. Where time is such a limiting factor in our day you can choose the length of your class and what you may want to target. It can be from one or even two quick blasts of maybe 20 mins to a full session with nearly 100 different classes to choose from. You can even just do parts of any class to fit in with your day.”

'One More Thing' - RESISTANCE EXERCISES
Researchers looked at how many press ups 1000 firemen could do in one minute, 10 years later those who had managed 40+ were 96% less likely to have had a heart attack than those who had managed 10 or fewer. Squats are a brilliant resistance exercise, as well as building muscle mass, the up and down movement also stimulates blood flow to the brain which in turn stimulates the hormone responsible for the growth of new brain cells and connections – squats are like interval training for the brain!
Less than 5% of people do specific exercises to build muscle and yet from age 30 you will lose 5% of muscle mass for every decade that passes if you don’t. Loss of muscle mass will lead to poorer posture and increases your chance of back pain. Building or preserving muscle mass WILL improve your quality of life.
Try a couple of minutes of squats every day – but remember that the quality of your exercise is important, we don’t want you getting knee pain!
'Just One Thing' - EAT BEETROOT
Eating beetroot causes an increase in nitric oxide which helps to dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow to muscles, organs and the brain. The vasodilator properties of beetroot means that it can reduce the chance of a cardiac event or strokes, a diet rich in beetroot reduces risk by 10%.
Beetroot will increase a person’s exercise endurance and intensity, eating 2-3 hrs before exercising will have beneficial effects on performance.
Beetroot can be consumed in many different ways; grate into salad, drink in a juice or smoothie, roasted or make into brownies! Try to eat 2-3 beetroots 2 or 3 times per week.
