welcome to Open Mind we are here to help with depression, anxiety or anything you need to talk about
DEPRESSION TIPS:
Shower. Not a bath, a shower. Use water as hot or cold as you like. You don’t even need to wash. Just get in under the water and let it run over you for a while. Sit on the floor if you gotta.
Moisturize everything. Use whatever lotion you like.
Put on clean, comfortable clothes.
Drink cold water. Use ice. If you want, add some mint or lemon for an extra boost.
Clean something. Doesn’t have to be anything big. Organize one drawer of a desk. Wash five dirty dishes. Do a load of laundry. Scrub the bathroom sink.
Blast music. Listen to something upbeat and dancy and loud, something that’s got lots of energy. Sing to it, dance to it, even if you suck at both.
Make food. Don’t just grab a granola bar to munch. Take the time and make food. Even if it’s ramen. Add something special to it, like a soft boiled egg or some veggies. Prepare food, it tastes way better, and you’ll feel like you accomplished something.
Make something. Write a short story or a poem, draw a picture, color a picture, fold origami, crochet or knit, sculpt something out of clay, anything artistic. Even if you don’t think you’re good at it. Create.
Go outside. Take a walk. Sit in the grass. Look at the clouds. Smell flowers. Put your hands in the dirt and feel the soil against your skin.
Call someone. Call a loved one, a friend, a family member, call a chat service if you have no one else to call. Talk to a stranger on the street. Have a conversation and listen to someone’s voice. If you can’t bring yourself to call, text or email or whatever, just have some social interaction with another person. Even if you don’t say much, listen to them. It helps. (You can always call/text/message me!)
May seem small or silly to some, but this list keeps people alive.
* At your absolute best you won’t be good enough for the wrong people. But at your worst, you’ll still be worth it to the right ones. Remember that. Keep holding on.
* In case nobody has told you today I Love you and you are worth your weight and then some in gold, so be kind to yourself and most of all keep pushing on!!!!

There is a lot of discussion and debate surrounding mental health issues in adults. However, less is discussed about children, what they face and the impact of the pandemic on them.
We must recognise that many adults struggle with recognising mental health issues, what to do and how to cope within themselves. We therefore have a generation of children who are also struggling, but are looking to us for support, guidance and solutions.
Albert is six, he is in year two and loving it. However, his homework has quadrupled and there is a feeling of pressure of when he needs to complete it by and to what standard. There is also a feeling of being overwhelmed with multiple clubs and having to somewhat keep up with what everyone else is doing.
I’ve never once bought into the notion that he needs to do something based on what other children may be doing. I always ask Albert what he wants to do, who he wants a play date with and when. It’s his choice, not mine.
Something else I’m very aware of is the education system and how and where he will fit in, to what school and for what reasons. I think many parents choose certain ‘private’ schools for stature and recognition instead of the needs of the child. Once again, this is not something I would ever consider.
Alberts needs are paramount, his happiness and mental state. We are all aware when our children are struggling somewhat. We need to look, and really pay attention.
I always have a plan for when Albert is with me, however it’s something that I discuss with him on the Tuesday before and I’m more than ready for this plan to change. I don’t believe and never have believed that children need to fit into the adult’s world, why should they?
I want to spend more and more time in Alberts world and if that means a pyjama day, eating pizza and watching movies all day then that suits me.
We need to be prepared to listen and learn. To establish what our children are struggling with and recognising the signs of struggle. We then need to discuss these topics and communicate our own struggles with them. Children are fast learners, they learn from a multitude of factors which includes watching what we do.
Albert watches me train, he knows what I’m training for and how my diet changes and the reasons behind it. He sees me working and writing and more importantly witnesses my phone going off and me being with him, present in the moment with him having my undivided attention.
It’s not on someone else to protect the mental health of you and your children. It’s on you, and it’s one of the most important jobs you have.
