Incredible results so far for such a great cause. Thank you so much for your generosity. Ware Brass are proud to be part of this initiative.
Bands bust bowel cancer £10,000 target.
Players from Ware Brass, Potters Bar Town Band and a number of other players from the London area have reached their £10,000 target in their fundraising for Bowel Cancer UK.
Steve Munn, a stalwart bass player of both Ware Brass and Potters Bar tragically died from the disease in December last year. As a mark of their love and affection, his family and friends set about raising funds for Bowel Cancer UK with Brassed Off With Cancer.
Those efforts began back in late April with a truly spectacular concert featuring over 70 brass players, performing music that was connected to Steve and his life.
As part of this concert an original work, Starlings by Alan Fernie, was commissioned and dedicated to Steve. This beautifully emotive piece has since been published by Timbercroft Publishing with a donation from each sale going to Bowel Cancer UK.
After the great success of this concert, which itself raised more than £4,000, the fundraising efforts have continued unabated at events such as the Whit Friday, Hatfield House (the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth I) and other concerts and events across Hertfordshire.
Sarah Munn, Steve’s wife and driving force behind the fundraising said: “I am absolutely blown away by people’s generosity. Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK and this money raised will go towards research which will deliver improvements in
bowel cancer survival in our lifetime.”
Both bands are continuing to fundraise as the first anniversary of Steve’s passing approaches. Ware Brass’ Disney themed concert on 18th November at Ware Drill Hall, will be followed by a Christmas Concert on 16th December, the first anniversary of Steve’s death, where the band will be performing Starlings in his memory.

So far, the fundraising concert for Bowel Cancer UK has raised over £7,700! We are continuing to raise money for the charity and will be participating in the Whit Friday marches next month, dressed in tutus (watch the video and it will make sense!).
The video also links to the recording of “Starlings” that was written by Alan Fernie and dedicated to Steve. Timbercroft Publishing are kindly making a contribution to the charity for every copy of the sheet music that is sold.
The recording of the whole concert will be released soon.
We still welcome any donations, scan the QR code in the video or follow the link in the comments 🙏🎶

Brassed Off With Cancer Help Sarah Munn raise money to support Bowel Cancer UK
Final week before our massed bands concert in memory of our dear friend Steve. See below a press release with full details.
🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Massed brass band to pay tribute to local bandsman and declare they’re “Brassed Off With Cancer
On the 16th December 2022 the brass band community of Hertfordshire, and most particularly Ware Brass and Potters Bar Band, sadly lost a stalwart member in Steve Munn, who tragically died from bowel cancer at just fifty-four years old.
Steve, a talented tuba player, along with his wife Sarah and sons Jim and Jonny had been members of these brass bands for a great number of years. In memory of Steve, his family have put together a special concert, not only to celebrate his life but to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK and to increase awareness of this terrible disease. The “Brassed Off with Cancer” concert will take place on Saturday 29th April at Queenswood School, Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire commencing at 7.00pm.
The concert will be performed by a massed brass band with over 60 players from across the South East and beyond, and in the music featured there will be number of Steve’s personal favourites alongside pieces he performed with his two bands, Ware and Potters Bar. They include showtunes, film music, big band numbers and pop classics including MacArthur Park and John Miles’ Music. In addition to these the concert will feature a world première by leading brass band composer Alan Fernie called Starlings. It is a beautifully reflective piece influenced by starlings’ extraordinary murmuration, and is dedicated to Steve’s memory. This piece will be published by Timbercroft Publishing and a contribution from each sale will be donated to Bowel Cancer UK.
The concert will also feature guest vocal and saxophone soloists, plus an entertaining and well-polished performance from Big Smoke Brass UK. Members of the tuba section will also perform a bass quartet (with band accompaniment) as a tribute to Steve.
Tickets can be bought here at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/brassed-off-with-cancer-tickets-580408456317 . The ticket price includes a commemorative programme together with further information on Bowel Cancer UK and the work it does together with information on how to order a testing kit from the NHS.

Munn memory to help battle bowel cancer A musical celebration of a fine bandsman, aided by a world premiere performance will help the ongoing battle against a terrible disease.
Awarded at our AGM last Monday, Charles Bayford Trophy (Bands Person of the Year)
This award is voted for by the bands members. There were many nominations including: Sarah Munn, Jim Gelder, Lisa Huttlestone, Stuart Black, Jim Munn & Christine Solway, but with a huge majority of the vote, this award was presented posthumously to Steve Munn.
Sadly Steve passed away after a courageous battle with cancer just before Christmas, but he continued playing with us right up to November including performing with us at the Oxford Contest. Always a larger than life member of the Band, this award is part of many tributes to Steve who continues to be missed by us all. The award was presented by band Chairperson – Lisa Huttlestone to Sarah and Jim on behalf of Steve.
At our AGM last Monday we handed out the award for the Musical Directors award for the player of the year.
Butcher Trophy – Musical Director’s Award
This award was presented by our MD – Mark Ager, to our 1st Horn player, Sarah Munn. Sarah stepped up to play Solo Horn at the Oxford Contest and played several Solo’s as part of this. In addition – as we all know this has been an incredibly difficult time for Sarah and she has continued to perform amazingly!! Well done Sarah!
