Guess the tank!
In its day the Char B was regarded as one of the most powerful tanks in the world, yet still had many features which harked back to the First World War. It saw extensive combat in the summer of 1940, during the start of the Second World War.
The example in our collection was captured by the Germans, assigned to 1st Platoon, 1st Company of Panzer Abteilung 213 & shipped to occupied Jersey in 1942. It later found its way to the School of Tank Technology in Britain - before being moved to the Tank Museum in 1951.
Pic 1 – Our example, which can be found in The Tank Story hall today
Pic 2 – The manufacturer’s plate, clearly visible on the front of the vehicle
Pic 3 – 1939 Pattern 75mm howitzer - the same model as is mounted in the hull of the Char B*
Pic 4 – Our tank, pictured during its time at the School of Tank Technology in Chertsey.
* - Bonus fact - further examination suggests that this particular weapon was imported and fitted to the Experimental Tank TOG 1!
The Sexton was a Second World War self-propelled artillery piece which mounted a 25 pounder artillery piece based on the Canadian built Ram or Grizzly tank hulls.
The Sexton fired both HE and AP rounds – and saw use in the Canadian, British, and other British Commonwealth armies, as well as other countries. After the war, a number of Sextons remained in service with the Portuguese army through until the 1980s.

🔥Here’s a pic to set the imagination aflame…! 🔥
We recently received a donation of the personal papers of R.P. Fraser OBE, whose work helped spark development of Second World War British flamethrower fuel, equipment and vehicles.
The collection includes a stash of fascinating photographs – such as this one, showing practical testing and training of the army on the use of flamethrowers

The Mark IV entered service in May 1917 and was the first tank to be produced and used en masse.
Mark IVs were the mainstay of the Tank Corps at Cambrai in November 1917 and fought through to the end of the war. It was a male Mark IV tank which won the very first ‘Tank versus Tank’ action in April 1918 by knocking out the German A7V tank Nixe.
There are six Mark IV tanks left worldwide, three can be found in the UK – one of them being here at The Tank Museum.

Here our CRRAV pulls out the big guns (literally) - moving our 64 tonne Challenger 2.
The CRRAV is based on the Challenger 1 and although we have several different recovery vehicles, we only usually use our trusty CRRAV when the vehicle that needs moving is on the heavier side.
Covering more than 400 tanks – from the very first prototypes, through to Challenger 2 – The Tank Book is the definitive visual history of tanks and armoured vehicles (and would make an excellent Christmas present for the armoured-vehicle-enthusiast in your life – hint, hint!)

Captioned “The Tank as a Submarine”, this series of photos show a Mark V tank of the British Tank Corps Detachment in South Russia in November 1919. The poor vehicle has seemingly taken a wrong turn, and ended up in Novorossysk harbour!
