Have my own events been fewer recently – YES
Am I still running events – YES
Will I be offering a Christmas event with lots of treats next week - YES
You’d be forgiven for thinking all I’ve done recently is … TEDxWarrington.
Though many tasks on this project continue for several weeks after the event, I have been doing other things.
I've organised my own and other people's events, run ongoing marketing projects for clients, and managed Lymm Business Centre.
Next week will see my last event of the year and I’m chucking in plenty of Christmas Cheer, gifts and treats.
If you’re near Warrington, please come along.

'Would you like flowers or donations?' (Part 1)
This statement is poignant. It’s also not mine. But I have been using it and here's why …
I'd like to share two stories that relate to this line. I'll do one today and another to follow
The line belongs to one of my recent TEDxWarrington speakers - Karl Perry
His talk was about life (and death), perspective, fear, CPR and much more I won’t divulge as you can watch the video soon
His talk repeats in my mind. I've not told him why. This week, I was reminded again
The picture below features my daughter and I on a First Aid course this week.
I started taking my two girls to these when they became teens. In the early years, it was more about bumps, bleeding, recovery position and choking. I wanted them to know the basics to help others and especially their much younger brother. They all have anaphylaxis so a med box sits by our front door & they need to know what's in it. Over time though we've added other reasons for doing the course
I've not done one for a while. Covid break I guess. But the recent TEDx talk by Karl was niggling me - regularly
So I booked the British Heart Foundation course Save an Adult Life (Heartstart) at Safety Central in Lymm. Free/by donation, local and included a tour of the fire safety education centre. A no-brainer
Whilst there, the timing of my last visit came into conversation with the instructors
May 2018 - along with one of my best friends
4 days after that course, my friend returned home from work and had to use CPR when she found her husband on the floor having had a cardiac arrest. She applied all her knowledge but tragically it was too late
She had called me. I missed that call as I was in a pitch for Lymm Business Centre (maybe that explains why I feel tied to making that charitable project work because it took me away from helping at an important moment)
When I got to her house, the first thing she said was “I did what they showed us the other night but I couldn’t get him back”
That day is etched on my mind.
It was 8 May 2018
8 May 2019 was the date in Karl's talk. The day he died but despite all the odds, and with more luck on his side, CPR at the right moment saved him. The date hit me like a ton of bricks when he applied. And every time I've heard him speak since. It whispers 'update your CPR' (and so much more)
I cannot stress how valuable these courses are. They may not save everyone, and in fact the odds aren’t great, but they offer a chance
Please learn CPR. And ensure it is learnt in your communities and workplaces – and not just by a single first aider
Please send your staff on courses. Not just for your workplace but because it might save other folk or limit repercussions in their lives
CPR is a life-skill, just like swimming or driving imho.
You don't want to be dealing with the 'flowers and donation' line.
Thank you Karl (and indirectly my TEDxWarrrington work) for reminding me that I needed to refresh my own first aid skills
Always an exciting post-event moment.
If you were an attendee, speaker, sponsor, partner or teamie - enjoy the pictures!

Friday Feel-Good Feedback is ... shows, media and production 👇
It has been a week all about production.
A long hard week and I'm not going to lie, my battery is running low.
Anyone who has ever worked in events will know that events are not just about the event itself.
Post-production is critical.
It's often when everyone breaths a sigh of relief or celebrates event success but work remains.
❌ TEDxWarrington is my current example - extra hard because it's a voluntary project, and an interesting one because of the level of brand compliance.
It is effectively the production of two events as well.
The live event where the speakers deliver their talks.
And then the production of all the talk videos along with due diligence needed for submission to TED, which when approved, should see the talks added to the TEDx channel.
Alongside this, there is the supporting media production.
Over 600 official pictures in edit that have to go into an official TEDx non-profit Flikr account. Hundreds of social and unofficial ones to sort and store. PR and newsletter. And this year, a showreel and numerous vox pop and radio interviews.
All of it has to be edited and reviewed against compliance rules, tagged, and top and tailed correctly. Layer this on top of the usual post-event stuff like closing off budgets, paying suppliers, feedback mechanisms, team debriefs, speaker support, and funder/sponsor thanks and it makes for 2-4 weeks of post-event work involving a lot of production - and people. You'd be right to question a career in events and marketing sometimes 🤔
A huge thanks to those working alongside me this week - my core team Lucy Comma Sense and Gill, marketing team Roz, Sophy, & Beca Beech Web Services Limited and Sharon Mood Digital, and media production Paul Prism Studios, Andrew Collier Photography, Jane Love Your Lens , Warrington & Vale Royal College, Cheshire's Mix 56.
It's not easy when we're all doing it alongside our work so THANK YOU!
For anyone awaiting a). the TEDxWarrington follow up; b). replies to messages; or c). a return to my normal day-job presence,
I'll use Miranda's words and say
"bear with".
My week has however ended with stage productions of a different nature to offer me some much-needed respite.
Wednesday night - bar duty at my kids school to support the production of High School Musical. Fab show. Love HSM. Less keen on standing in the cold to get a signal to take cards payments 😜
Thursday night - Hamilton musical, Manchester. OMG - how amazing! After seeing what my TEDx speakers went through to learn 10-15 minutes of script, I am in awe of the skill in this show.
Feel-Good Friday factor replenished!
NB. Picture featured is Lymm Business Centre that I manage and part of a local charity. It's 1 of several places I dropped my event flowers to. Staff needed some cheer as I neglected them last week at a time when we had so many events running and office/hotdesking requests flooding in.
❌ Here are a few alternative photos, interim thoughts and an amusing video ending about last week's emotional and successful TEDxWarrington 2023 ❌
It's hard to believe that we're on the other side.
I'm still pinching myself that we did it.
Again.
2nd year.
Equally mind-blowing.
Someone needs to tell my mind and body though because it's still waking up at 4am compiling lists and thinking we've yet to deliver.
It feels odd not to have the marketing planning trello board open constantly on my laptop. Or see a gazillion notification bubbles above my various sub-team WhatsApp groups.
There are so, so, so many things I'd like to say about TEDxWarrington last week; to my speakers, my team, our sponsors and suppliers, and even to myself.
It's hard to know where to start.
An event planned for a year.
Since May, worked on weekly.
Since September, daily.
Since November, hourly.
On the night, by the minute.
And now the post-event work remains high, pulling me away from replying to the social feedback which I know was great.
I thank anyone who attended, supported or posted wonderful feedback about the event.
If you search for this last few days, you will be greeted by speakers on stages, the red carpet and TEDx letters, unbelievable comments, and smiley faces of team, audience and event partners.
Until I can unpick my thoughts, I'd like to share my alternative pictures and an amusing video clip at the after-event social.
These snaps won't have been seen and they're nothing fancy but they show some of the real stuff.
Special moments with a story behind each. Memories that are as important as the night itself.
Let me summarise them
❌ Team spirit - an amazing community of speakers and teamies.
❌ Team t-shirts - now washed, dried and back in boxes.
❌ Flowers 💐 - on tables not just to be pretty but added for sensory aroma in the room, relaxation and team-building time for my team, and symbolism to the speakers of my support as they looked out.
❌ Packed cars & shopping trolleys - a lot of stuff and a lot of extra snacks were needed.
❌ Letters & carpets - re-built, painted, cleaned and stored by the Jackson duo.
❌ Lacey bras & snickers (not knickers) - lost property returns the next day and my handbag found full of nutty treats which I requested be removed.
❌ Fizzy post-event relief (day 0) as data was submitted to TED at the weekend.
❌ And my husbands words after the event reception about my affair with a bloke called Teddy X.
I'll gather more eloquent thoughts soon I'm sure to express my pride of the speakers and team, and my gratitude to our audience, sponsors, and a process and journey that is bigger than us all.
Official photos will be out shortly, followed by talk videos, interviews and further video so keep watching the channels.
OMG - Just 1 more sleep!
If you don't know what a TED / TEDx event is or can't understand the importance it holds for those involved, I explain more in my radio interview.
TEDxWarrington literally takes over the lives of those involved for several weeks.
9 speakers, 20+ teamies, 28 sponsor and partner contacts and a load of suppliers. The last few days has been bonkers.
But we know it will be worth it.
Thank you for all that you are doing Lucy Jackman Gill Fletcher Roz Healey Sophy Bostock Paul Chadwick Catherine Sandland Sharon Charteress Kerry Spink Andrew Thorp Andrew Collier Kate Trafford FPSA John Cooper Beca Purvis Kerry Lockyer Joanne Taylor Jane Burkinshaw Kim Griffiths Samantha Newey Rachel Morgan-Trimmer Matthew Jackman Cheshire's Mix 56 Paul Smith Warrington & Vale Royal College Bubble Customised Clothing Sam Wareing Kate Jenkinson

I get a lot of chuckles from folk about the fact that for a few months a year I carry a wooden ❌ in my bag.
These are just some of the pictures taken in recent weeks with my mini ❌ (feel free to guess where they're taken - answers in comments).
Holidays, meetings, events - it’s my permanent appendage right now (& potentially a swear word in my house too 😜)
The 2nd picture shows the team at rehearsals last Thursday where we stood in front of our large stage ❌
I can’t actually believe that we are now just 3 days from the live TEDxWarrington 2023 event.
This event takes months to plan with many weekends, evenings and even holidays becoming rather ❌-focused. Very few people see how much it means to us all and the work involved.
Each and every day for weeks I’ve watched the speaker rehearsals and coaching led by our TEDx speaker trainer.
My marketing team has generated content at an unprecedented level and covered much more than just speaker and sponsor announcements.
The Ops team has finalised venue logistics, catering, staging, equipment and team job specs.
My speaker support team has attended to the admin and personal support needs of our 9 speakers.
Due diligence has been done on talk scripts and contracts completed to allow for video releases.
The IT, AV and Videography teams have scoped the venue, ordered kit, and tested filming angles and connections (& a lot more I don’t follow 😉)
Sponsors and partners have been managed so that all deliverables in their investment are in hand.
Further team members have managed emails, created press releases and newsletters, crunched attendee data, produced lanyards, ordered supplies and finalised floor plans.
On the job specs, I’ve even got ironing t-shirts, buying toiletries and chocolate, and arranging flowers from my mum's garden.
I could go on and on and on!
Every day for the last 4-5 months has involved work by someone (and they put up with so much under my pushy/watchful/planning eye).
I cannot thank the team enough, most of whom are Warrington businesses.
It’s a huge collaborative project and for team members a voluntary project too as commercialising from TEDx is not permitted.
The speakers may go into the limelight but the team make this happen.
This year I have a team of 21, 9 speakers, 16 sponsors and partners, and numerous external suppliers. That’s about 60 relationships going on. A personal challenge for sure when I usually work alone but one I embrace to stretch myself each year.
After asking me why I carry a wooden ❌ around, the next question is usually why would we do it.
Well, my answer to that is shared in my radio interview with Cheshire's Mix 56 last week (link in comments).
Above all though, we are all super-proud to be bringing the TEDx brand to Warrington and showcasing amazing content that we know will spark conversation, share thought-leadership, and potentially bring about changes in human behaviour.
3 days and counting!

Friday Feel-Good Feedback this week is ... happy melancholy & reflective ramblings for any parents suffering reverse separation anxiety
Has this got anything to do with business, and even networking?
I believe it has as I conclude below
My first-born departed for Uni this month & I appear to be experiencing what I'm labelling 'reverse separation anxiety'
As parenting challenges go, it's big
Being an over-thinker and prolific writer, here are my reflections on the whole Uni depart thing
Only relevant if you're a parent too - or is it?
Parenting is an emotional rollercoaster
In a standard year, many flashpoint parenting moments arise
Decembers see exhausted small kids doing school plays and getting sick
June brings sports days, exams, shirt-signing last days and proms
Septembers offer door pictures! I love the endless feed of uniformed kids in front of doors. For parents, it represents another year of proud parenting as they move class or school
And then there's the leaving home moment, some bound for uni. My social feed has been full of packed cars, student bedrooms and words of good luck
That's where I've found myself - a new chapter for my first-born pursuing a medical career she's dreamt about
I've been asked how I feel
Unbelievably excited
Busting with pride
But amidst the happiness, I've been sad. In fact, melancholy is the word I heard from 1 parent and I'd agree. It cuts deeper and is more reflective
I think I've coined two new phrases that sum up the moment
1st - happy melancholy
2nd - reverse separation anxiety
Leaving a child after years of having them at home is odd. It's silly really. We've not lost her but it's the start of everything changing. My husband reminds me that we've done a big part of our job. Got her safely to 18, instilled in her a hard-working ethos and encouraged her to be kind and have fun. It's over to her now
The changed dynamic at home makes me weep too. From 5 to 4. And the impact on my other 2 who were visibly upset when we left her
My son at 11 asked me if he could use his birthday money to buy her a build-a-bear to record his words so she wouldn't forget his voice and he'd be with her every day. We did something similar (we have too many bears). They loved watching the Rio film so we bought the parrot pictured to chat to her
What has this got to do with business and even networking?
On , well, many of us spend more time with business contacts than family members. People in our network can support if we open up
On business, we talk about investing in mental . Well maybe empty/emptier nest syndrome isn't featuring highly enough but may be impacting business. Maybe we need to dial up our emotional intelligence to recognise our/staff feelings and any impact on work
There are a lot of emotional parents right now. It's nothing new, it's life, but it's still hard. If you're not one, please be patient with them as they navigate this alongside work
Friday Feel-Good Feedback this week is ... 📢
getting a great shout out on LinkedIn today
It's always nice to get a mention, whether in-person or online.
I also believe it's one of the best things you can do in networking to build relationships, share learning and news, and foster connection within your network.
A perfect example of this was shown today on LinkedIn.
And I'm not just saying that because I got a mention - and even a photo!
I've followed Chris Maguire's Friday good news blog on LinkedIn for a long time as it's packed full of very relevant and interesting business news. When contacts ask me which LinkedIn accounts I regularly follow, enjoy and would recommend, this is one I always mention. To explain it, I usually joke that whilst I share a regular Friday post too, mine is more personal touchy-feely updates, local wins and micro news, whilst Chris's covers the serious, bigger business news and need-to-knows in the region.
As for the content of this post (and my mention), well, it's via the link below for you to read. If I can answer any queries about TEDxWarrington, please give me a shout.
Enjoy your Friday and happy networking 🙂

Friday Feel-Good Feedback this week is ...
Business. Values. Community. Friends. TEDx.
At the Warrington Business Exchange annual conference today.
Business:
A fantastic showcase of what is achieving.
A smorgasbord of economic and political highlights as well as business stories, advice and inspiration from speakers and panelists, expertly hosted by Christopher Maguire with his usual and much enjoyed level of whit.
Values:
A focus on values, culture, and people (whether colleagues or customers) as a core component in 'Maximising Performance' (today's theme). Particularly loved hearing about the focus on people and family culture at Bents Garden & Home by Matthew Bent, Torus by Debbie Attwood, Sellafield Ltd by Michelle Lambon-Wilks, PAM Group by James Murphy, Thomas Hardy Brewery Limited by Chris Ward and Gulliver's Theme Park Resorts by Julie Dalton
Community:
A palpable display of collaboration and unity.
It's quite special and extremely valuable to have such a strong, close-knit business community. A great day of networking with both familiar and new business contacts.
Friends:
Many of today's contacts have over my 15 years in business become great business friends, partners and colleagues. Networking and connecting at a human level always pays additional dividends.
TEDx:
Grateful to be singled out to stand up and receive a mention about TEDxWarrington which is an important and valuable event opportunity tor the town to benefit from.
As we open up event partnership opportunities, we're delighted to have taken the X to WBEx today given that they will be one of our official partners on 16 November.
Thank you for today Warrington Business Exchange &Co Warrington Chamber of Commerce & Industry - your agenda and speakers were great.
Friday Feel-Good Feedback is … these 5 pictures 👇and my first Friday post and day back in work for 5 weeks
Any back-to-work blues will need to shove over quickly as there's lots to be excited about and my batteries are now recharged after my first proper summer off.
On this 1st day of September, my Friday Feel-Good factor is displayed by these pictures (rather than the 500+ from my lovely 5-week driving trip round Spain, France and Italy).
1.
The best news of my summer. After a very stressful, emotional & challenging 18 months (& results day), my daughter got into Uni to do Medicine. We've been celebrating since.
Is this relevant to work, hell yes!
On my part, it required huge work sacrifices to support the last year.
On her part, networking contacts contributed to work placements and her work experience in my business over the years led to transferable skills at interview and selection stages.
Though I'm not looking forward to her leaving home, the dynamics of reducing to 2 kids at home plus the end of me needing to cover wrap-around childcare for my youngest should mean more balanced and less stressful work days.
2.
I've managed to read loads of books and since I always look for recommendations from others, I thought I'd share my recent reads.
I particularly love supporting work from local authors who I've met networking. Included below are great books by Christie Barlow Author, Suzan Holder Author and Jude Lennon. (Yes, I will leave reviews, DW).
3.
I've just launched my first half-day networking skills workshop on 28 Sept. For those about to hit the networking circuit this autumn, I guarantee that I can help you. Drop me a line if interested. Details at: https://kirstyjames.co.uk/events/networking-workshop/
4.
Despite the X from my TEDxWarrington workload reducing, lots has been occurring behind the scenes. I'm very grateful to the wonderful team I have supporting me.
Shortlisted speaker candidates have been in training with Catherine Sandland and supported logistically by Kerry Lockyer and Rachel Morgan-Trimmer; IT & AV site visits to the Trust Alliance Group done by Paul Chadwick; secret headshots taken by Andrew Collier; new web copy drafted by Lucy Jackman; the ticketing site started by Roz Healey and Sophy Bostock; the social channels filled with facts and 'get-to-know the team' posts from Sharon Charteress and Beca Purvis; AND the first 3 sponsors agreed who will soon be onboarded by Kerry Spink ready to announce soon.
If sponsorship opportunities appeal to you too, drop me a line or visit https://tedxwarrington.com/
And 5.
My husband got into the with a charity place in aid of Muscular Dystrophy UK. I suspect my first task this weekend might be his Just Giving page. Just need to find some accommodation in London now that isn't stupidly priced!
I look forward to catching up on the news of contacts in my network
If you've got any exciting recent news or upcoming plans, feel free to share or even drop in a picture too :)
A break from Networking or not? Event dates, news and resources -
A break from Networking or Networking in your breaks? Event dates, news and resources 👇
You rarely forget your first time.
Whether good or bad, exceptional or indifferent, your first time can never be repeated
Fortunately for me, my first TEDx event in 2022 was exceptional
(Not my words by the way but the words of many others)
But words like that set precedents.
High expectations hang in the air.
It requires a review of everything that genuinely was exceptional.
But also reflection on what was maybe good or great but not exceptional ... but that could be.
2022 went well because of the talented, supportive and committed team involved.
This precedent will be followed.
Sourcing and inviting exceptional people to join me.
Thank heavens for 15 years in which has presented some excellent candidates for all types of projects, not least this one.
Increasing the support team size creates more planning and management work for sure (tricky at times if you're a meticulous, non-delegator by nature as I can be at times) but it is absolutely necessary if exceptional is to stay on my wishlist.
I'm delighted to announce two further team members to the TEDxWarrington 2023 team.
Kerry Lockyer of Oomph Learning & Development Ltd is no stranger to TEDx. As one of my inaugural event speakers in 2022, she knows the ropes, the rollercoaster that awaits speakers and what logistical support to offer.
Here she is in action at my recent full team and speaker first meet-up where I asked her to do what she does for a living - facilitate team cohesion across different personalities and behaviours.
Meanwhile, Joanne Taylor of Task List Assist is another longstanding networking contact. I've known her for years, from the days when she was with Halton Chamber and attended one of my events through to recent months when we completed a uni course together.
The set up of her VA business could not be a more fitting career choice for someone with such diligence and multi-tasking abilities. Jo brings exceptional organisational skills as well as a big smile and bags of enthusiasm to help me manage attendee data and registration.
Welcome onboard ladies.
Really delighted you both said yes to the TEDxWarrington 2023 journey.
Further team profiles are viewable on the new TEDxWarrington website
Friday Feel-Good Feedback is … school break-up.
August is beckoning and it has ‘part-time hours’, 'reduced work/family juggles’ & 'turning my back on school runs' written all over it.
I've spent the last few weeks on the wrong day of the week
The types of days where you take 30 seconds+ to work out what day you're on
I was delivering a training session in a business on a Monday and referred to it as Wednesday all day. By the time I got to Wednesday, I referenced the next day as Friday. Thursday morning the next day was a shock but a pleasant one at having 24hours in hand
There's a simple reason my mind is screwed up
I've worked several weekends recently to prepare for school holidays - a renowned challenge for many working parents
I'm like this twice a year – July and December – flashpoints for many parents. Ridiculously busy times for kids with exams, shows, assemblies, plays, parties, own clothes/dressing up clothes days, hall points day, ice-pop day, teacher gifts, moving up day and more. When layered on top of the usual term-time tasks of trip/lunch money, homework, apps galore, pe/swim kits, trainers/wellies, suncream/coats, club pick-ups/ride shares, then you see why breaking up is such a big Feel-Good moment for any working parent
08.47 feels very different for the next 6 weeks 😉
I know I’m not the only parent who works long hours to accommodate parental duties or for whom breaking up feels great. Or who will still work in August, blended with holidays
I’m lucky that I can flex my work
I chose self-employment for this reason. I left employment many years ago because I could see no alternative to managing the childcare conundrum. Despite flexible work policies, I felt guilty at arriving late after nursery drop, leaving early to beat traffic, skipping lunch to accommodate both, and the prospect of unpaid leave in school holidays
I often wonder how things have evolved. I know they have but talking to friends I know they still juggle the holidays. In fact, regardless of holidays, I still hear odd reactions to the notion of flexible working overall
I’m baffled that we are still mistaking remote, flexible and part time work for lack of work. Many people I know on these arrangements are working harder than their timetabled counterparts
Do you work extra to carve out time for school breaks or holidays?
Do you have staff who have been working ridiculous hours in order to cope with school holidays?
To those working round kids this summer, I wish you well as you adjust your hours and routines
To those it doesn’t affect, I encourage you to be open-minded; judge end results (which may have hidden hours you don't see), not just times on the clock or physical presence
(NB. Photo is working whilst holidaying last summer. 2am in a hotel room. Completed the nomination for an awards, I then won in the autumn, and completed 2 business proposals I won for September work).
