Happy World Hearing Day!

Hearing is without a doubt a vital sense. Having a hearing loss affects our ability to understand and communicate with people.

"Blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people" - Helen Keller.

Here are 5 fun facts about ears!

~ Fish do not have ears, but they can hear pressure changes though ridges on their body.

~ The ear continues to hear sounds, even while you are sleeping.

~ The ears malleus, incase ans stapes are the smallest bones in the human body. All three together could fit on one penny!

~ Ears not only help you hear but also aid in balance.

~ Sitting in front of the speakers at a concert can expose you to 120 decibels, which will begin to damage your hearing in only 7.5 minutes.

Let me know if you learned something new. Feel free to comment any facts that you know.

Here you can see that earwax and a grommet was removed from this lovely patients ears.

There was a mixture of hair and dead skin. This is quite common and nothing to be worried about!

What is a grommet?

A grommet is a small tube, which is inserted into a persons eardrum during surgery. The reason for this is because, when a person cannot hear because there is a build up of fluid in their middle ear, known as glue ear. This small tube helps allow air into the middle ear and prevent fluid build up.

This week is Tinnitus Awareness Week.

Tinnitus is quite a common problem. Tinnitus sounds can range from ringing, buzzing, hissing, clicking, high pitched squealing or other type of sounds.

A build up of earwax can either cause temporary tinnitus or exacerbate existing tinnitus. This is because the pressure of the earwax stimulates the nerve cells in the middle and inner ear.

Earwax removal does not cause tinnitus. However, on occasions after removal, you may become more aware of your tinnitus sounds.

Follow the British Tinnitus Association for more help on how to deal with your tinnitus.

Just to let you know that all appointments are still going ahead. Microsuction appointments are considered as a medical appointment.

PPE will be worn at all times during appointments. This is for the safety of both my patients and I.

I would kindly ask that my patients also wear a face mask during the appointment.

Microsuction of earwax is known to be the safest method and referred to as "gold standard" practice.

The gentle suction device can be quite noisy but makes earwax removal quick and painless. If the earwax is hard, it can be slightly uncomfortable but you will be told in advance if this is the case. To help reduce any discomfort, it is advised to use olive oil 2 nights before and the morning of your appointment.

DM/Email for an appointment.

A test that uses earwax to measure levels of the stress hormone cortisol could “transform diagnostics and care for millions of people with depression or stress-related conditions”, scientists have said.

The researchers believe the test, which can be done at home without clinical supervision, may also have the potential to measure glucose or Covid-19 antibodies that accumulate in earwax.

They say the method is a cheap and effective way to measure chronic cortisol levels, when compared with other methods such as using hair samples.

Your ears are generally self cleaning and so by using cotton buds you are disturbing the process of natural clearing.

Using cotton buds does not remove earwax. In fact it pushes the earwax deeper down into the ear canal. By doing so this can cause the following symptoms:
• Itchness and/or pain
• Hearing loss
• Blocked sensation
• Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
• Odour or discharge

Using cotton buds could also potentially burst your eardrum!

If you require earwax removal please email/DM for an appointment.

GP's no longer provide earwax removal services.

To recieve an appointment from an NHS Ear, Nose & Throat specialist is also very long, especially since COVID 19.

Having earwax can be uncomfortable, cause a slight hearing loss, discharge, amongst other symptoms.

To get earwax removed in the comfort of your own home, contact via email or DM for an appointment.

Sodium bicarbonate can also be effective as a home treatment for earwax management.

It's best used when the earwax is known to be soft. Two or three drops a day for a few days is sufficient.

For people with sensitive or skin conditions like such as eczema or psoriasis, we do not advise. This is because some people find sodium bicarbonate to be drying.

STOP using cotton buds to "clean" your ears!

Using cotton buds in your ears pushes earwax deeper down into your ear canal. This could potentially burst your eardrum!

Ears are generally self cleaning and earwax in most cases works its way out. Earwax helps trap bacteria in your ears. But if you use a cotton bud it could push the earwax and the bacteria down your ear potentially causing an ear infection.

Olive oil can help to soften earwax, which can then help the earwax to work its way out.

You will need to use olive oil purchased from a pharmacy and not cooking olive oil.

It is recommended to use 2-3 drops a a day for a few days. Sometimes the earwax will fall out a few weeks down the line but other times assistance is needed to have the it removed.

Microsuction is the best method to remove earwax. Is it known to be the "gold standard" technique used by Ear, Nose & Throat doctors.

What causes build of earwax?

The most common cause is the use of cotton buds and bobby pins. People think they are remove earwax when in actual fact, they are pushing the earwax further down into the ear canal. This can be very dangerous as you could burst your eardrum!

Some people are just more prone to earwax than others.

Hairy and/or narrow ear canals can make it hard for earwax to work its way out.

As we age, earwax can become much harder and there difficult to come out of the ear.

Hearing aids and earphones can further cause earwax build up.
