Each and every year, the phrase ‘New year, new me’ sweeps social media.

Whether you decide to make New Year resolutions or not, January often feels like a good time to better ourselves. We might set goals to exercise every day, be more productive or take up a new hobby - which we hope will turn us into more successful, well-rounded people. But can trying to reinvent ourselves at the start of a New Year actually be detrimental to our well-being?

We may start a New Year with good intentions, but we often abandon resolutions after just a few weeks or even days. In fact, the fitness app Strava analysed 800 million user-logged activities to predict that most people are likely to give up on their resolutions by 19th January.

When we inevitably abandon our goals, it can come as a huge blow to our self-esteem, confidence and mental health. It can even make us feel like we have failed the entire year and let ourselves down - and that we will never be the person we envisioned back on 1st January.

Let’s stop it with the resolutions, and focus on bettering ourselves in the long-run, not just when the date on the calendar fits.

Ne, Nein, Na, Non – many languages have their own way of expressing the negative, an often abrupt, monosyllabic word that nonetheless holds endless potential. We may see no as the rejection of something: a demand, a request, even an opportunity, but it can serve a far greater purpose.

In every no, there is an implicit yes. It is a yes to our own needs.

This might be an affirmation of our values, of our right to free time, autonomy and an identity that exists outside the sphere of the myriad of demands that life presents us with. Sometimes no is the right to self-respect and an asking of basic respect from others. Perhaps no should not be taken so severely by some as it is; perhaps there is a too much of a reputation of selfishness, coldness and malcontent about a word that is as functional as it is essential.

These are described by the NHS as activities ‘that improve the ability of a joint to maintain the movement necessary for carrying out daily tasks and physical activity.’ Increased ease of mobility, reduced aches, pains and strain and a boosted energy level are all immediate benefits of flexibility exercises, making them ideal for interspersing throughout your daily routine, as well as in preparation for more intense forms of workout. In fact, any activity that involves movement will benefit from stretching. Being anti-inflammatory, these sorts of movements can help maintain muscles in the long run.

After a season of long evenings and golden sunshine, it can be hard to transition into the darker months. Some of us may feel more inclined to wrap up in blankets and stay in our cosy homes than venture out into the cold. However, if you notice that the deterioration of the weather is having a significant impact on your mental health, you may be suffering from Season Affective Disorder. Symptoms of SAD include a persistent low mood, feelings of lethargy and despair on a regular basis and the urge to sleep longer. If you’ve noticed that these symptoms correlate with seasonal change and reoccur annually then this is a strong indication you have this disorder.
