Hari Kuyo is coming!

8th February is the Festival of Broken Needles in Shinto and Buddhist traditions.
This is traditionally when all broken needles and small household objects involved in the health and well-being of the family throughout the previous year are brought for burial by a priest.
The honouring of objects grew from animism- the acknowledgment of the presence of a soul within all of nature eg animals, plants, rivers, mountains, stones.

Many other global traditions expanded their respect for and connection to the natural world by honouring household tools. There are European Goddess ceremonies of blessing and gratitude to ovens and spinning wheels.

Returning to a gratitude and respect for all that surrounds us, both living and inanimate, deepens our sense of connection and improves our mental health.

As Spring warms us let’s connect with the budding new life and on Hari Kuyo why not give a thought to our household utensils that worked so hard for us they broke!
