A message from the Secretary

As the dust settles on a successful week of awards, its time to reflect on the achievements.
I have been involved with WABC in the background for the last 20 years and more directly involved over the last 4 years. Over this period of time, I have witnessed members and coaches come and go but what remains consistent is the dedication from Ray, Sharon and Andy.
It should come as no surprise that Rays dedication over the last 50 years has finally been recognised by England Boxing with the lifetime achievement award. Ray has dedicated his life to the local community of Wellingborough passing on his knowledge of the sport but that’s not all. Ray is a true gentleman and has nothing bad to say about anyone, he will always see the good in everyone and will always be a shoulder for whoever needs one. Like so many other people, I not only look to Ray as a fantastic coach, I also look up to him as father figure, Ray is ‘The Guvnor’, he is the head coach, but also, he is the head of our ever increasing family and with every family there is always new blood, a new generation.

Charlie Gerrard arrived at WABC in 2013 at the age of 16, always a boxing fan watching the sport from a young age and a strong family pedigree in the world of boxing with his Nan working alongside the very well-known promoter Frank Warren. Fast forward 9 years and Charlie became a role model for some of the younger boxers being one of the most senior boxers at the club and it seemed natural progression for Charlie to join the coaching team. Over the last 2 years Charlie has progressed through the coaching ranks to achieve Level 2 status, through determination and dedication under the watchful eye of the Guvnor. Seeing the progression in this young man maturing to a fantastic coach and asset to the club and community is nothing short of commendable. Just as his Nan did, Charlie now also creates fight posters, programmes and works as a photographer with the likes of Matchroom and Top Tier Boxing. Nominated for the young coach of the year award and narrowly missing out, Charlie has another three years classed as a young coach and I have no doubt that he will achieve this accolade.
Community of Wellingborough, our/ your family is evolving and expanding all the time, we continue to grow in both number and strength, and I am honoured to be part of that family.
Kirk Thompson (Club Secretary)

Another one of our boxers due to be open the home show big hitter Barrington “the gladiator” Abel. He’s one of our older boxers but age has nothing to do with it, he can still go toe to toe with the best of them and work around the ring like it’s a Colosseum thrives off the buzz!
